Yeah Peter Laird really pushed for the ending to be the same as the comic version even though it took too much time so they decided to do it specially for the DVD release.

Cool find. I?ve heard of this ending before, but didn?t get to watch it until now.

I liked the second alternate ending better.
There was also an alternation in Turtles in Space part 5 about those spacesuits with the features when Mikey said ?unfortunately there are only 3 of them?. When the episode reran 5 years later, they replaced the line with ?unfortunately, mine?s broken?. |

I never understood this. The only ending I ever remember seeing is the one with Raphael asking if Don got the water fixed.

When I used to watch this episode on my old DVD, I'm pretty sure this ending wasn't on there.
I'm currently going through this show again with my brother (we bought them digitally off of Amazon), and I'd never seen it before until my recent rewatch

Just checked both the digital episode that I purchased from amazon, as well as the VHS copy that I bought back in 2003. Both feature Raphael asking about the water. Apparently those few seconds got added on for home releases of the episode after it first aired? Or at least that's what I'm reading from doing a little google search.

This has been discussed before, but for those who don't know the original one that aired is the one without Raph. Peter Laird wasn't satisfied with it and had 4Kids animate a new ending that mirrored the comic, which ended up being costly, but worth it. The one with the new ending replaced the old one in re-runs, as I remember watching it during the Mutants Behind the Masks re-runs on the FoxBox in late 2003. There is even a thread on the forum talking about it.
Peter Laird's TMNT Blog has an amazing collection of email conversations with Lloyd Goldfine while the episodes were being produced. Apparently it cost $12,000 to redo the ending! Sunday, June 1, 2003 Spoiler:

That's petty of Laird and awesome because of it, $12,000 so I can get my episode as I want it? DONE.
He was both great and awful for TMNT during that time, his restrictions made us mad but at the same brought us so much good. |

There was a video on YouTube of the original version of the episode. I don't know what their source was, but I noticed the difference after I bought up all the R1 DVD's.

Never knew it.
The italian version ALWAYS had the cut part, both DVD and TV.

From my memory, the original ending only aired on the episode's first airing. Afterwards the alternate ending was funded by Laird and played in all subsequent reruns and releases. I remember on the original airing, thinking it was weird that the Raph scene wasn't in the episode, since it followed the comic story pretty closely overall.

The R2 DVDs are missing the final scene, ending on the shot of Donnie looking depressed after reading the ?Life at best is bittersweet? note, then cutting to credits. I don?t remember seeing the episode air on TV, so I?m not sure if the scene was ever aired or not
EDIT: My disc with “The King” on it is in a completely different art style to the entire series releases (this disc is just plain white with the logo in black and white and the disc number, compared to a turtle shell design for the other 7 discs). It’s unlikely, but there may have been a second production of discs after the first with the changes
