Emotional line by Mikey in TMNT2 Out Of The Shadows (spoiler alert)

When the turtles were first exposed at the police headquarters, a terrified police asked "what are they?!" and someone yelled "they're MONSTERS!!"

Mikey, with his hands in the air (or on his head? I forgot) and heartbroken, quietly mumbled "we're not monsters..."

And later on when they escaped back to the lair, Mikey told Splinter that the humans who saw them are not only shocked, but more like... HATED them at first sight

Are these lines by Mikey indirectly referencing how the TMNT1 production team felt when there was a huge backlash from the fans and public in general, regarding the turtles looking ugly and all, two years ago? This thought hit me immediately while I was watching TMNT2 till that part. Anyone else felt the same?

I doubt it was a jab at the criticism on the terrible creature designs PD decided to go with, and more about the Turtles being humanoid Turtles.

Dammit this is the second time a tmnt movie almost brought me to tears. First one was Raph's outburst confession whilst they were plummeting to their death from a skyscraper (but theeey had to make a joke out of that one).

Oh wait, the classic 1990 had one teary scene. I like that scene where Raph and Splinter sat in the shadow and talking about his anger. "I am here, my son...", that was sad too.

The campfire scene was sad.

Now that you mention it, I really think it was a thing to that. I also think it was talking about how Mikey just wanted to fit in like a nerd with the jocks

eh, **** the jocks, not like their any different to me than Mikey.

I felt it was more that Mikey experienced something similar to racism (species-ism?) for the first time when I saw it. It very well could have been a jab at how people perceived the designs for the first time from the first film though too although if so I would think they would have made it more of a joke then a sad moment.

Actual character development for the turtles in the film? who would have thought that would have been a good idea?

Many emotional scenes in that movie:

- Splinter's moment with Raphael, as you noted
- Donatello's "not having him" moment with Michelangelo (subtle but effective, sold by Michelangelo crying and Donatello consoling him in the campfire scene)
- The Turtles discovering Splinter's been captured
- April and Donatello's "miss your father" exchange (small moment, but effective)
- Raphael's recovery and reconciliation with Leonardo (undercut by a joke, but still)
- The campfire scene
- Leonardo angrily/recklessly attacking Shredder when he believes Splinter is dead
- Splinter confronting Shredder with the Oroku Saki revelation, and his reuniting with the Turtles

Pffft! Creep Mikey's the reason I'm waiting for this movie to hit my local library. I did the same thing for the first movie but so many parts in that one (especially that last damn scene) encouraged me even more not to give Paramount a penny once again.

That moment's honestly the best, most subtle thing about the original films. I'm glad someone pointed that out!

God it's such a good movie.

Subtle, effective.

Just fantastic.
