Cerebus creator Dave Sim in the hospital.

I hope he makes a quick recovery.

I know he used to trip acid, could that have something to do with it? Anyway I hope the surgery goes well.

Definitely not.

He's having surgery to remove a blockage. Tummy stuff.

Nah, most of the stuff people have heard about supposed long-term effects of psychedelics is made up by the Nancy Reagans and Barbara Bushs of the world, not based on scientific fact. (The Mikey part of that is at about 14:45, btw.)

I had a friend die from a blockage in his intestines though, so that can be serious business. Hope it goes well for him.

I had no idea about this... but I guess Dave Sim was cancelled some years back? Something about him "grooming" a 14 year old girl.

That was very... disheartening reading that. I respected this artist a lot until I read that. Hopefully he is past this sort of stuff but you never truly know.

Yeah Idk I had heard shady things about him, all I really remember is that Jeff Smith refused to be around him.

Not a popular opinion but during the tension between Sim and Laird over including TMNT #8 in reprints of the first twelve Mirage issues I definitely side with Laird.

Sim seemed to believe that the source of the tension was based on political disagreements between the two or Laird being crotchety in general but asking for a very basic contract is hardly some unreasonable demand. Expecting a verbal agreement over something like that when in the past Sim flexed his muscle to stop the issue being reprinted in the past.

Yeah Sim has issues with women. Even if this wasn't known through his editorials it seems through a few times in his work.

I'm pretty sure he was cancelled way before that for yet more reasons.

I went from knowing Dave Sim did some weird aardvark character that I only know from Mirage Volume 1 #8, to knowing WAY more than I wanted to know. Yikes.

Indeed, I watched this video awhile ago. Didn't know that much about Sim back then.

But...all that aside, I hope he pulls through OK.

I mean, I at least know more about Dave Sim than I do the Flaming Carrot or whatever. But that's not saying much.

Mirage sure did love its obscure crossovers...

Not sure if I'd say Cerebus was obscure. If you liked independent comics at the time you'd know Sim's Cerebus which was the best selling indie title until TMNT came along hence why the crossover exists; the two best selling indie titles teaming up. Of course Cerebus would end up still selling well by indie standards even after the shine had worn of TMNT. Other than the team up with TMNT I know it from appearing on so many Must Read comic book lists that I had to give it a try.

Really? Huh. I should quit living in this hole in the ground, I guess.

Eastman and Laird actually asked Sim if he wanted a Cerebus action figure in the TMNT line, he of course said no. Obviously the storyline didn't exist at the time but it's strange to think kids playing with a cartoon aardvark that beats and rapes women.

It's also the longest running (afaik) creator owned single artist title with 300 issues. Usagi is going to overtake it sooner or later (assuming Stan doesn't retire any time shortly) but that's one hell of a run.

Savage Dragon will overtake it as well in a few years (issue #257 is the current issue).
