Episode 45: Super Bebop and Mighty Rocksteady

Mistakes:
1. The title of the episode is "Super Bebop & Mighty Rocksteady", but Krang names the supermutants Super Rocksteady and Mighty Bebop. This is also how Family Home Entertainment named this episode upon its VHS release.
2. When Leonardo and Donatello are outside Channel 6 patrolling, Leonardo's hand holding the Turtlecom shows four fingers, but the Turtles have only three fingers.
3. After installing the Mesmerizer on the antenna, Shredder's skin turns to light tan, and his vest turns a dark grey.
4. Burne seems much shorter than usual in some scenes, in particular when Shredder contacts Krang while looking down from the roof in the news studio.
5. Krang's eyes are white instead of purple when he responds to Shredder's complaints about the Mesmerizer.
6. The disk Rocksteady holds when Donatello spins him into the Channel 6 lobby is a rectangle instead of a square.
7. When inspecting the disk in the Turtle Van, Donatello's animation appears much more "cartoony" than usual. His eyes are wider and his smile on his face seems rather goofy.
8. When Donatello says "Here it goes" in the Channel 6 lobby, his bandana is tied more like rabbit ears than usual.
9. Burne's body gets bigger and bigger as he falls off of the hanging light.
10. Donatello's teeth were red instead of white when he uses the Super Mutant Remote Device on the supermutants.
11. Michelangelo's belt color matches his plastron and the bottom of the pastron is green while Donatello inspects the Mesmerizer's schematics.
12. When the reprogrammed supermutants are seen dancing and Mighty Bebop grabs Shredder to dance, the animation is recycled after Shredder turns around.
13. Even though the Turtles have green eyelids by this point in the series, right before the Turtles leave the lair, Leonardo has blue eyelids.
14. The mesmerizer's glow is colored blue when Shredder turns it on, but then when the Turtles see the glow from the street, it is magenta, despite still having the same function.
15. When the Turtles first enter the Channel 6 building in front of the supermutants, Donatello says "what are these guys" in Raphael's voice.
16. Donatello's "D" on his belt is not visible when he says "they're big trouble that's what they are" right before the second commercial break.
17. When the supermutants pull the Turtles off of the side of the Channel 6 building, Michelangelo lands on top of Raphael, even though on the shot before it is clear that Michelangelo was further down the building as they cut to the next scene.

Catchphrase/Insult Countdown:
1. Bebop says "Mama!" (in a natural voice) right before he and Rocksteady fall from the antenna tower.
2. Shredder calls Rocksteady and Bebop "moronic mutants" after seeing that they fell from the antenna tower.
3. Bebop says "Mama!" (in a stock voice) right before he and Rocksteady get thrown by the supermutants.
4. Krang calls Rocksteady and Bebop complete idiots and imbeciles.
5. Shredder calls Rocksteady and Bebop "stupid mutants" to distinct them from the supermutants.

Pizza References:
1. Michelangelo sees Vinnie's Pizzeria while patrolling the Channel 6 building, and the Turtles decide to have a pizza there since it is close enough to the building to patrol.
2. Michelangelo wishes he ordered a pickled hair and caramel fudge topping pizza at Vinnie's, but it turned out to be just cheese and anchovies.
3. The pizza billboard (see mistake 14) next to Channel 6 is visible. This confirms that this is Vinnie's Pizzeria next to Channel 6.
4. Shredder, Rocksteady, and Bebop crash into a pizza delivery cart. Michelangelo admits that all of that pizza is totally trashed.
5. The Turtles return to Vinnie's Pizza at the end of the episode. They eat a marshmallow and asparagus pizza as a gift from April and Irma.

Pop Culture References:
1. The various spells cast by the Mesmerizer turn those who are affected into a spell identified by the Mesmerizer's schematics. First, it was slaves/zombies. Next, after the screw fell out of the Mesmerizer, it was young children. This included games such as Tag, Hopscotch, Jump Rope, One Potato Two Potato, and watching cartoons. When the Mesmerizer's radiation color changed from blue to yellow, it was dogs, expressed by barking sounds. When it changed from yellow to pink, it was gorillas, shown by Burne's swinging on the light in the news studio and Shredder climbing the Channel 6 antenna.
2. When holding onto the disk while caught in the Channel 6 revolving door, Rocksteady states that he won't spill the beans by giving the disk to the Turtles. This refers to the Depression-era expression by the poor "hobo" culture.
3. While the Turtles are watching the hypnotized Channel 6 crew members, Michelangelo jokes that they're watching "Night of the Living Newscaster", a parody on the 1968 George A. Romero film "Night of the Living Dead".
4. At the start of the episode, the generic news reporter reports on a shortage of rutabagas. A rutabaga is a vegetable that originates as a cross between cabbage and turnips.

