My experience with soft heads is they are usually slightly different looking to the body. Less shine maybe color slightly off.
I found this that might be helpful too. http://tmntthecollective.blogspot.co...rsions-of.html http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=43384

You can generally tell whether or not it's a soft head by the hole punch. If the hole punch is bigger (fatter, maybe 1/2 inch from bottom to top), it's definitely not a soft head.
If you have a thinner, more narrow hole punch, it's more likely to be a soft head, although not for sure. The only way to tell for sure is to see if there's glare on the head, it would look like the rest of the figure when you shine a light on it. There is nothing on the package that is going to indicate whether or not it's a soft head. |

To spot a softhad: yellow plastron instead of a warmer mustard color, seamless head sculpt which is less shiny then the hard plastic body.
There's 2 softhead releases, the first one had a Club Flyer inside the bubble behind the weapon rack, and the second release came without the club flyer and is significantly less valued then the 1st release. |

There are also really squishy softheads and some that put up more resistance when squeezed.

I was going to suggest squeezing. Then I realized OP said it was still in the box.
