I already know a few people who are actively hoping that we never go back to "normal" because they never liked going out and dealing with people in the first place, and they're enjoying not being pressured by society to do so.

I'm not in love with that idea myself, but I know a lot of people would be perfectly fine never leaving their house again. I just kinda feel like that's no way to live. And I barely even really like people, I just think being antisocial isn't fun.

For businesses that work on computers all day, I do think "work from home" will be a lot more common from here on out. I mean if all you do is sit in an office on a computer all day, you can literally do the same work from home, and you have e-mails/phones/zoom meetings with your co-workers at home anyway if your supervisor/co-workers needs you to do something.

Obviously for other type of service jobs this is impossible, but for people who work in places like business offices on computers all day? Work from home is probably going to become a lot more common.

I mean, it makes sense, and there's a definite logic to it.

I kinda wish I had a skillset that would allow me to get a work-from-home job. For most of the last ten years, I worked at a place that was 20 minutes away from home, and I spent an absolute fortune on gas and car repairs. Ran like three cars into the ground just going to work every day. The past year, it was only ten minutes away, so that was better. But now that I only go out to go shopping once a week or every two, I'm saving literally hundreds of dollars that I just never had before. You don't even realize you're spending almost $400 a month on putting gas in your car, until you just stop going anywhere. I put like $20 a month in the tank, now. So I'm actually saving a lot of money I'd have no choice but to spend if I were working.

...And blowing it on f*cking toys because YOLO BABY! But seriously, once I go back to work I'm gonna have to spend money on gas and car repairs again, so might as well take advantage of the situation in the meantime, right?

But yeah, I think the attitudes toward "work from home" are going to shift greatly going forward. Like you said, the capacity to physically do it has been around for a long time now, and there's a lot of ways it can be more efficient. Eliminating commutes, cutting down on pollution, letting workers keep more of the money they'd otherwise spend commuting, etc. etc.

The only reason it's ever been an issue, is that bosses don't want to pay people for "doing nothing", and if you're out of sight they can't check up on you to make sure you're not scratching your ass on their nickel. They absolutely don't want to pay anyone a lot of money to stay at home watching porn and Netflix in between doing 15 minutes of actual work during their "8 hour shift", which let's be honest, is exactly what happens. So I can totally understand why most bosses insist on people coming to work at a place they can be watched, even if it's inefficient and unnecessary.

I do think that's gonna change, though. For one thing, as the younger generation raised on technology and the internet moves up and start to become bosses, attitudes in general have become more relaxed. They're generally less obsessed with "cracking the whip" and making sure that you're hustling for every last second of your work shift, and simply concerned with the job getting done in a satisfactory manner. That's been a growing trend for at least the last ten years.

I do see the possibility of employers insisting on paying a lower salary for these jobs, though, or at least trying to. If I were a boss, I'd definitely pull that sh*t. "You don't need to commute, so since your travel expenses are $0 per week, I've decided that you can live on $500 less a month than I was paying you before. And also, I don't know for a fact that you're actually working, so I figure, if I'm being very generous and assuming that you're working for about four hours out of every eight - and let's be honest, that is a VERY generous assumption, and I know that because I'm not a complete idiot - then I should only pay you for four hour shifts instead of eight."

Maybe they won't get away with it, but let's be real, they'd be stupid not to try.

I think with this quarrantine going on...I'm going to be hesitant to fully return to going out again. I've always been a bit of a homebody. I started going to church and everything...but since things have reverted to being online, I hadn't really paid much attention or interacted as much...so I'm falling back into my old bad habits of sitting around the house. I was actually enjoying interacting with the people at the church on Sundays and interacting with people for the Tuesday night community dinner. I feel more comfortable in settings like the latter, though.

Like Leo655, I don't have a skill set that would allow me to work from home, unless I started my own childcare center or run a childcare service out of my home and that's not happening. I wouldn't want that responsibility and it would take a lot to get licensed. The house isn't big enough, imo, to try to have my own childcare set up. I work with babies and toddlers, so yeah....can't work from home doing that.

My mother works from home, but she'd been doing that on and off for years. She's been at her company since 1995 and she's a good, diligent worker so she has the freedom to choose to work from home. When she had to take care of my grandmother, she was allowed to work from home when necessary. With my father now and his dialysis stuff, she was working home a couple of days a week because my mother didn't like the idea of always working from home. It also wasn't a big deal since I was back home now. When the pandemic stuff started, since she's in her 60s, they allowed her to work from home and now she likes it because she gets more done around the house. She takes her breaks when she wants, too. She likes that flexibility and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, she gets out of the house by taking dad to dialysis and she also does grocery shopping sometimes on those days. So for her, it's a good balance and likes being at home. She just hopes nothing ever goes wrong with our internet or her computer.

I'm still working from home. It's nothing short of a miracle since I thought I'd have to go back to the office after summer, at this point I'm probably going to continue working from home till the end of the year hopefully.

I have saved so much money not having to buy metrocards to go into Manhattan, as well as not having to buy lunch. Not to mention saving 2 hours a day on commute, I just wake up from bed, take a shower, and 10 minutes later I'm ready for work. I don't have to take a subway for 1 hour front and back, so I have 2 extra hours a day.

God this is the high life. Assuming this ends eventually I got to find some other job where I work from home permanently. I can't ever go into the office again.

I would literally work from home forever if I could. I know this is going to end eventually, I'm going to have to start researching permanent work from home jobs. I know there's at least some stuff you can work from home doing, without being too much a hassle.

