Hmm. Interesting theory, but I feel like Disney will want to capitalize on having a female protagonist. And plus I just think Rey's cool and I want her to be a bad ass hero for the duration of the franchise

What's really weird is there's no new standout antagonist in these new movies. One thing Star Wars always had was cool villains. Look at Darth Maul, he practically had no character in Episode 1 (I know the comics and cartoons fleshed him out more), but everyone loved him back then regardless.

All we've gotten since is generic evil admirals and Kylo Ren. Snoke is so awful so far he feels like a character from another series. I at least hope Kylo Ren is fleshed out more in Episode 8 and 9, but other than that I don't expect much.

If I were 10 years old right now I don't think I'd be hyped to see Kylo Ren in the next movie or be buying his action figure.

Dude, who WOULD?
I straight up laughed when I saw his ridiculous lightsaber design and when he unmasked himself. The dude looks so dweeby I can't take him seriously as a villain at all. Not to mention his whole angsty-teenage attitude.

The promotion campaign kicks off with the summer special issue of Vanity fair featuring the late galactic legend Carrie Fisher on the cover.

Lots of info and pictures from the Vanity Fair story including our first look at Laura Dern and Benecio Del Toro's characters.

Interesting.

It still bugs me to no end that Poe, Finn, etc., are all called "Rebels"? Rebels against what? "Rebels" because that sounds more familiar to people who are still beating off to the OT on repeat? "Rebels" because the New Republic doesn't approve of anyone fighting the Imperial remnants, who are the true rebels... even after these Imperial remnants just wiped out 5 New Republic worlds, including its capital?

So, so stupid.

IMHO the problem with Disney's strategy with this franchise is that the entirety of the storytelling so far comes from your recognition of a previously established character/event/motif/set piece, rather than through allowing new stories to be told.

(That's Luke's first lightsaber! These are the Death Star plans! Here's C-3P0. Why does he have the red arm? I don't know, who cares? Here's Darth Vader's helmet? How did it get to the First Order after the Endor battle? Who knows?)

It just de-legitimizes what they're doing to the point where it all feels like expensive fan fiction. If you're a young kid today or just someone who's never seen the OT or PT, and you watch Force Awakens and Rogue One, what exactly drives you to become a fan at that point?

However, I give the Marvel comic writers credit--they've managed to fill in important gaps from the OT storylines while also creating new characters and adding to the lore.

Darth Maul was a better character when he didn't have a background. At least he was the mysterious silent type who we could come up with a story.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan and feel little excitement that a new movie comes out in a little over 4 months. I'm sure I'll get more excited when it's closer but it's crazy to think that I'm not hyped for a new Star Wars film months in advanced, same with Marvel.

This movie so far looks like a retread somewhat of The Empire Strikes Back with Rei training, I'm thinking the movie will be much different but it still means I'm not really excited. The fact that it's all pandering. I really hope they knock it out of the park and go a different route, it's just that so much is already cemented with it being a clone of the OT, I just don't know if it'll be able to do it.

Contrary to what some of you may think from my posts, I don't hate Disney and I like Marvel and Star Wars but it's hard to get excited. I want to.

Some promo pics have leaked. You've got the usual in there (Rey, Luke, Finn, Kylo) but there's a shot of Snoke and a bunch of his guards.

Man, Snoke is hideous. I'm honestly surprised how creepy looking they made him.

Uh oh... Luke's action figure does not include a lightsaber. You know what that means.

So let me get this straight... "The Last Jedi" completed all of its principal photography July of LAST YEAR, several reshoots have been completed this year... and now they've hired a screenwriter for "The Last Jedi"? Huh? We are way, way past the time for screenwriters.