Fourth Wall Breaking Humor:
1. Michelangelo thinks that the Channel 6's crew's "you command, I obey" chant kind of has a catchy beat.
2. Michelangelo says "is this ever suspenseful or what?" right before the Turtles fall from the side of the Channel 6 building.
3. Raphael says "that's right, give him ideas" right after the Supermutants pick up the globe in the Channel 6 lobby.
4. Donatello says that he's a Ninja Turtle, not a cartoon writer when responding to Michelangelo's question about how to get back into the building.
5. Vernon is gliding outside of Channel 6's canopy like a monkey, and Irma admits that Shredder tried to turn her and the rest of the crew into monkeys, despite never actually remembering it consciously.

2. With the shot of Rocksteady and Bebop crashing into the news studio, it is revealed that Channel 6's main newsroom is directly below the roof.
3. First appearance of the Channel 6 building's lobby.
4. Despite being a widely known super villain by this point, the people on the Channel 6 elevator do not recognize Shredder.
5. On the Family Home Entertainment VHS release, a few seconds between Acts Two and Three are edited out to appear that there is no commercial break present.
6. Bebop calls Krang the "boss" rather than Shredder right before he's instructed to retrieve the disk.

Episode 46: Beware the Lotus

3. When Krang meets Lotus in the abandoned apartment, four of the five Foot Soldiers do not have the Foot Clan logo on their heads.
4. Vernon reports that he is in Little Tokyo, but in the real New York City, there is no specific neighborhood with that name.

Catchphrase/Insult Countdown:
1. Right before April's report on romance begins, Michelangelo says "Cowabunga". (in stock voice)
2. Shredder calls the hotel owner an idiot during Leonardo's battle with Lotus.
3. Krang calls Splinter a mutant maggot as the Foot Soldiers prepare to destroy him.

1. Raphael tells Leonardo that Romeo that Juliet's goons captured Splinter, in reference to the Shakespeare tragedy.
2. Somewhat related to mistake number 4, Little Tokyo, U.S.A. was a 1942 film.
3. Raphael says "Can a Turtle Breakdance?", based on the '80s dance as they plan on rescuing Splinter.
4. Bebop says that Splinter was playing Possum, a children's outdoor game.

Fourth Wall Breaking Humor:
1. When Krang sees Lotus' ability on Shredder, he says that he'd applaud if he had hands.
2. Shredder says that no matter who loses that it will be someone he hates.
3. After Shredder says that he still has a few tricks left up his sleeve, Rocksteady grabs Shredder's arm and literally looks up his sleeve.
4. Lotus says that she is a professional after talking to Leo that she is being paid to kidnap Splinter.
5. After Burne says that April's report on romance will be a smash, the next scene shows a Foot Soldier literally smashing glass from the building the Turtles/Foot are in.

Kidnapping:
Splinter is kidnapped by Lotus and some Foot Soldiers at her secret hideout.

Notables:
1. First appearance of Lotus Blossom. This is also the first female ninja whose ever appeared in the TMNT universe. This would later inspire the creation of Karai during the Mirage Comics' City at War storyline in 1992.
2. Krang is in his bubble walker in this episode.
3. It is revealed that the Foot Soldiers' hands in this series contain both Caucasian and Black human colored hands, as shown on the shot where two Foot Soldiers grab Leonardo's arms.

Notables:
1. The only clip show of the series featuring archived footage of the episodes "Turtle Tracks", "Enter the Shredder" , and "Shreddered and Splintered" from Season 1.

