Wow, I vaguely remember this. Prime-time movies on network television were such a big deal back then!

Quote:
So, when Astronema first meets the Turtles, she says she wants them to destroy the Power Rangers, but Raph laughs it off and insists that the Power Rangers aren’t real. What? HOW can anyone question their existence? They pilot a giant robot that knocks over skyscrapers EVERY WEEK!

Even weirder, when the Turtles first show up to help the Rangers fight Electrotrap, the Yellow Ranger immediately, IMMEDIATELY identifies them as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. By name! So, if I’m understanding this correctly: The Power Rangers, the team that solves every problem with a giant robot that stomps through city streets, are an urban legend that many refuse to believe exist, and the Ninja Turtles, a team of stealth experts who live in the sewers and only leave after dark in order to maintain the secrecy of their existence, are public figures recognized and beloved by all.

Guess this solves that mystery!

The Power Rangers were already killing TMNT in the ratings and then they go on the premier of TMNT's second movie on TV to plug their show to send the turtles into hiatus until 1997.

So this was the start of their crossover that eventually happened

They mentioned The X-Files, which, based on the year this was originally broadcast, must have been in its first season back then, as was MMPR, I'm guessing.

Looks like Friday nights weren't quite considered to be a "death slot" back then.

I dunno if it was a copyright issue, but it always kind of annoyed me that the Power Rangers barely commented on the movie. One of them near the end says something like "That Shredder sure is bad." and I'm like "Yea, no f*cking duh!!! Now do you have anything to say that relates specifically to this movie or are you just gonna name drop?!"

You're taking this too seriously, they weren't meant to be be commenting on the movie, this wasn't MS3K and stuff like that isn't even done today on TV. They just paid them to present the movie since they were popular and having them would get more viewers for the movie and fans of the movie who didn't check out Power Rangers might do the same, it's just basic promotion. They were paid to say "we'll be right back" basically, who knows if they've ever seen the movie, based on their ages I'm guessing they didn't but do know the basics of who the turtles are.

What from I understand at the time it was that slot that got The X-Files the huge ratings. Sunday's on Fox were considered the death slot unless it was sports.

It's so weird seeing this knowing that eventually the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would take over the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in terms of popularity. I know I eventually succumbed to the hype for a bit around 1993 or 1994, but I even remember at the time being a little ticked off as a kid that the Power Rangers were the cool new thing compared to the Turtles. It's strange how we remember stuff like that.

I know my interest in the Power Rangers didn't last long at all though and by the time the movie hit in 1995, I was already out.
