Let's go over the scrapped ideas Sony had for the Spider-Man franchise, shall we?
I know they have to reach in order to make spin-offs (Spidey ain't as extensive as X-Men after all) but yeesh...

Not me. Least interestimg of Spider-Man's enemies.
Its a stretch to make a decent movie out of Venom and how anything can work without Spider-Man involved and it being a quality product is likely zero to none. Studios need to quit announcing films until they go into casting stage of a film. Learn from DC!

All I remember reading from Spiderman comic is that he’s a hunter nutcase that likes prancing around naked in his house.

Think about the Gilligan's Island episode where the big game hunter had conquered all species except for his own so he hunts an oddity of his own kind, Gilligan. Kraven was turned on to hunting a fellow human after his older half-brother was humiliated by him. Only in Kraven's Last Hunt did he realize he was hunting another human and allowed to defeat his prey and see things the way Spider-Man does. Its bull to bring him back. His story was told, character realized his goal of killing Spider-Man was foolish so he does himself in with all of his goals checked off. Why a hunter who was not evil would want to hunt anorher human and consider it the ultimate challenge is beyond me. Sorry, I love Spider-Man's rogues gallery, but I allways saw Kraven as questionable in motive and concept. Spider-Man: The Animated Series did well in handling him and limited him to two episodes. I cant say that for the rest of the character's other media history.

I’ll have to re-read the comic again. I bought it because it’s listed as among the greatest Spiderman comic stories ever told. Cheers.

It looks like Nick Spencer is trying to build him up as a potential major threat again in his ASM run, so I'd be on the look out for that

Crazy theory: Sony sees Disney deal for Fox happening. They start "developing" contradictory stuff, beginning with Venom. The worst thing is if Venom is a hit. Then Disney has to listen. Then Sony follows things up with Kraven about to go into production...
My point is... is Sony just jockeying to get Disney to pay maximum top dollar for Spider-Man rights? It actually seems a bit smart and savvy, if true.

Seems kind of silly, seeing how their deal with Disney is set-up. I believe Sony just thinks it's better to take a cut of Disney's profits from "real" Spider-Man movies, while they can safely experiment with the somewhat limited character pool of Spider-Man in hopes that they can make something that works in their favor. You know, not all eggs in the same basket. Main Spider-Man movies will always make Sony some money while investing very little in them (Sony only gave around 35 million to Homecoming's budget), then they can focus on smaller budgeted spin-off franchises they collect all the profits from. Even if Venom and Spider-Verse end up flopping, I'm willing to bet neither one cost more than 100 million. |

Keep Petey's dead parents as the American spies. Keep Aunt May as Peter's moral compass. I don't mind Felicia Hardy becoming the Black Cat, but Hardy as VJ? Nope. |

The more I hear of Sony putting out these ideas, the more I worry for their future outside the Playstation division. Kraven is not good enough to get his own movie.

Problem is they are lacking talent and their managers just can not sit on their hands for 5 seconds without interfering with production of the movies. This what have killed both Raimi's Spider-Man and ASM. |
