Northern Hemisphere Autumn of 2018
We write late-August 2018, and Earth's Northern Hemisphere is just about to once again enter autumn. What do you do and think about the autumn?
I think it's great, with all colours of falling leaves, fresh air and darker evenings with lights shining in the windows. It's so much more than just Halloween and All Saints' Day. Here's a nice autumntime song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9_Fij0mW48 Last edited by Original TMNT Cartoon Fan; 10-24-2018 at 02:29 PM. |

It starts warm and gets colder as it approaches winter... it's like the opposite of spring, basically. And like spring, it is a mix of winter and summer without the extremes of temperature. It also has some rain. And the 1st week of November usually has nice weather.
At this point we barely have seasons anymore, tbh. Autumn to me for most of my life has symbolised the return the start of the new school year. Tbh, it's easier to think of years in terms of school years and football seasons. The actual year begins in September and finished in May, with June to August being transitional months. ...also, doesn't autumn start only around September 23? |

Despite the steamy heatwave my entire coast is having once again... while this high of a degree is a bit much, I still don't want summer to end. Early fall can be pretty nice, and I love Halloween (esp on the occasion we get a warmer one), but I don't like what's on the other side of it. I don't look forward to cold weather, painfully cold water, shorter days, or cold and flu season...

^ Same here. Summer has also overstayed its welcome down South. However, we get to endure the-not-as-hot temperatures as our side of Planet Earth begins to cool down. Let's just say that we'll probably get our first taste of the autumn temperatures in ..November.
You are correct. |

I guess it takes time before trees start turning yellow in Portugal. But if I lived there, I would welcome late August as a time the weather isn't that hot anymore.

Yes it can get quite hot here, especially in the last few years. Maximum temperature reached 43C in my city a few weeks ago. A record was broken that day. |

The start of seasons you are referring to are the Equinoxes and Solsices. They occur on or around the 20-22 of March, June, September, and December, due to those dates being the times when days and nights are equal in length or are at their longest, respectively. (IE, December 20-22 being Winter Solstice, which is the longest night if the year.) It varies from year to year, mainly due to the inclusion of leap years. So the Autumnal Exquinox is on the 22nd of September this year, but will be on a different date next year, and so on.
Incidentally, these times also coincide with certain pagan holidays, some of which are still celebrated. Summer and Winter Solstices are very important holidays to the Druids, for instance. This is no surprise, since most ancient cultures told time for important events by the position of certain stars, the sun, and moon at specific times of the year. This is why we still have a few "floating" holidays, too- they were originally celebrated on certain phases of the moon at a given time of the year!

Autumn! How I used to dread that season. The return of another dreaded school year.
Now it just brings relief from the brutal summers here. Bring it on.
