James Gunn Re-hired for GOTG Vol 3

James Gunn is exiting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The move comes after conservative personalities resurfaced old tweets in which the filmmaker joked about controversial topics such as pedophelia and rape. Gunn, who has been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, has since deleted his Twitter account.

"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," said Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn in a statement.

Before deleting his account, Gunn tweeted, "Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor."

Gunn has been writing the script for Guardians 3, and the movie was expected to begin shooting in Atlanta in the fall for an expected 2020 release date. The Guardians movies have been a massive success for Disney and Marvel. The first movie made more than $773 million worldwide while the second made $863 million. The films stood out from other Marvel movies as they were infused with Gunn's off-kilter filmmaking sensibilities that owed more to indie genre movies than slicker cookie cutter studio fare.

More to come.

Huh.
Well that's a damn shame on many fronts.
I've been making my way through his interview on the podcast "Inside You" with Michael Rosenbaum, and he's certainly honest about his early life and early opinions and how he's grown.

I wonder how come Disney executives are able to randomly fire directors out from under Feige, particularly proven ones. I thought Feige and Marvel Studios had basic autonomy.

This here is good proof of what happens when someone assumes they're in a safe space, and they're not.

Mr Weasley warned us:
"“Ginny!" said Mr. Weasley, flabbergasted. "Haven't I taught you anything? What have I always told you? Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can't see where it keeps its brain?”

This is going to affect Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. He's been writing it. and the film is supposed to be released in 2020. Now Marvel has to find a new director. And possibly a new writer if they decide not to go with his script.

Didn't these decade old tweets come out prior to the first GOTG? I could've sworn there was already a big discussion about this.

Crazy that Disney makes this move now. He's been extremely outspoken about Trump recently. I hope that didn't play a factor in his removal.

This is going to affect the MCU as a whole. He was in charge of spearheading the cosmic side of the MCU in Phase 4.

I looked at the tweets. A... different kind of a sense of humor, to be sure, but he's very obviously joking in each and every one of them.

F*** Disney.

**** Disney is right.

I'm positive this was brought up before the first movie. Disney knew then. Just like Disney knew what they were getting when they brought Roseanne back. This BS self righteousness after the fact is disgusting.

Ah, but back then Gunn wasn't pointing his ire at a sitting administration.
The world was a different place then.

It's extremely shameful that Gunn behaved that way. As a result of his actions the man who made the Guardians of Galaxy staples in the Marvel Cinematic Universe won't be coming back to do the third one.

I will say that if Disney gets Joss Whedon to replace him, then would be extremely disappointing and would make no sense whatsoever. That man tweeted that he wished Paul Ryan would be raped to death by a rhinoceros. He also poked fun at cancer survivors who visited Ryan. Plus, his fan website was shut down after all of the awful things that were revealed about him in an essay that his ex-wife had written.

Joss Whedon is totally gone, mentally. He's like a big putrid ball of hate and bile now.

So it was Trump supporters that led the charge in this - they did the digging and rallied together on Twitter to bring it to the attention of Disney.

Terrible precedent set here.

Not just Trump supporters, but the freaking pizzagate folks apparently. It's laughable that Disney gave those people any time.
