She's alternately been based on pretty much anyone Kevin was f*cking at any given moment in time while he was working on the book, including one who was part-Asian, I believe. Other people know the whole story in greater detail than I do.

If only he'd followed conventional wisdom about chicks you're dating - Don't get their name tattooed on you, and don't stick them into your creative works - then there would be a lot less confusion about the whole thing.

So yeah, April was partly-based, at one time, on a black chick he was banging in that moment, but that was later on, not when she was created.

She primarily had black and then brown hair for most of the 80's and 90's.

Then in the 2000's decade she was a red-head in every new incarnation:

2003: 4kids series
2007: 4th CG movie
2011: IDW comics
2012: Nick TMNT cartoon
2014: Megan Fox had some red tint to her hair

That's over the span of almost 20 years, the entire 2000's and 2010 decade besides Rise in 2018.

Whereas for the 20 years of 80's/90's she wasn't like that. In a way, red head April is now more mainstream than her old brown/black haired look.

I've found that there are very few attractive redheads.

I question your tastes.

Are you color blind? April is known to be a redhead amongst the masses and casuals. Nitpick Pantone colors all day long, she was a primarily portrayed as a ginger in mainstream TMNT media. Fred Wolf, Playmates, Konami arcade side art, Nintendo sprites, Archie issues, Judith Hoag, theme park actresses, the list goes on. That is, unless you're referring solely to Mirage.

And the world didn't end! It looks like it was issue 4, still very early on.

Eastman was pushing for Julie Strain (wife? girlfriend? FWB?) to be cast as April/Alt-dimension April in the TMNT 4 movie. I think she was even in Heavy Metal 2000. He obviously has an MO. Has April been blonde any recently?

Rosario Dawson is still my dream casting for a new movie or show. Period piece with a crazy crimped perm. ...or Christina Hendricks. Excuse me for a moment...

I would be open to that.

She has brown hair in all of those, especially the original cartoon and Archie:

Also depending on the animation style her hair was shaded darker as it went on too

This is brown hair. In Movie 2 and 3 especially April's hair was brown, and in the first movie her hair was definitely more of a brown hue than red head, although I'll give you Judith Hoag.

Yeah, I think you're color blind. The posted examples are clearly meant to represent April as a ginger. The Archie example uses bright red ink for crying out loud!

Turco has brown hair, for sure. All of the above-- ginger. Clearly.

I am not colorblind, April’s hair was also clearly colored brown as the series went on. In Turtles Forever her hair is brown too for that matter.

Go look at any clip or screen of 80’s April online.

April was always considered a brunette by fans in the OT, this is for 15-20 years.

I'd suggest a poll if you were interested on consensus ... but I'm not sure it would warrant a whole thread...

That would be a unique poll - "Have you traditionally thought of April as a Red Head or with brown hair based on FW TMNT?"

-Red
-Brown
-I like pizza

And actually, I saw her as red back then. It's just not an obvious, fake bottle #whatever red like in 2003.

Sorry, gonna pull the woman card here for a sec. Women usually have better color vision (look it up) and are typically better at differentiating between the subtle differences between similar colors. Such as a more subtle red vs brown. (Same reason my parents could never agree on one of the colors of our state license plate.)

Though I'm sure seeing the red in those images is not exclusive to female viewers/readers. That second one where she looks like Ariel the Little Mermaid could be used as a color vision test, because unless someone has particularly low color vision, come on... that's clearly a red, Ariel was red, and the likeness was probably on purpose.

If you want to get more specific, then it's auburn, a variation of red.

Now I'm confused about one of the major colors on my pizza.

You're blind. She's red head in those pics.

Wrong again. Here is a link to Turtlepedia where it explicitly says the 80's toon April had auburn hair.
