Thundercats Roar-AKA Thunder Titans Go!

Quote:
The ThunderCats are coming back!

EW can exclusively reveal that Warner Bros. Animation is bringing back the iconic cat-like aliens for new animated series called ThunderCats Roar, which will debut on Cartoon Network in 2019.

Check out an exclusive sneak peak at the show above.

The original ThunderCats show aired from 1985 and 1989, and followed the adventures of Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra, Snarf, and WilyKit and WilyKat, the refugees of the planet Thundera who end up on Third Earth. While ThunderCats Roar plans on staying true to the original’s premise and will feature tons of action, it will also lean into the inherent comedy of the world, too.

“I think the world that they built lends itself really well to comedy because of how silly and crazy and outlandish those ideas are and some of those settings are,” says producer Victor Courtright in the exclusive behind-the-scenes video above. “But at the same time, it wouldn’t be ThunderCats if it didn’t have super cool action elements because that’s what people came back to. It’s very much something that we want to lean on. So with the new show, we’re not walking away from the action in any bit. Every step we take towards comedy, we take two more towards really cool action scenes and explosions and lasers and actions effects.”

Here’s the official logline for the series: “Staying true to the premise of the original series, Lion-O and the ThunderCats — Tygra, Panthro, Cheetara, Wilykat, and Wilykit — barely escape the sudden destruction of their home world, Thundera, only to crash land on the mysterious and exotic planet of Third Earth. Lion-O, the newly appointed Lord of the ThunderCats, attempts to lead the team as they make this planet their new home. A bizarre host of creatures and villains stand in their way, including the evil Mumm-Ra, Third Earth’s wicked ruler who will let nothing, including the ThunderCats, stop his tyrannical reign over the planet.”

ThunderCats Roar stars Max Mittelman (Justice League Action) as Lion-O and Wilykat, Erica Lindbeck (DC Super Hero Girls) as Cheetara and Wilykit, Patrick Seitz (Justice League Action) as Tygra and Mumm-Ra, and Chris Jai Alex (Star Wars: Battlefront II) as Panthro.

If there was ever a time for those Thundercats outtakes...

Is that pic the actual design?

I don't think I like the current toon trend that much but it is what is popular with children.

LOL! Oh my god, when will this end? Every single cartoon....exactly the goddamn same.

At least Rise of the TMNT doesn't look like this, although the TMNT summer shorts do.

Now Thundercats fans are knowing what some of the TMNT fans feel about there new series.

I'm not quite onboard with these designs. and the fact its not taking itself seriously. This is basically another Teen Titans Go. But based on a beloved 80s cartoon.

Why does it look like every other modern American cartoon?
Not only I detest this design by itself, but the fact that everyone trying to copycat it, is just pathetic.

Ugh, I so miss style of the 80-s.

is it someones mission to take everything we love about the 80s and totally frig it up?

If I had the storyboards, and the original voices on board, and maybe even an original writer.. I'd attempt to make a NEW Turtles episode, taking place after Divide and Conquer just to s how you CAN respect what has come before and STILL make it cool.

but that would be alot of perfect storms to come together to make that happen. sigh.

You miss when characters moved stiff as cardboard and there were almost basically no violence, also when it was so PC that they change Baxter into a white guy just because they would't offend anyone.

I would welcome a TTGo! Thundercats show, but man those designs are so awful, they look exactly like the TMNT Team Up shorts (same artist?). I like TTGo! humor but the Team Up humor definitely wasn't as good as TTG.

Why did the Thundercats 2011 revival bomb? The character designs looked awesome and the trailers were cool. Was it because Cartoon Network started their hate towards action shows at that time?

The 2010's will likely be remembered as a dark time for cartoons aside from a few standouts. This decade has definitely been worse than 2000-2009 or the 90's for cartoons.

The linework looks a little too Uncle Gran'pa for my tastes, but it could be good story-wise.

I can't be done with them, they're giving me a Harvey Birdman movie!
And Steven Universe is still pretty awesome.

Everything in the 90s had X-TREME angles, now everything is built on a curve.

The writing on the show could be good, I guess there's potential even if I'd say He-Man just has more stuff to work with for parody and comedic situations. but man that art style is so off putting, TTG has much better chibi art.

This 2011 reboot should've been the greatest thing ever, I mean I re-watched Thundercats two years before the 2011reboot and while the 80s show reeked of the 80s it did plenty of world building that anyone could shape up a super interesting story based on all the lore. How did it fail?

I like the type of designs SDP posted but it seems this other type is the thing at the moment, is it a younger kid audience thing? Thinking of things like Gumball I'd say maybe not, the content though not over old didn't really yell 4-year-old at me either.
