Its rather sad, and pathetic, that some overly sensitive parents and/or 10 year old kids thought their minds were being polluted. Imagine if a gay character was introduced in the Archie series? They'd go ballistic.

I honestly don't think there are any gay characters in TMNT at all, correct me if I'm wrong? I can't think of any...

Dr. X was gender confused. And for some reason I could see Agent Bishop being gay.

I actually kind of wondered if Oyuki, that Japanese girl that wound up becoming April's assistant was a lesbian. Murphy was getting quite suggestive in the later issues of Archie.

Why is it when I read this I thought main line Archie and not TMNT Adventures...and immediately thought of him?

Maybe it's like the reason they renamed Bixby's character to David, perhaps you think the name Kevin is inherantly queer. That's pretty narrow-minded of you though.

I'm not surprised the TMNT Adventures comic received letters like that. A lot of the same people were probably making others scared of Dungeons and Dragons and later Harry Potter as well. You name something kids have liked, and there will be one of those "think of the children!" types that complains about it.

I feel kind of bad for those people. You don't have to completely believe in a philosophy or practice in order to learn something from it. They are missing out, and are making their kids miss out as well.

You caught me. I think the name Kevin is gay.

Wait...

My mom once asked me in a super-serious manner if any of the comics I was reading were "satanic" and I laughed at her. I loved that TMNTA included references to the cultures and beliefs of other people and places because growing up in a remote small-town had me surrounded by people who feared or ignored any such things.

What basis/evidence for this is there?

Just reviewed TMNT Adventures #35 and you know what they did in that issue?

They drew Muhammed.

You know? That thing you are never, ever supposed to do?

I look forward to checking the letters pages in future issues to see if any Muslims were offended. Granted, the "never, ever draw Muhammed" thing seems to be a more recent hot button of the Islamic faith than it was in 1992.

This is just my own perspective, but Vernon seemed to have a tendency of setting off my gaydar on more than one occasion.

I'm guessing we won't ever see that issue reprinted in its original, unedited glory.

It doesn’t matter what religion they practice. The TMNT are good people. So they meditate. Meditation, to me, is not really praying but just relaxing the mind, body, and soul. There is nothing Anti-Christ about that. And what is wrong with trying to show the violence and evil of the villains to kids? Parents should teach their children the difference between "good guy vs. bad guy." That way, they know better and not choose the dark side themselves. I have watched this kind of violence when I was a kid, and I know what evil is. We should show evil to some children so they know how bad it is so they don't become people like the Shredder or something.

I found some more letters and correlated them along with the info Jester found in those books into an article on the subject at TMNT Entity:

Christianity Vs. The Ninja Turtles

(incidentally, I migrated all the letter column quotes from the #33 review to the above article)

Its interesting how every big kids fad gets targeted.

Remember when Pokemon came under fire by religious freaks back in 1998/1999/2000? Especially about how psychic pokemon were evil, etc.

I was a huge Pokemon fan, and even I have to admit that you can see where some of the critism comes from. Even though Ash and the gang came in to conflict with the evil Team Rocket, they didn't set out to fight crime or anything like that, their main thing was making their pets fight one another.

Not that the show ever made me urge my chocolate lab into biting the neighbors huskie, but if you overanalyze that ficitonal universe... what gives them the right to battle those creatures?
