New Ghostbusters movie in OG movie universe Jason Reitman directing 2020

Do you believe in UFOs, astral projections, mental telepathy, ESP, clairvoyance, spirit photography, telekinetic movement, full-trance mediums, the Loch Ness Monster and the theory of Atlantis?

If so, good news — there’s a new Ghostbusters movie in the works.

Entertainment Weekly has learned exclusively that Jason Reitman will direct and co-write an upcoming film set in the world that was saved decades previously by the proton pack-wearing working stiffs in the original 1984 movie, which was directed by his father, Ivan Reitman.

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” Reitman says. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

Sony Pictures has dated the film for Summer 2020, with plans to start shooting in a few months.

It’s still too soon to reveal the plot of the screenplay, who the new characters will be, or whether the original actors like Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, or Bill Murray will return. Harold Ramis died in 2014.

“This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet,” says Reitman, who co-wrote the screenplay with Monster House and Poltergeist remake filmmaker Gil Kenan.

The all-female Ghostbusters movie that director Paul Feig made in 2016 with Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig, and Melissa McCarthy started its story from scratch, unconnected to the earlier films, so it won’t have ties to this new one. “I have so much respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them. However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film,” Reitman says.

Reitman, an Oscar-nominee for Up in the Air and Juno, released two films last year — the Charlize Theron motherhood story Tully and the Hugh Jackman political drama The Front Runner.

He grew up idolizing his dad’s big-budget comedies like Stripes, Twins, and Dave, and says he was just as obsessed with Ghostbustersas any other ‘80s kid.

“I love everything about it. The iconography. The music. The tone,” Reitman says. “I remember being on set and seeing them try out the card catalog gag for the first time when the library ghost makes them come flying out. I remember the day they killed Stay Puft and I brought home a hardened piece of foam that just sat on a shelf for years. I was scared there was a terror dog underneath my bed before people knew what a terror dog was.”

Jason, his mother, and sister played panicked residents fleeing the “Spook Central” haunted skyscraper in the first film, but they were ultimately cut. (Here’s a shot of 6-year-old Jason posing with his father on the fractured Manhattan street they constructed.)

A few years later, the boy did get a laugh line in the 1989 sequel, playing a birthday boy who was unimpressed by the Ghostbusters: “My dad says you guys are full of crap.”

When he began making his own movies, starting with 2005’s Thank You for Smoking, Reitman was often asked in interviews if he’d ever want to make his own Ghostbusters movie.

“I think I said, ‘There’d be no busting,’” he recalls with a laugh.

The truth is, he often wondered about making one, too: “I’ve thought about this franchise and it has occupied a piece of my heart for basically as long as I can remember.”

His father will produce the movie. “It will be a passing of the torch both inside and out,” says Ivan, adding that he’s touched his son wanted to join this part of the family business. “It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career on his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil and said, ‘I know I’ve been saying for 10 years I’m the last person who should make a Ghostbusters movie, but…I have this idea.’ Literally, I was crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.”

Sony is also developing an animated Ghostbusters film, but that will come out after this new live-action project, and a different team will be involved in creating it.

“The Ghostbusters universe is big enough to hold a lot of different stories,” Jason says.

I don't know how I feel about this. Ghostbusters was as important to me as the TMNT. I *love* that franchise.

For that reason, I positively refuse to watch the Feigman movie. It felt like such a poor attempt to cash in on the nostalgia/SJW fad that it just missed the whole point of the original films.

Also, I think something was lost with Harold Ramis that they'll never get back. That dry humor played so well off of Murray's nonchalance, Aykroyd's starry eyed positivity, and Hudson's reserved amazement.

They caught lightening in a bottle. It's going to be surprising if they do it again.

Well I’d like the 2016 movie to be connected somehow (even if it has to be an alternate universe ) but I’m happy to get another movie.

I know Dan recently said a part 3 was happening and nobody really believed him. This sounds like a confirmation but I still have a hard time believing it.

The guy who had written this...bad article passing as an "editorial" most likely had never been laid in his life, since he is trying so hard to virtue signal, my monitor had nearly started to vomit pink and blue hairs.

Just this: "white male director", "specific audience", "GB'16 was bad because it was starring 4 women"...Holy crap. It's like this loser had scrubbed all possible SJW cliches and threw them into blender which had shat this..."opinion piece".

