Don't you get skin cancer from lying out in the sun too often without sun-tan lotion on? Or is there another common way?

I believe it depends on what kind. The sun may be a common factor in many cases, but it's not always the cause and it might turn up in an area of the body that doesn't even get much sun exposure.

Not necessarily. The sun is a factor because the radiation breaks down cell DNA which is what leads to mutations. The mutations themselves are the cancer and some people are more susceptible to it than others, for a variety of reasons. A lot of people with Northern European ancestry are more susceptible as are people with red hair.

Case in point, my husband has albinism so ANY sunlight his body absorbs as there is no melanin to provide any protection. So even driving with sunlight coming through the window has an effect. So genetics can be a contributing factor as well.

Hope Greg recovers quickly. Not sure which type he has; melanoma is the worst. It sounds like he has a good team helping him!

This always sucks when it's a topic about cancer. But I hope everything goes well and gets completely better soon dude. Beat it with whirling nunchakus. Booyakasha!

Obviously I don't know him, but Greg seems like a very gentle, kind person to be around. Hoping for the best.

It sounds like he is. If he was having issues he would have said so, because I doubt 'I'm gonna need chemo' or 'I have melonoma' would be something he'd hide. Especially if he thinks it would spur others to prevent it by using sunscreen or getting their skin checked.

I could be wrong, but 'first surgery' might be where they do a biopsy, and the 'second surgery' might be them taking an inch of skin from around the mole or whatever if they find cancer to make sure they get everything.

Unless he's mentions melonoma somewhere, it's more then likely he has one of the less serious forms and they tend to be more easier to treat. Sometimes the second surgery is all you need to get rid of it completely. He's also probably tired because having the diagnosis 'cancer' is pretty much stressful, even if it's a lesser form of it.

I think after this, they'll probably just make him come in periodically to get checked by a dermatologist who will help him screen for any more skin cancers. This tends to be routine preventative procedure that they have the patients go through (sometimes also with photographs.)

Yeah I was wondering if it was another type, don't get me wrong, no-one wants any of them but I was hoping it wasn't melanoma.

They may have tried a simple removal for the first surgery (least invasive) and done a Mohs procedure if they didn’t get it all. I agree it doesn’t sound like he has melanoma but is likely healing from the removal. Who knows how large/how much they had to take. I’m glad he’s recovering!
