Yeah, for some reason that's my bet, as well. For one thing, it's "unexpected", so there's that.

I thought it would be the best narrative to learn it on the last page of issue five. However, Kevin and Tom know what they are doing.

One review also said we don't learn in the first issue. Weird.

I expect us to know by the first issue, but I wouldn't blame them for holding off until further issues, if the story allowed it. I mean, have you seen how much discussion it has stirred up? "Who is the Last Ronin?" is essentially the tagline for this series. It would probably be beneficial to keep that mystery going, but a great first issue should keep interest high either way if the world makes any sense.

Apparently, shops are facing shortages with the book due to high demand and other difficulties, so anyone interested should be on the ball about getting an issue. Of course, you can always purchase it digitally.

Ignore me. I completely misread the review. I went back and checked after Aqua's post.

I almost picked the first issue up but at $8.99 for a single that's a bit more than I wanna pay for comics. will wait for the graphic novel to come out

It's double sized page wise and oversized, hence the double normal comic price.

I actually wouldn't mind if we never found out who the last standing turtles was.

As for the shortages - I read somewhere that even those who pre-ordered may not be guaranteed a copy and I imagine comic stores are unlikely to have any left over to put on the shelves if they do any sort of standing-order service. Bit of a bloody shame.

Well I guess I'll have to stay away from the internet tomorrow until I get my copy... and I dunno when I'll receive it. I know it's only TMNT, but something like "the big reveal of who his the Ronin" might be all over the internet. The fifth Female Turtle was, so...
I know you guys wouldnt do such a thing (with the spoiler tag and all that), but I dont trust the medias and youtube.

Maybe we can establish a pact to put everything in this thread in spoiler tags through Friday to allow 3 days to read the first issue. Of course we need to stay clear of CBR and similar sites. Of course it is best to not click on this very thread, but there are those who like non-spoiler reviews or opinions before reading it like movie reviews.

Just make a new thread when it's out, & nobody avoiding spoilers should enter it.

I really enjoyed the first issue. It reminded me a lot of what I loved about early Mirage TMNT, and what I've been missing in IDW TMNT. For one thing, the plot is very straightforward and focused with an emphasis on dynamic action. But more importantly, it has grit. It's violent, it's dirty, it's dark. It has that indie comic grunginess that Eastman and Laird's original run had.

The Escorza inks on Eastman's layouts give his art brand new life. This is the best Eastman has looked in a long time. And Waltz's dialogue is uncharacteristically understated here. He really lets the art do the heavy lifting which is just wonderful.

Since this story is based on a treatment drafted by Eastman and Laird back in the day I was under the assumption that this would be rooted in Mirage continuity, but there are already plot elements that wouldn't fit that interpretation (Karai is Shredder's daughter, the multi-color bandannas), but that doesn't bother me at all.

There isn't a heck of a lot of plot in the first issue, but the way it ends implies that some exposition to set up the world a bit more is forthcoming. I'm really looking forward to seeing more.

Well said, Wentos. I share your feelings regarding the grunge, grit, and overall tone that is reminiscent of Mirage. The dialogue being concise is something I appreciated as well. Felt like Kevin may have had a hand there, because the character felt very in tune with the Mirage TMNT, but who knows.

The whole team knocked it out of the park though. Tom and Kevin seem to work wonderfully together, the layouts are classic Kevin Eastman and carry a stylish sense of momentum, and the colors know when to hum and when to pop to great effect. I just love the visual influence you see from Dark Knight Returns, as well. From the earthy tones to the weathered, wrinkled skin of our turtle.
This is easily the coolest TMNT comic produced by IDW already, if you ask me. It just has that classic Mirage flavor that I love. It feels like Kevin Eastman's TMNT running at peak performance. Off to a great start.
