Let's post clips of technology that is toally alien to kids these days

Well, these days technology is evolving at such an enormous pace that tech we took for granted when we were kids would be totally alien to modern day kids.

So let's post clips which show, have people talk about or sing about that kind of tech which makes a kid go "Wait, WHAT does it do?"

I'll start with a couple of songs.

Paul Simon "Kodachrome"
The sheer concept that one took pictures by exposing light to a special kind of film which involves no flash memory will have kids baffled.

Stan Ridgeway "Calling out to Carol"
Well the concept of a telephone hasn't changed and kids these days spend more time with a telephone in their hands than doing anything else. So this song should be easy for a kid to understand, until Ridgeway goes "a message from a wire going through a wall."

Bruce Springsteen "57 channels (And nothing's on)"
Play this song to a modern day kid and they'll say "57 channels, THAT FEW?" Not to mention the TV itself, flat screens take up much less space nowadays.

Cornershop "Brimful of Asha"
Show a modern day kid this music video and they will ask "What is that girl doing, what are those?" But the song is also about the UK radio station "45" which played Indian Bollywood music, the singers and bands are mentioned in the lyrics

Frank Black "Whatever happened to Pong?"
With video games having become as big a production as they have, who of us remember the day that two moving digital blocks shooting a tiny block in between them was something which could occupy a kid for hours...

I'm not going to post a billion clips but here is a channel good for this sort of thing and a particular highlight:

It's actually interesting to see various failed experiments. Also, failed experiments are probably better candidates than VHS or ROM cartridges, seeing how successful formats can still be found lying around somewhere due to their sheer abundance. They also tend to get some pop culture exposure in the modern era as well, even if kids have never seen an audio cassette in real life, chances are that they have seen Guardians of the Galaxy and Star-Lord's Walkman. On the other hand, I bet you didn't even know you could get movies on Vinyl, did you?

Bonus Points for "Brimful of Asha" reference. You're alright, You.

You can't put "humane" and that other thing in the same sentence, you monster.

Even if some folks deserve it. "Humane" it ain't.

I couldn't have said it any better. What's with that big chunk of our generation being so Grandpa-like?

I lost my youthful innocence at age 5, when the neighbor kid set my face on fire.

But that's me. I don't deign to speak for everyone.

Well, the majority of this forum is over 35 now, so it seems logical that many would reminisce about tech from days gone by.

Hmmm? Afaik the 45 refers to 45rpm, the standard speed for vinyl 7" singles.

Yes, which is why I added the word "ALSO"

Cornershop lead singer Tjinder Singh said in an interview about this song that the song's lyrics refer to both the 45 RPM singles AND a radio station called "45" which played Punjabi music and Bollywood music he basically grew up listening to.

The song also gave Asha Bhosle's career a boost.

Yeah, there's literally been multiple essays written on pretty much every line of the song and what it's about, for anyone interested in a little Google-Fu.

It's also quite the earworm; so I have to be kinda careful about when I listen to it, because sometimes it's ALL I'm gonna hear in my head for the rest of the day.

But as Cornershop songs go, it's also their most accessible, as their "regular" work is more... SPACEY...

Truth to be said, I enjoy their spacey songs very much.

It just blows my mind that THAT is the song that knocked "My Heart Will Go On" off the Number 1 position. You just can't predict this stuff!

It's a very good, very catchy song, it's just... wow, y'know? Pretty sure that's a Trivial Pursuit question, and also pretty sure nobody ever gets it right.

Gah, that was so good!

Anyway that clip reminded me a little much of THIS...

Prince wrote this song for Sheila E to record in 1985, the music video is from 2018 but is a very respectful salute to the eighties.

Prince in 1985 during the Purple Rain tour playing the very guitar you see in this video.
