I think the term your looking for is "live-action hybrid".

And y'know, I used to like Tim Burton. Quite a lot. And I've still got a lot of fondness for his early work. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe the shine just came off the apple, I dunno. But I still feel like his late '80s/early '90s work holds up pretty well. But lately... man. His whole New Disney Era is bringing out the absolute worst in him, creatively.
Did you see Big Eyes? That was pretty good.

Wait a minute...Tim Burton? Who's known for extremely dark takes on everything he directs? I'm wondering how that'll go down with a movie like Dumbo, which is one of the most lighthearted things I've ever seen. And one of my favorite films of all time...hm. Not so sure how I feel about this. I'm intrigued - I'll leave it at that.

Not quite sure why, but my mind immediately went to Pokemon upon reading that. "Surf. The Movie."

It was the 1940's. Times were different.

It's probably a bit more then delightfully ignorant political incorrectness of the 40's, when the leader of the crows was named "Jim Crow".

Okay, but aside from the name, I wouldn't classify the depiction of the crows as "racist" when they were amongst the only characters in the movie who were sympathetic and helpful towards the main character. They were made out to be good guys.

I'm not denying they have some stereotyping, but I find it kind of humorous that people are always quick to brand that scene as racist, and COMPLETELY ignore that bit at the beginning with faceless dark men building the tent whilst singing: "We work all day, we work all night, we never learned to read or write . . . we don't know when we get our pay; and when we do, we throw our pay away." Buuuut, nah. Ignore that. Some crows with bad English are the ones you should bash.

It's just as bad.

Like I said, it was 1941. Lots of stuff that would be called racist today was considered tongue-in-cheek & passable back then.

The crow characters are not racists. The people who made the characters are.

The crows aren't racist; they're stereotypical.

It's been a while since there has been news about this, but yesterday it was reported that Will Smith is in early talks to play a father of some children who befriend Dumbo.

Also, Tom Hanks has reportedly been offered to play a villain in the film. That would certainly be a departure from the characters he usually plays. However, he has another project that would potentially prevent him from starring in it.

Eva Green has been cast as a trapeze artist.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hea...n-dumbo-984270

Danny Devito joined the film as a ringleader.

Will Smith declined the role of the father with two children and Disney got Colin Farrell to play the character instead.

Michael Keaton is now in talks to play the film's villain.

Keaton confirmed on Good Morning America that he's playing the villain. This will mark the first time in 25 years that he will be working alongside Tim Burton and Danny DeVito since Batman Returns.

Disney has a release date for the film on March 29, 2019. Casting has officially been announced.

Quote:
Production is underway for the live-action reimagining of Disney’s 1941 animated classic “Dumbo.” Directed by visionary filmmaker Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”), the film stars Golden Globe® winner Colin Farrell (“In Bruges,” “The Lobster”), Golden Globe winner Michael Keaton (“Birdman,” “Beetlejuice”), Emmy® and Golden Globe winner Danny DeVito (“Batman Returns,” “Big Fish”), BAFTA Award winner and Golden Globe nominee Eva Green (“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Dark Shadows”), and introduces Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins in their first film roles. The cast also includes Roshan Seth, DeObia Oparei, Sharon Rooney and Douglas Reith. Katterli Frauenfelder (“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Big Eyes”), Derek Frey (“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Frankenweenie”), Ehren Kruger (“Ophelia,” “Dream House”) and Justin Springer (“TRON: Legacy”) are producing from a screenplay by Kruger. Nigel Gostelow (“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Dark Shadows”) is the executive producer. “Dumbo” is slated for release on March 29, 2019.
Plus, a brief synopsis has been released.

Quote:
Disney’s new live-action feature film “Dumbo” introduces Holt Farrier (Farrell), a former circus star who finds his life turned upside down when he returns from the war. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) enlists Holt to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when Holt’s children (Parker and Hobbins) discover that Dumbo can fly, persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Keaton) and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant (Green) swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star.

As someone who loves the original and counts it among one of my favorite movies ever, I am very unhappy this is a thing. That description of the movie sounds worse than I imagined. And considering Burton was directing another of these wretched Disney remakes I had low expectations already.
