I haven't owned a Nintendo produced system since the SNES. But this kind of stuff makes me consider getting a Switch. But I've got a stack of PS4 games I've never played, and a few PS3 games still in the shrink wrap that I'll probably never play at this point, so I'm torn.

The truth is that nowadays I'm more likely to want to play a game like F-Zero where I can get into it for a while and then just turn it off than I am to get into some kind of long campaign.

I'm dying to play The Sinking City, but I don't know how long that will sit here either.

I remember when Starfox was a huge deal. The cartridge had a special hardware chip installed so that it could run on the SNES....

At the time it was amazing.

That SuperFX chip makes it sort of a big deal even today. It's the reason that game was never on any of the Virtual Consoles along with the other SNES games, being rereleased first on the SNES mini and now this.

Since I have the SNES mini, I'm not personally super into this but I'm happy for everyone who wanted them for so long. Now, if they put more games left off the mini (DKC 2 and 3, Chrono Trigger specifically) I'll be pumped.

You're telling me Nintendo can't figure out how to adjust for the SuperFX chip in their virtual consoles in 2019... but 20 years ago kids figured out how to do it in PC emulators?

I can't believe it, but my theory is that most video game companies never gave any serious thought to a structured Archives of their original codes. Sega was notoriously neglectful about this and probably relied upon internet ROMs for most of their early "classic packs" released during and after the Dreamcast era.

If any company took their backlog and documents seriously, I would think it would be Nintendo, but even they weren't above ripping a ROM and re-selling it on Virtual Console, despite the fact that they are always serving up "cease & desist" orders to fan creators.

I know the FX chip was notoriously difficult to emulate, but clearly enough dedicated amateurs figured it out enough that it shouldn't even be an issue for Nintendo to port/emulate their own content onto their own digital platforms.

Great to see this finally happen as the SNES is my favorite retro console. And releasing 20 games off the bat is pretty cool.

Was hoping for the DKC trilogy to appear right away but it'll happen soon. I got to say I did not expect getting Stunt Race FX but it makes me super happy.

We'll likely get N64 games next year.

This is obviously great news, but tbh, I kinda feel like an idiot now for having bought some NES and SNES games on the Wii virtual console and especially on the 3DS virtual console, considering how rather recent the 3DS one is for SNES games. And now you can play them on the Switch "for free" as long as you subscribe for 9.99 a year. Which saves you a lot more money than buying each title individually. But oh well.

Guess they'll eventually add GB/GBC/GBA games as well?

It's 20 bucks a year, 4 bucks a month or 8 for every 3.