With regards to the specific cut scenes, the following archived footage is used: the first archived footage from the episode Turtle Tracks begins with the scenes from the Hamato Yoshi origin story (archived audio about Splinter dishonoring the clan), and includes all scenes up to the Turtles' introductions. The order of the Turtles' introductions was switched to Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael. We then cut back to April's first report, followed by the Turtles' first battle with the street punks up to April fainting (with archived audio). After a couple more present day scenes, we then go to the cut of the Technodrome under the city from "Enter: The Shredder", and proceed right to the guest room where he chooses Bebop and Rocksteady to mutate. We then cut to the scene where Bebop and Rocksteady get mutated (with archived audio). After a brief cut back to the present time, we cut to Splinter getting captured by the Roadkill Rodney (with archived audio), followed by the Turtles discovering Splinter's walking stick (archived audio), then cut right to the Turtles entering the room where Splinter is held hostage in the Technodrome through the moment they rescue Splinter (with archived audio). We then move on the scene where April drives toward the zoo, through the scene where Bebop and Rocksteady first attack with their firearms (mostly archived audio except for a line Donatello explains about Bebop and Rocksteady's attack), until the second commercial break. A few seconds after the second commercial break, we cut right to the Bebop and Rocksteady battle in "Shreddered & Splintered" (with archived audio). About midway through the battle, we cut back to the present, then we cut to the scene where Krang first receives his android body (with archived audio). After the Shredder says "It's Alive!" the second time, we cut to the scene where Krang's android body grows larger over the turtles (archived audio with a couple of Michelangelo present day voice overs towards the beginning of the scene), with the Krang battle abridged to about a third of its original length. Finally, we have the "Turtle Soup" scene that ends with Shredder and Krang escaping underground (with archived audio), where the archived footage ends.
4. This marks the last official appearance of Roadkill Rodney, even though it was only archived footage.
5. The second commercial break comes at a point where there was no commercial break in the original episode (Enter the Shredder), making any climax purpose useless.
6. Although this episode uses the Murakami Wolf Dublin vanity plate at the end, the archived footage came from Murakami Wolf Swenson episodes.

4. When the smoke from Rasputin's arrow cleared, it revealed a shot of Shredder's discarded clothes next to Leatherhead's foot, but Shredder's clothing was still intact as he was actually in the Fountain of Youth.
5. When Michelangelo jumps out of the Fountain of Youth, Leonardo speaks in Raphael's voice.
6. In the cut scene showing April and Irma at the beach, there are hills and mountains visible in the distance, but in the real Florida, there are no significant hills at the coast.
7. After returning to the Technodrome, Rocksteady's eyes are colored white instead of yellow in the first shot.

Kidnappings:
The Turtles and April are kidnapped when Leatherhead sets up a secret trap that leaves them trapped in a net while being hanged from a tree.

3. The last episode in which the Turtles' eyelids have the same colors as their bandanas. Afterwards, the Turtles' eyelids will be green.

The title of this episode may refer to several different works of fiction, from the 1939 Googie Withers film, to the 1941 Mantan Moreland and Frankie Darro film, to the 1943 Busby Berkeley film, or to the Fred Astaire song. Like the Pizza Monsters in that episode, Grybyxes eating pizza (or any earth food) causes them to grow into giant monsters, but the difference is that unlike the Pizza Monsters who became evil upon microwave cooking, it doesn't become evil until after the tasting. Incidentally, the same music cue is used as April sees the Grybyx grow evil and turn into a monster. Grybyxes turn normal and smaller upon getting wet, in a parallel situation to the Pizza Monsters getting electrocuted. But a big difference is that water makes Pizza Monsters grow to full size, which is the opposite of Grybyxes. Also, the Grybyx flees the good guys like the small pizza monsters fleed en route to the sewers.
3. April's nails are pink in this episode, instead of the normal tan.