If you work on a computer all day, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to do the same thing you can at home than in an office. All it is, is a change of setting and your co-workers talking around you and the supervisor/manager or whomever being around.

I only ever leave my house whenever no one in the house feels like cooking so one of us goes out to pick some food for the family. Of course there's grocery shopping as well. I do go for walks around the park whenever I feel cooped up in the house. Sometimes I wished my park had a lake so I can watch the ducks. Lakes and rivers relaxes me.

Being on Furlough was pretty cool being paid more than I did when I was working but unemployment has been running low since August. At this point, I don't know whether I should wait it out to see if we get a bit more money the following weeks or if I should just look for another job. My job at the theater is still closed since our state has so many Covid-19 cases.

Pro tip: If anyone IS needing/looking for anything, even if just temporary retail for a bit, check to see if any of the Halloween stores are still hiring.

My brother in law has been involved in turning a few empty stores around here into the annual Halloween shops, but they've supposedly had hardly anyone actually applying to work in them once they are ready to open and need people.

I've been wondering if this will at least be the thing that starts us on the path of telecommuting becoming more common in general.

If it ends up making it easier for me to pick up a flexible 2nd part time I can do from home alongside what I do now, that would be fantastic.

Does absolutely zero for me, I have no skills in those areas. The only things I'm good at involve me being around people in-person. Even in places where I'm deficient or inexperienced I've been able to get opportunities by being charming and knowing how to talk to people. When personal skills are the only thing that puts money in your pocket, working a secluded job is the exact opposite of what you want.

I am glad that some people will be afforded some kind of opportunities from this fiasco, but for people like me we're more or less completely obsolete now. And that's depressing. Feels like I wasted my life but how could I or anyone have foreseen this?

We'll see what happens. I have a tentative part-time offer on the table but it's conditional on things opening up in the near future and who knows if that'll happen. Otherwise, I got nothin'.

I have no real computer skills whatsoever besides the basic stuff everyone knows how to do, and if you can find data entry work it's just typing in numbers into columns or addresses, names, phone numbers, etc.

I basically do less than an hour of real work any given day and the other 7 hours I'm "surfing the web" like I'm doing now, watching something on computer on my second screen (usually a movie or TV show on 1.5x speed), and if I'm playing a handheld game on 3DS I can do that too.

On my lunchbreak I play videogames on my Switch or PS4 and my lunch is basically anytime I want.

I'm praying to god I can continue working from home till the end of the year at least. The moment they say we all have to come back to the office is the day I'm going to look for a new job.

There's quite a bit of home jobs right now actually. Though have you ever thought of maybe looking for more quieter jobs like a library, Cubed?

The fvcker admits he doesn't read. You gotta like books to last more than a week in a library position.

The fact that you do all this and still refuse to pay for your entertainment and pirate everything instead is astonishing to me.

As for working at a library, does that even pay well? I'd rather stay in some sort of computer oriented field. I have no desire to "climb the ladder" as I have no career goals whatsoever. So as long as I get paid, I am content.

I will have my cake and I will eat it too.

I pay for videogames. Just pre-ordered the Mario 3D All-stars collection on amazon yesterday actually. Of course I used a $25 off coupon I had, because I am still "El Cheapo" but I pay for all my games.

Slacking for the most benefits is an alright strategy but effort into a job you actually like and/or is rewarding is a better alternative. The fact that you'll be better off Financially by doing productive work should be enough to incentivize you. Being el "cheapo" is fine, but not at the expense of bad food, services or experiences. We only live once, I'm fairly frugal and spend money carefully, but some things to get quality you gotta pay up and it's worth the money, that's why it's important to get a high paying job and that doesn't mean climbing the corporate ladder, that's a bad strategy to make big money. More travel, less collectibles.

Working from home has given me plenty of time to do other stuff that I needed to take care of, hopefully I'll be done by the end of the year. And good news, the trend is for work from home, so many people will not be making the transition back, things have changed forever.

Seems like I'm still going to be working from home for the rest of the year at least, or else they would have said something by now. Don't expect to come back to the office for winter so I guess maybe January at the earliest? I've been working at home since April 15th.

I have about 12-15 hours of free time a day now to do whatever I want, and the lack of having to commute for 2 hours a day or wake up early is great. I also can't get over how much money I'm saving not having to buy subway fare to get into Manhattan and not having to buy lunch out, it's mind boggling how expensive that is when you add it up at the end of a week. I would work from home forever if I could.

Covid has been over for a long time... at least for me! I mean when it started and up until about June... groceries and driving so the car wouldnt die were my only outings... going out was rare!

Now, I'm out 3 to 5x a week Most people are wearing masks and in my local news about 60% of all Trump supporters have died of the virus (that is... the county register estimates that roughly 60% of my town's Republican party have died in the last 3 months due to virus or age or whatever). My Grandpa has Covid at 90 yrs old and i think when you get that crotchety and bitter and shriveled and angry at the world, your time needs to come eventually.

But yeah, every restaurant, every bar, every store, every park... everything is open! Just like it was... FAST FOOD JOINTS are all hiring so there's plenty of jobs to go around! COVID kinda passed us by. We'll see how long my town has left when that 2nd wave hits.

I go out everyday.

I work, can't work from home.

I'm what they called an essential worker, so I never stopped working even when this thing was at it's worst. And by the grace of God no one in my family has gotten it and if we did we had no symptoms or anything like that.
