Yeah, I still can't get over seeing Rasputin wearing sunglasses. I think ultimately the character/creature design was a mixed bag. Hellboy looked great, but Abe looked pretty wack. The odd changes like making Liz a romantic interest rather than a little sister-type character were really not needed.

Francis himself from Deadpool joins the cast

Excited to join the #Hellboy cast as Ben Daimio. All praise due to the creator @artofmmignola #BPRD

apparently this character is Asian-American in the comics and people are upset that he is being white washed

Ed Skrein has left the reboot because of the white washing controversy

I have no feelings on this character or property or actor, but that is pretty cool of Skrein to do that.

I hope they paid him something. I'm conflicted about this. I understand where everyone is coming from, and if the actor really did step aside because he thought it was the right thing to do then that shows a certain amount of integrity.. At the same time, there is a certain lack of artistic integrity in letting twitter call the shots. The next actor in this guy's shoes is in for a rough ride.

Bad move on whoever cast him, good move on him for backing out. I dunno why Hollywood has such a hate-boner for Asians.

They should've cast asian actor to play asian character.
Twitter has nothing to do with it. Or at least, I doubt it is the main reason.

I agree they should have cast someone else, but based on the way this went down, I don't see how you can say Twitter had nothing to do with it. The dude took the job, and backlash made him quit. Do you think he would have done so sans backlash?

"Made him quit."

It's true.
Twitter had a knife and everything.

How many people were talking about Ed Skrein before he did this? How many people are talking about Ed Skrein now?

Twitter "outrage" was a factor in Ghost in the Shell's hard time at the box office; that film came out only a few months ago and of course featured a white actress playing a historically Asian role. You think Lionsgate wasn't going to learn from that incident once the same thing started happening with Hellboy? Either Skrein was pressured to leave the project (with a lump of cash in hand) or he's the selfless hero he presents himself as and didn't want to be the man who caused the film to get bad word-of-mouth in a few months.

GitS was of course a hackwork film that alienated a lot of its potential audience in several ways, but ScarJo's casting was a big turn-off to everyone.

Not just Skrein, but Hellboy in general. The last movie came out like 10 years ago; something like this is a great way to get people's ears to perk up, especially in the tornado of comic book films we have now.

If Ghost in the Shell, or The Last Airbender, had been better movies in general the outrage would have been easily forgotten.

Calling this Twitter Outrage dismisses the fact that this is what cultural shifts look like.

I stand by my original assessment of this being a gutsy movie on the actor's part, because it's still a gamble. It'll only be a savvy one if it pans out in his favor.

I'm saying Hollywood has a selective memory, but the public does not.
What people are dismissing as Twitter Outrage isn't anything new. It's always been there. What's changed is that now people are paying attention to it.

I think it is an overstatement - GITS, while famous to certain degree, is nowhere near some kind of "universally super known property" for majority of the people to care who is playing the main character.
I am pretty sure, that it lackluster box-office more tied to the quality of the movie itself, rather any other factors.

All of this is correct, in the instance of GITS. I almost undoubtedly would have gone and seen it myself if it didn't look like a soft, PG-13 hackjob.
