Brie Larson the frontrunner for Captain Marvel

Brie Larson the Frontrunner to Play Captain Marvel (EXCLUSIVE)

After her Oscar-winning turn in “Room,” Brie Larson may be ready to step into the shoes of Marvel’s most popular female superhero.

Sources tell Variety Marvel is in early talks with Larson to play Captain Marvel in the studio’s standalone project. It is unknown where things stand in negotiations but sources have told Variety she is the choice and Larson is leaning towards playing the part.

Marvel had no comment on the story.

No director is currently on board. Marvel, however, had always planned to have an actress lined up early, with the idea of possibly introducing her in one of its upcoming films before its “Captain Marvel” movie bows.

“Inside Out” scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman are currently writing the script, which follows Carol Danvers, an air force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the super powers of strength, energy project and flight.

Kevin Feige is producing the pic.

Larson has been choosing both big-budget spectacles, like the upcoming “Kong: Skull Island,” and prestige films, such as “Room” and “The Glass Castle,” which she is currently filming.

She can be seen next in Ben Wheatley’s “Free Fire” opposite Armie Hammer. She is repped by WME and Authentic Talent and Literary Management.

I haven't seen anything with her in it, but from her picture she looks like a hot babe, so I suppose she'll do ok in the role. Ms. Marvel was designed to look good after all.

Her name doesn't ring any bells... still, except for Mark Ruffalo, I've loved all of Marvel's casting decisions. So I'm willing to be won over.

I adore Captain Marvel, and this is probably the most anticipated casting of my life.

That's the new Ms Marvel, who took up the name when the old Ms Marvel took up the Captain Marvel name.

Larson is an ok actress, not liking this casting though. This past month, the hot rumor has been that the director and lead had the same first name... was really hoping for Kathryn Bigelow and Kathryn Winnick.

Bigelow has worked with a ton of MCU actors and has made two classic war movies. I don't know about big action and stylized fight scenes, but she's insanely good at building tension.

Still hoping.

Whoa! I'd actually never considered this casting. But I've enjoyed her in pretty much everything I've seen her in, and Marvel has a pretty damn solid track record with casting, so I'm hoping this works out.

She was in "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" as Envy Adams, was a regular on "The United States of Tara", made some appearances on "Community", was more recently in the movies "Short Term 12" and "Trainwreck", and won an Oscar for her role in "Room". She's a capable actor who's definitely on the rise, so this is a solid get for Marvel if she signs on.

Ah, Community... that's gotta be her major in. Seeing as she's likely to be in Infinity War part 1 even before her own movie, the Russo's are likely to have major say in this casting.

Loved her in "United States of Tara" and "Scott Pilgrim," but I haven't seen her Oscar nod flick. She's an interesting casting consideration. Certainly has the chops and the range, but I'll be honest I was kind of hoping for Gwendolyn Chrstie or Katee Sackoff.

Though I'll be the first to admit that neither of them really has box office recognition. At least not that I know of.

I'm guessing this means the character is no longer a contemporary of Stark, and is losing some of her military rank, as Larson is only in her mid 20s.
