How many hardcore fans could there really be? Most people who've read the book had it forced on them in Jr. High.

Yeah, and the movie is kind of a bummer. It's good and all, one of those movies that stick with one, but it's not exactly a pleasant watch. I certainly wouldn't wanna sit through it again, different or no.

^ This. Book is decent, but I'm definitely in no hurry to read it again.

As for the movie, odd direction to go in but whatever. Doubt I'll see it.

I'm probably one of the few who enjoyed reading it in middle school. But then I was in a gifted program for English lit and we did some really cool projects relating to it. This could be interesting if done right. I agree that it would need a bit of retooling for current audiences and updates to the story and characters to work but I think as students of an all girls school it could very well prove enlightening regarding how girls behave when left alone.

It will have to be a period piece if it's going to work. In 2017, I don't buy a plane load of kids crashing on an inhabitable but uninhabited island and being lost for enough time to go feral.

You've actually got a point there.

A group of teenage girls would be less likely to slaughter one another while stranded on an island. Partly because they'd be helping each other to deal with their little monthly issues. Sure, in my high school experience, there were Girl!Fights harder to break up than Boy!Fights, but it was an exception to the rule.

If they have to turn against each other, they'd use psychological warfare, as is standard practice when women get aggressive towards other women (and I should know from my middle/high school years). When discussing the children replicating what adults do, girls don't usually see adult women be violent toward one another the way boys would see men. Well, that might depend on where they're from, but for the most part, girls would not go for violence. They'd go for aggressive suggestion.

And yeah, no way any Lord of the Flies situation would happen in the 2010's. Maybe not even the 90's.

Believe it or not, that had occurred to me - but sometimes you just have to jump and not look back.

Maybe from another country. Which they won't do.

Maybe it'll be like the Heathers reboot, and they'll make all of the evil girls women of color, in an effort to be inclusive, but then missing the point even more.

Just make it set 25 years ago or something.