Mistakes:
1. Donatello puts a Killer Drone helmet on twice.
2. Rocksteady throws his dagger at a lever to help him and Bebop get away, but his dagger is made of metal, when its normally made of wood.
3. Just as the Turtles follow Rocksteady and Bebop who are trying to escape the power plant, Leonardo carries Donatello's bo staff. Also, the back of the module is spinning, which isn't normal for a transport model of the module. Its best to pay attention to Leonardo for this shot.
4. The weapons on the Turtles' shells are much smaller when they wear the Killer Drone armor.
5. When Shredder and Krang contract Rocksteady and Bebop, Bebop isn't holding the Comlink while he's being viewed on the Technodrome's monitor screen.
6. Just as the Technodrome loses power for the first time, the image of Bebop from an earlier contact is still on the view screen.
7. When Shredder's Transport Module crashes though the portal chamber's door at the end of the episode, the module's drill tip was pink instead of grey, and the damage to the door disappears as it comes to a stop.
8. Bebop's shoes are white instead of red when Shredder contacts him at the research plant when he and Rocksteady grasp hold of the hook to escape the sticky oil.
9. Bebop's bandolier is brown instead of black in parts of this episode.
10. The door on Vernon's newsvan is colored red, plus the "6" is red in the middle. The "6" is also drawn backwards.
11. The strapping in Leonardo's sword is grey when he dodges Rocksteady's dagger.
12. Both buttons on Shredder and Rocksteady's Comlinks are yellow instead of yellow and red.
13. Rocksteady is animated differently in Shredder's Comlink compared to the rest of the episode.
14. The Turtles' eye masks and belt initials were missing when they walked through the doors of CY-CLOMP's chamber. At the same time, the circular area where the belt initials are normally placed are colored brown instead of grey.
15. The rear top tread of Shredder's module is missing as it surfaces at the Fort.
16. When Rocksteady and Bebop escape from the power plant, the control panel and seats are missing inside their Transport Module.
17. After Rocksteady and Bebop crashes through the wall at the power plant, the outside shot showed a broken window instead of a broken wall.
18. Michelangelo and Donatello's shells are green instead of greenish yellow when they watch Rocksteady and Bebop crash through the wall.
19. The Transport Module's top tread and window is missing at it reaches the surface of the missle plant.
20. When Raphael looks at himself in his Killer Drone garb in the rest room's mirror, one of his sai from his belt is missing and his initial isn't reversed in his reflection.
21. Michelangelo's right leg and the bottom of his left leg were not drawn when Donatello spoke when he arrived at the Fort.
22. When Bebop backs away from the Turtles after they charge up on him at the plant, parts of the strapping on Donatello's bo are missing.
23. The top of Donatello's head flashes from purple and back when Rocksteady attacks on it.
24. When Leonardo says "and April is on her way there", the front bumper logo on the Turtle Van says "TURTLE", missing the "S".
25. Michelangelo's "M" is missing on his belt when he says "Turtles 4, Robots Zippo" as the Turtles are holding the mirrors.
26. The Turtles' belt initials are missing when Shredder and Krang watches them in their robotic drone outfits walking down a corridor on the Technodrome's portal screen.
27. The TV in whch the Turtles are watching at the end of the episode seems to be a lighter shade of brown than normal.
28. In the first shot of the final scene with April on the TV screen and Michelangelo holding a comic book, what appears to be a sideways "L" and a person is visible on the front cover, but in the next shot when we zoom in on Michelangelo and the comic book, the objects on the front cover are missing.

1. Shredder calls Bebop a bugbrain baboon when he asks him for the energy modules.

2. In the Technodrome, Shredder says to Krang "Look Who's Talking", which may have been a reference to the then-current film starring Kirstie Alley and John Travolta.
3. When Rocksteady answers his comlink and wonders if it is his "boss" Shredder, Shredder says "no, it's the Tooth Fairy!"
4. Numerous baseball references are used as the crystal is passed from person to person until Shredder takes hold, including "the pitch", "right over the plate", "strike one, strike two, and strike three you're out."

3. Due to a layering error, Donatello is shown hitting the hole in the Technodrome's Relay Room instead of falling into it when Krang uses his special weapon ball arm attachments to toss him and Michelangelo to the ground.
4. The Channel 6 logo on the back of the newsvan throughout this episode is colored blue instead of red with a white outline.
5. When April's news van rolls over right before the Technodrome reaches the surface, the "6" is backwards. Its best turn your head upside down to notice this error.
6. When the Technodrome arises before the second commercial break, the Foot Clan symbol on the entrance is red, but after the commercial break when it arises, it is grey.

2. After the Technodrome is seen on Vernon's news report, Donatello is colored as Michelangelo.
3. When we cut inside the Channel 6 Van at the start of the episode on Donatello, Leonardo, and Raphael, the interior and most of the outside of the van is colored yellow like the Turtle Van.
4. The Turtle Van is missing the word "TURTLES" on the bumper and is shown opaque with regards to the right window visible as the Turtles head to the power turbines.

Catchphrase/Insult Countdown:
1. Shredder's first line in this episode is "Wretched reptiles."
2. Shredder calls Rocksteady a honking hornhead after he steps on Shredder's foot.
3. Michelangelo says that its time to make Turtle Tracks right before the Technodrome unleashes its multiple saw blades.

2. At the Mount Rushmore Power Plant, Michelangelo is saying that the Technodrome is turning into a Daddy-Long-Legs 'drome, which was a novel written in 1912 by Jean Webster and was the basis of several films.
3. Inside the power plant, Donatello says that little David is about to bring down Goliath. in reference to the Old Testament story.
4. Raphael must have known how King Kong had felt based upon how the Technodrome's functions are programmed.

