Eh, that Oprah accusation has no proof. It's just his "feeling" - no substance, no fact to back it up. Bring that into court and he'll get destroyed easily.

Amusing how the Oprah accusation should be shot down because there's no proof

Anyway, speaking of Franco...

Just to be clear, because Papen just loves to not provide context for their links, the accusation is that Winfrey knew about Weinstein, according to Seal.

So...here's my question back at Seal:
Why didn't he do or say anything about Weinstein himself?
If he knew that she knew, then....he also knew.

Or did he?
I actually don't know, because I haven't heard/seen much of Seal since "Kiss From A Rose."

It's been joked about for over 10 years just watched the Torsdagsklubben (Thursday Club a Norwegian satire show that made fun of the current news) xmas song from 2008 where Giske is a horny pervert in the video, still topical

But now Ulf Isak Leirstein, a top member of the Fremskrittspartiet (The Progress Party) have been accused of sending hardcore porn to young male members of the junior version of the Party, one of them was a minor at the time. the creep is being really nonchalant about it and posted the most phoned in apology and says he's going for a "time-out". Sadly I doubt he'll face any legal reprecussion since the case is too old.

I see no problem with Franco's approach as long as it's all consensual. Hell, i wouldn't mind having Scarjo think of me whenever she visits my state and drop in for a quickie.

IDK... didn't the girl want it? Didn't he ask the girl if she was single and she said she had a boyfriend but 'she's single when he's around'. Plus the story seems to say she was legal in the state of the New York, so she knew what she was doing.

Now here's what's confusing me since I'm no law major. Why do some states say the age of consent is 17 when the vast majority have it set to 18? Are the girls in New York more mentally mature than other states? And if James takes this girl to some other state, does he still get in trouble, or does he get a free pass because the girl is a New Yorker, born and raised?

Is the legal drinking age 21 in all states or are there also some wonky ones where they can drink at age 20 or whatever?

You have to understand the morality that surrounded the whole situation. Can a (then) thirty-five year old man date a (then) seventeen year old girl, and manage to not look make the whole thing look creepy and/or concerning? (For the record, he basically tried to coerce her into not only revealing her personal info, but also staying silent about said incident. She made it public, as the situation had made her uncomfortable. If it didn't, then maybe you would've had a point there.)

If not, then he shouldn't have been trying to get with her in the first place.

I don't know why. It just varies from state to state.

Are you deliberately trying to make your posts hard to read? 'Cause it's working. I'm not even bothering to try. If you're going to use alternate colors at least pick bright ones.

And use fonts that we can actually read.
Or you know...just don't use any fancy fonts and justifications at all. Just because it's there, it doesn't mean you should use them.

The Aziz incident was consensual, basically he didn't get her non-verbal hints. It's just a case of misunderstanding but not assault. His text response to her the next day says it all. "Clearly I misread things in the moment and I'm truly sorry." Who has ever been on a date and thought she was into it, but found out later she wasn't, and left completely surprised? I know I have. This is getting ridiculous.

Reminds me of this.
Basically women say about this story that man was obligated to "read signs" and men say that woman was obligated to tell him, instead of playing mute fish.

This is the case where both sides are right - if something wrong you should tell about it, not feeling shy or awkward post-factum.

The major problem I have had during the outrages is that after a while, it's hard to fully take some of these stories seriously. I will not deny that some of these people, such as Weinstein and Spacey, are sick and such. However, then you have someone who provides a strong account of defense, such as Michael Douglas. Ultimately, it just becomes more and more like a modern day version of the Salem Witch trials; only difference is that instead of death, it's prison or blacklisting.

Of course, many of these accounts are unfortunate, but for some to be coincidentally timed? It arises my suspicions nonetheless with some trying to 15 minutes of fame in the news for a quick buck while others really are serious. Either way, if the later is true in some cases, it leads to overexposure and can destroy credibility.

That's just my two cents on the whole matter. I feel bad for all the victims, but at the same time, depending on story, the "perpetrator" too, even if the later is more rare.

In a perfect world all parties would feel comfortable and open about their wants and desires, but we don't live in a perfect world where all parties do.

The assumption that we live in that world omits very important cultural cues and expectations.

Margaret Atwood has a great quote about this:
Men are afraid that women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will kill them.

And in several cases women saying No have resulted in their being bodily harmed.

Here's the thing about consent:
If you don't get affirmative consent, you should assume the answer is no.
And if you're unsure if you're getting non-verbal consent, the onus is on you to ask for it, otherwise assume it is no.

I need to read more about the allegations against Ansari, but if he was making moves that she didn't consent to before the fact, then yeah...he's in the wrong. Consenting to one sex act isn't the same thing as consenting to all sex acts.

I've been actively avoiding this thread for a long time, but its reached an unbelievable peak. The amount of accussations staggering and just go on to show how the media prizes publicity and coverage over integrity. Accusations are rampant, and each individual case must be formally investigated before making a decision because lives are at stake. The mere accusation is enough to destroy the entire career of an accused even if he didn't commit the crime. Even the accuser isn"t really in a good position when there is so much media coverage everywhere. I really, really loath the publicity that surrounds every freaking scandal that has been posted here, finding it dishonourable towards both potentially real rape victims and potentially innocent people who are falsely accused. Don't get me wrong, I do believe that accussations should be taken seriously and the matter should be fully investigated by the appropriate authorities, but sweet applepies, can we not dramatize every single accusation?

I kind of feel like we should set a deadline. Make it anything, make it next Wednesday. Make a big announcement, "OK, OK, listen, everyone... you have until WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24th to get your sexual assault/harassment/general bad person allegations announced. We will not be accepting any more allegations after this point so please get them in by the deadline!" And then we can sort of start putting this behind us.

After that, maybe it could be like a Purge Night, as a compromise? Like, one day a year, or once every five years be like, "OK, for one week, we are now accepting your unsubstantiated allegations about people. Get them in before the deadline!"
