Well the Music from the original is fantastic... that's what made me fall in love with Queen. And how can you not love Klytus?

I'm sure they are gonna modernize the new movie.

Oh, of course... part of me is eager to find out what kind of soundtrack they're going to have. But you know it's a good chance that they're most likely going to give it a complete change of tone... either dark and gritty, or really campy. Depends on who's directing...

So guessing there's no Queen soundtrack on this?

I also remember the cartoon from the 70s which were also good. They can't redo the original film since the campy stuff wouldn't work today.

I'll have to give this movie a go. When I was a kid of about 10 or so and watching Scifi's Cartoon Quest weekday mornings before school in the early 90's, I first came across Flash Gordon via Defenders of The Earth if anyone remembers that show. I've always liked that incarnation of Flash as well as Ming The Merciless. Ming is not of Mongolian descent here, but rather some sort of alien species with green skin and pointed ears from what I've been told. I'm wondering if that's how they'll portray him in the upcoming movie if indeed Ming is to be Flash's main adversary. I'm curious whether or not Ming's ice robots as well as Garax their leader will appear. I'm not able to read the old comic strips so I have no idea if characters like Garax, the ice robots, Ming's son and daughter, and the men of frost will show up or if they were created specifically for the 80's animated series. Hopefully, the director and crew will have quite a bit of lor to draw upon. I'm hoping the tone is somewhat darker and less campy, but only time will tell.

The character of Flash Gordon pre-dates characters like Superman and Batman. He's been around since the early 1930's and has appeared in several serials, comic strips, cartoons, and movies. I was 10 when the Flash Gordon movie came out in 1980 and I loved it!! It's pretty hard to watch today though (sooooo cheesy). @blindturlte02: I don't think Ming was ever of 'Mongolian" descent...he was an alien ruler from the planet Mongo.
Did any of you guys watch the Syfy show that was on a few years ago? It was a "modern" attempt at the character and it was pretty bad. Let's hope the new movie sticks close to the original material. BTW... If I remember correctly, George Lucas created Star Wars because he was unable to get a Flash Gordon movie made. Rick Last edited by rickwj324; 04-23-2014 at 08:34 AM. |

Spoiler:
Then they made a 90s cartoon of it. Instead of Thun, a humanoid lioness was part of the team. Last edited by TigerClaw; 04-23-2014 at 10:53 AM. |

The Flash Gordon reboot is finally happening. Its gonna be directed by Julius Avery for Fox. He's the director of the film Overlord which is produced by JJ Abrams. Matthew Vaughn was previously gonna direct it but will produce it instead.

Plus Taika Waititi is a good director. So I hope they go through with this.

Unpopular opinion but I don't really care for the 80s movie. Anything after the first season of the Filmation animated series isn't really good.

I'spose Ming the Merciless will not be in the movie.
As well as all of the 80s goofiness of sci-fi / fantasy adaptation hybrids popular back than. Thor 3 had similar tone, I guess, but it felt like an attempt to make modern version of 80s style and it just doesn't work, IMO. The same with Guardians of the Galaxy. You can imitate the style, but rarely a spirit of time. |

I know some Flash Gordon purists hate the movie for being too campy, and I can definitely see where they're coming from - I'm a purist about most things, and I generally dislike camp - that movie is just a f*cking blast.
I mean, the soundtrack does some of the heavy lifting, sure. But c'mon.
