Well, pseudo-profanity does seem like something it would avoid I guess.

But on the other hand, Shredder of the 1987-1996 said "What the devil".

You know, now that I think about it, they could have gotten away with him using Japanese profanity. Not that I think the writers knew any but still.

What are Japanese profanity bsed on (more than dogs)? It can't have with the Christian devil to do, since it's a Buddhist tradition.

I don't really know much of anything about Japanese profanity, so this is just what google gives me.

Not for me. The "shell" profanity never got old. I still use it frequently.

I still crack up when I watch "Leonardo Lightens Up." One of my favorite episodes.

Because it wasn't as consistent and overplayed as that one though. They had pizza puns, but not the exact same one every episode. What the shell was basically a catchphrase.

I liked "what the shell" and "oh shell" when I was 13. I thought it was funny and a way to make the show look more mature without stopping to be kid-friendly.

Nowadays it does feel like they repeated that gag a lot but it's hardly the most grating thing about the 2k3 series, so I let it slide.

I found the 2003 humour very forced and therefore unfunny. The show was good about being serious but couldn't really handle humour. It's in good company though as most TV suffers from that today.

The first series had so muchh mroe non-children humour when you think of it. I don't even think "What the Shell" should be considered humour at all.

The best was the scene on D'Hoonnib, where one turtle leads four rats.
