A 100-hour work week

Would you be able to manage it? How would you manage it?

Discuss your answers below.

You couldn't. If your work week was still the usual 5 days, that would leave you with only 20 hours of free time... 4 hours a day to sleep, eat, get other stuff done, and drive to/from work. Not possible.

If you worked 7 days a week non stop like that, well... it would leave you 9.7 hours each day. Still not enough for everything. It's basically a different form of enslavement labeled as 'okay' because you're being given money that you have NO time to even spend on your needs, let alone meet those needs.

People would snap at some point and start throwing computers or whatever they work with...

I've had a couple of 70 hour weeks. Once had two back to back. Massive paycheck.

I'm remembering every single Charles Dickens novel I ever read.

Matchsticks, sulfur, orphans, and gruel.

And here I was just thinking about "The Jungle."
The part where they all had lice and were working in a meat packing plant...

Union workers are usually lazy **** stains. When we work in Philly, we are forced to have a crane operator run our hoist. Dangerous as all hell.

Jesus H...

I still prefer hourly though. Especially the way my company treats OT for salary employees.

Wait?

I know that I'm about to sound hebetudinous, but aren't all jobs hourly?

I’ve never done 100 hours, but I’ve done 70-80 hrs. I’m salary too. Work until you get it done. I feel the need to push as hard as I can so that I can move up in my company.

Oh and Papi, there are hourly jobs, which usually pay overtime, and salary jobs, which pays a set-usually higher than hourly- rate with no overtime.

Yeah, hourly (however much per hour) and salary (a fixed amount, i.e. if you made $50k a year no matter how many hours you put in). And lets not forget commission in sales, where they may be paid a lower rate than minimum, but if they make a big sale they may take home a nice chuck of cash for that day (in the next paycheck of course), or they may spend all day and earn next to nothing if no good sales made.

And it is the case now too that even salaried positions are having people use a timeclock to punch in/out, and log their hours electronically. They're moving away from a system where you show up "around" a certain time and leave "around" eight hours later, they want to clock it down to the minute (or nearest fifteen minute-interval, if you're a government worker).

They don't give you comp time either?

No, I do get comp time. It's supposed to be "preapproved" by nobody ever pays attention to that. All in all it's not the worst set-up I guess.

If there isn't even overtime, what is their point in keeping tabs on it? (edit: Or is it making sure some are actually there that might slacked off in the past?)

Makes the company I work for seem a bit counter intuitive now, after recently hearing that my former lead who moved up to a regular manager position a while ago (and changed stores in the process) isn't salaried as they'd always previously had been. And I think as a manager can receive overtime, unlike is lower peons.

Yes, they want to make sure employees actually work 40 hrs a week and if you work over then you earn comp time, which isn't like overtime pay but it's like earning paid time off

I actually did something like this for a couple of months when I worked for Papa John's. was working 12-14hr split-shifts every day for over two months straight with no days off. I'd come in for the early morning school lunch cafeteria orders (we made pizzas for the middle and high schools, and a Catholic school as well- about 120 pizzas in all each school day) and stay for about four hours, then come back to work the evening shift for another 8-10. It was hell....

I've done it a few times. I felt like driving off a bridge after the second week. Crunch time sucks.
