Hurricane Dorian
I hope everybody who lives in Florida is making their preparations to protect them from the Hurricane Dorian's arrival. Stay safe and away from him. If you need to evacuate, get out.

Ditto. Stay safe. Hope it drops in strength before hitting the state.

Yup, we did, too. Although it was a storm that came in from the north, and it was brief, but beautiful. Thoroughly enjoyed that little thunderbumper!

I got to do something that I haven't been able to do in weeks. I got to enjoy a night that was actually tolerable for a nice change. Less humidity usually makes me a happy camper.
Otherwise, a majority of online blogs, Weather Channel, etc. are keeping an eye on Dorian.. as they should. Warm water makes a great amplifier for a hurricane, and people here still remember what Harvey did. |

And I guess add in Georgia and the Carolinas to those keeping an eye on it.
Not that we all on this side shouldn't...what, with that shifting northern curve, and god knows even the remnants of these things can still be trouble for others of us later. |

Tuesday morning landfall and heavy rains will effect Virginia and the Carolinas as late as Friday during the day. It has a slow moving track.

True, that's going to suck more if it stays slow. Fingers crossed that it only hugs the coast and moves to sea instead of coming too far in land. My sympathy however to whoever takes the brunt of it...unless it fools us and turns out sooner, that would be nice.
If VA gets it Friday then I guess our own weekend might be a washout... *sigh* Guess I'm glad I'd already decided to skip an event down state I've been wanting to go to. Don't know if there's anyone else here who's ever played any amount of Wizard 101, but I saw this posted elsewhere in relation to this hurricane... Spoiler:

My state of Virginia declared a state of emergency, but should not face anything more then an inch of rain which is after Michael torn up my area.

Yeah, you guys are part of this same region where the remnants of these things just love to come across on their way back out to the ocean, esp if they came in at the Gulf Coast. Definitely have had some flooding in my area in the past because of that.
If this one does hit land, I'm hoping that what's left of it will just continue on the same predicted path and keep heading away and not detour inland or northward. Been catching up with a friend in FL, concerned about her and her husband, but luckily they live far enough inland it shouldn't be any issue if their state will hopefully be largely spared as predicted. While FL has had its share of beatings over the years, it's a wonder it doesn't get hit more, sticking out like a sore thumb as it does, and sometimes pulls off these near misses. Too, too sad. At least it has weakened. If it wasn't for the fact that it's so destructive, it would almost be funny that it hurt itself by sitting there stationary for so long. (Supposedly causing the waters there to turn colder because it sucked up all the warmth.) But that would be awful to be dealing with it for that long while it just sits there. And so much for the resorts. |

Its the unpredictable nature of hurricanes. Florence was supposed to be a big threat, biggest for my area since Fran back in 1996, but it gave us what Dorian likely will between one to two inches of rain. Michael was to do as Florence ended up doing, but in the 90 minutes it was in the area it kept us out of school for seven work days. My point is, you never know until it hits what it will do.

Grateful my area is far enough out of the way to only be getting some of its far reaching clouds and a little misty rain. But it's rather weirdly quiet out today. The birds are pretty quiet, the cicadas are silent...maybe they can sense the local weather is connected to something a lot bigger out there. (edit: Though it's cooler out so maybe the cicadas just don't care for that either.) |
