Netflix's Dracula

Has anyone else watched this? I stumbled upon it by accident the other day and binged it. I'm really divided on what to think about it.

On the one hand, I'm a big fan of the Dracula story, and I find a lot of the adaptations to be very entertaining. On the other hand, this one seemed a bit off.

A lot of the story seems painfully forced. The first two parts went too far in depth with little connection to the third, and there's this weird issue of an unnecessarily gender-bent Van Helsing.

I like the actor playing Dracula. I think he does it very well, despite the incessant blood puns that rarely landed. The "Murder on the Demeter" was a cool idea.

I just feel like this is two different stories that don't fit together. Either go with the modern update or go with the Victorian retelling. Doing both didn't seem to fit together very well.

Your thoughts?

I'm a huge Dracula fan in many mediums (I even made him the central villain in my Highlander full feature on Amazon). I half heartedly started this the other night and just watched a few minutes... it was the nunnery with the one asking an apparently vampirized Jonathan Harker "So did Dracula do sexual intercourse on you?" and him looking super sketchy. I just turned it off at that point.

Some people I trust swear by this show so I'll give it a proper chance later.

There's just something off about it. I can't place my finger on why it doesn't feel right. It just doesn't.

Obviously, the gender-bend thing didn't sit right with me. It didn't seem to fit a purpose, and I was expecting this to get preachy. But then it didn't really hold with that, as other diversity characters appeared who were less than savory in their portrayal.

Some of the characters were completely unnecessary.

Tell me what you think after you watch it.

Itís a Moffat show so Iíve been a bit hesitant to watch it, I absolutely love Bram Stokerís book and the characters so itís on my to watch list.

I didnít know about the changes to Van Helsing, but the good doctor hasnít had a lot of good adaptations and been really varied so sure why not, weíre never gonna get a faithful Van Helsing anyway.

Loved the second episode the most. Had the right atmosphere and the kind of twists Moffat is good at. I even felt a bit for Agatha in that episode, where I thought she was too smug in the first episode.

Who got gender-bent? Like Jonathan Harker fills the Mina Harker role, kind of?

Eugh, if so.

I'm told Van Helsing is female here but I haven't seen it myself yet.

Spoiler:
There are actually two female Van Helsings...both female and identical to one another, one from the past, and another, a descendent, in modern day London

I enjoyed Dracula but.

Spoiler:
I didn't really like the ending, it was strange.

I wasn't sure about it at first, but I liked the first 2 episodes. Didn't care for the third. Haven't read the book, but I think I might now.