Another mistake in the Big Blowout is where the Technodrome is rolls over a highway interchange instead of plowing through it. The interchange is a little lower than the Technodrome's front cannon.

Regarding the missile, it takes NASA multiple fuel tanks just to get a shuttle into space. There's no way a tiny missile is going to get the Technodrome airborne, let alone free from the Earth's gravitational pull.

1. The title of this episode spoofs the 1959 Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s science fiction movie Plan 9 From Outer Space. In an interview by David Wise, he was asked by Fred Wolf to come up with as many references from that movie as possible. The 6 refers to the Channel 6 building.
2. In a studio inside Channel 6, Bebop and Rocksteady are taping an episode of "The Idaho Potatoes", which is a parody of the popular '80s cartoon California Raisins.
3. One of the lyrics of "The Idaho Potatoes" is "I heard it through the potato vine", a parody of the 1967 Motown song I Heard it Through the Grapevine.
4. When the computer in the Technodrome shows the plan for the Trans-Warp thrusters to take the Channel 6 building to Dimension X, sound effects from the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man are used.
5. Raphael: All I need is my Amphibian Express card. (A parody of American Express)
Rocksteady: I think we'll use our Oblivion Express! (Same parody done to the clothing store owner)
6. When Leonardo wonders what Michelangelo is worrying about in the lair, he thinks that it may be "Invaders from another Planet", a take-off on the Invaders from Mars films from 1953 and 1986.
7. Even though Bebop says that on Channel 6's schedule that there are Kung Fu kiddie cartoons on at 3:00 AM and although this was made in 1990, it can be understood to a contemporary audience as a nod to the Nickelodeon cartoon Kung Fu Panda.
8. One of the programs on the Channel 6 schedule that Rocksteady moved was "My Mother the Tank", a parody of the 1965 TV series My Mother, the Car.
9. When Bebop and Rocksteady wonder why Shredder contacted them at the Channel 6 office, he said that he dialed M for moron, a reference to the 1954 musical Dial M for Murder.
10. Raphael's remark about the "Leaning Tower of Pizza" is a spoof of Pisa, Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Notables:
1. First episode of Season 4. This brings about a number changes, including some new background music, the first appearance of the Technodrome on the Dimension X asteroid cleanly (drawn very rough at the end of the Big Blow Out), and a new closing credit sequence that includes the Turtles sliding down an elevator shaft from a shot of the episode "Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer the Universe." Also, Michelangelo's de facto weapon is now a Grappling Hook. However, his nunchucks are still visible on the back of his shell throughout this season (including the European Vacation episodes), and holds and swings them a few times even, including in this episode when the punk appears in front of the Channel 6 building.
2. Bebop and Rocksteasdy act as if they don't recognize Dimension X, but they spent the first half of Season 2 there. This could qualify as a mistake, but it is likely due to the mutants' low IQs and that they just don't understand it.
3. Bebop and Rocksteady last appeared as humans on screen in Shredderville. However, this was a dream, and the last time they appeared as humans in "real life" was in Enter, the Shredder. This is also their final appearance as "humans" in the series. However, they are not truly human since a holographic mirror still shows them as mutants.
4. The Pretendicon is similar to the Turtle Terminator in which it impersonates Splinter, much like Irma did in the earlier episode.
5. Lots of fanon consider that the European Vacation sideseason immediately follows this episode, given how the Turtles win a trip at the end of this episode. It is unclear however if the vacation is redeemed immediately. However, given that Michelangelo still has his nunchucks in his shell as well as with the Technodrome located on the Dimension X asteroid, it is presumed to take place in Season 4.
6. Irma appears in this episode but does not have any spoken lines.
7. This episode is animated by Murakami Wolf Dublin.
8. On the DVD release of this episode, the logo for Family Home Entertainment from 1991 is shown after the credits.

4. As Shredder enters Professor Willard's lab, Leonardo says "Shredder!" wearing a purple bandana like Donatello.

[Killer Moth]

Can't wait for you to do "Turtlemanic." I had noticed that Lt. Montoya, from the episode's opening scenes, looks a lot like Lt. Monahan from Quincy M.E. (His actor passed away, earlier this year.) Look it up, and between the facial design and the name, it isn't a coincidence.

The Rosebud reference, of course, was from Citizen Kane, but also a tad sly in characterization. Mainly, the Kane character had his own "weird collection" hobby, like the villain-of-the-day, Monroe Phlegm.

(Okay, saw the episode on DVD, yesterday, so it's fresh in my mind. Heh.)
