I guarantee you that when Kev and Pete created the April character, they may not have had every last detail of her backstory jotted down - they probably figured it would never come up or be important, most likely. But I promise you - I PROMISE you - they were never, ever considering anything like THAT.

I get that there was some kind of "meta" nonsense inherent to it - "ALL the characters are just 'drawings brought to life by the power of imagination' if you THINK about it, hardy-har-harrrrrrr!" - but it was stupid. It barely works when guys like Alan Moore and Grant Morrison lean into that sh*t, and to be perfectly blunt, Peter Laird isn't anywhere near those guys as far as writing talent. They're not even playing the same sport.

To my earlier semi-obscure reference... many people openly mock "Superboy Prime punched time itself once upon a time and that's why comic book continuity in general is always so flexible" as one of the dumbest plot devices ever put to paper. I personally think that's an overstatement, but I admit, it's kinda dumb. But it's NOWHERE near as dumb as April O'Neil's "Secret Origin". THAT is probably the single dumbest thing I've ever read in a comic book, and if there's anything worse I honestly can't recall.

I don't wanna be mean, but after that sh*t I was openly rooting for Vol. 4 to get cancelled so I wouldn't "have to" buy it anymore. I already wasn't having fun but that sh*t just killed any lingering specks of enthusiasm. It was clear the guy was off his rocker by that point.

I refuse to accept it, and you can't make me.

I'd much rather have it be implied in some moment of weakness and alcohol April let the guys run a train on her in canon than accept the cockroach stuff. I know April went off to sulk and sort through things but I think I would have been more concerned than the things I did while being transformed into a roach than finding out I was a living drawing.
