Was he ever actually in a relationship with either Betty or Veronica? It always felt like he could never choose and alternate realities aside, I don't recall him ever having one as a legit girlfriend, even if for a while.

Can't say much about the classic stuff, I'm still sort of making my way through them (and I read Life With Archie where he was married to both, and the anniversary issues where he had happy endings with boths)

In the modern reboot, Archie's been involved with them. Betty was his childhood love and first girlfriend but they broke up when Betty started being less of a tomboy around him and Archie didn't know how to deal with her changing. He dated Veronica after that for the majority of Mark Waid's run but he broke up with her after Betty was nearly killed in a road accident and he fell in love with her again, but Betty rejected him once she found out how he had went about dumping Veronica, Archie patched up with both of them after the prom was hijacked by a gunman. Betty was finally willing to come back to him when they reunited, but by this point Archie was involved with Sabrina.
