I don't think so. I don't need a hard back and front that's just going to take up more real estate on the bookshelf unnecessarily and cost $15 more than it needs to.

Yeah, as much as I love the Ultimate Collections hardcovers, they really do take up so much space on a shelf.

An acceptable trade-off for original black and white.

Personally, I just can't stand paperbacks due to the ease at which they bend, fold, and generally look like crap. And I do take care of my books, but these things are unavoidable in the long run. |

So I own a trade of Soul's Winter. Is that not part of Volume 1? |

It is, but it's "Guest Era" Volume 1, aka non-canon to the main storylines of Volume 1.

Or, wait, are the Classics editions the canon stuff that AREN'T the main storyline? Man, so many reprints... I'm confusing myself now.

The classics feature a lot of canon issues, the Ultimate collections were strictly for the issues Peter/Kevin specifically had a role in. A lot of Mirage staff issues like Michael Dooney's issues, etc. are in classics. Not just non-canon issues

At the end of the day I just want to own all Mirage Volume 1 stuff in one place. It's complicated what stories I have collected and which I don't. |

no.
issue #22-#47 were stories done by guest writer/artists that MOSTLY didn't take place within the Mirage Eastman/Laird continuity. there are just a handful of stories that are canon, or could actually fit within the Mirage time-line. some of this also has to do with work-for-hire contracts. here's an example of some of what you can expect from the Mirage 'Guest Era'. Spoiler:

Most of the guest issues were written to take place in canon, outside of the wacky parody stuff like Mark Martin's or those Mcweeny comics. Or stuff that was blatantly an alternate universe/take on TMNT like the "Souls Winter" trilogy.
All the other guest issues fit in fine with Mirage, they were written as part of the same world even if Pete didn't acknowledge the events in them. Which didn't matter because they're all essentially self contained stories. |

there were some really good stories in the guest era
issues 29 & 43 drawn by AC Farley issue 33 drawn by Richard Corben ^ this was the first time the Turtles traveled through time as far as i know. i also really enjoyed issue 37 by Rick McCollum & Bill Anderson that's one of my favorite aspects about Mirage vol. 1

So I noticed this topic started in 2014 or so and suddenly came back to life and started talking about drunk turtles and the volume 1 guest era.
Is this Urban Legends thing still happening or not?