Modern "journalism" my ass.

This is why I said before that I hate when Ghostbusters is brought up now. It’s just a freaking movie.

I said they’ll probably do a universe crossover after doing part 3. No need for calling it a missed opportunity (though I appreciate the sentiment) and definitely no reason for Leslie Jones to complain.

Those who want to hate the reboot for whatever reasons they think they should, fine but stop plastering it all over anytime so much as the word Ghost is typed.

As for the kids/teens plot rumors that’s perfectly fine if it’s true.

Sorry but everyone used up all thier complaints on the reboot. Especially since this is literally a proper sequel with the original characters and creative force.

Nonsense. This is an entirely new set of complaints.

Kids can't act. I don't want to see that sh*t. Don't tell me it's all even and fine because we might get five minutes of Ray Stanz in between two hours of whatever the "Young Sheldon" kid's name is. Four 12-year olds running around doing "Home Alone Face" while Ray and Winston whine about being old and fat sounds like water torture.

Let me guess the plot: Kids are terrified by ghosts, nobody except the original surviving Ghostbusters believes them (despite TWO MOVIES supposedly in the same universe that conclusively prove the existence of ghosts), and ghosts are like Santa Claus, they only have power if kids Believe. Therefore, in the end, the New Ghostbusters win over the evil spirits NOT with proton packs, but by sincerely embracing the mantra "I Ain't Afraid Of No Ghost."

That's not a Ghostbusters movie, that's "Goosebumps, directed by Steven Spielberg."

I don't want a stupid "gimmick", I just want a f*cking decent movie, either the last one ever or, if they HAVE to, a pass-the-torch deal. Why kids? Why not actual people in their 20s so at least the premise makes sense and is believable? Because they feel like they can't sell the movie without a dumb gimmick. And they're wrong.

Y'know, it's whatever. I was looking back over the development hell of the last 15 years, and when you consistently see names like Seth Rogen, Chris Rock, Jonah Hill pop up, and then you see what they actually got around to making, you realize that nothing they did was ever gonna be any good. Only Ramis and Reitman knew what they were making and why it worked; one guy is dead, the other is retired from the series, and that kind of understanding is not hereditary. I'm sure his kid's a nice guy, but that doesn't mean he Gets It.

We'll see. I don't want a gimmick movie and I damn sure don't want a kids movie. Because when THAT fails is when they pack it in and start making the talking dogs movie because they have no other ideas.

"Ghost Buddies", coming straight to DVD, Halloween 2022. You heard it here first.

That is the exact attitude I’ve been seeing towards this franchise since like 2006. Absolutely nothing is ever good enough.

It’s not even an actual complaint at that point. It’s literally just deciding to not like something no matter what simply because it’s not how you would do it or imagined. So there’s no point in trying to please this area of the fan base...that’s done.

Even if Ghostbusters 3 came out in the 90s it most definitely would have used whatever trends were popular at that time. Thats for sure.

Passing the torch to another team or family members is and has always been the best way to go. Not sure how teens would inherit the business but whatever they planned wouldn’t really take place until a part 4.

But Ivan is still there as producer. I'm sure he'll give his son plenty of direction.

Ok, anybody seen this statement from Leslie Jones?
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/...191458836.html

I lol'd at the irony here. Censored explicit language warning:
Spoiler:
“So insulting. Like f—k us. We dint count,” the comedian wrote before making a political statement. “It’s like something trump would do. (Trump voice) ‘Gonna redo ghostbusteeeeers, better with men, will be huge. Those women ain’t ghostbusteeeeers’ ugh so annoying. Such a d—k move. And I don’t give f—k I’m saying something!!”

Then again, maybe she's just joking. Of course, right?

Check a couple pages back, sir. We've all already called her an idiot.

She's completely unbearable and really needs to watch her mouth. Unless she's got pictures of some high-level executive naked with a horse, her "job security" in Hollywood is practically nil.

Y'know, because she's fat, ugly, not funny, doesn't have an indoor voice, and to borrow an old saying from Bill Watts, "Couldn't draw flies if you rolled her in sh*t first." As in, she's not a bankable talent, nobody pays money to see her in anything, and she's absolutely worthless to the bottom line of any film she appears in.

Adds nothing, contributes nothing, talks like she's got a bucket of Oscars and Emmys. It's "great" watching people like that fail upwards in life. Seriously.
