DUDE, now that I think about it, this reminds me of when the Mad Balls characters had bodies and you can pop off their heads (which were basically the regular Mad Balls). In fact taking a closer look, I wouldn't be surprised if Krang's rejected body sculpt was turned into Slobulus' body and they continued the toyline from there.

And the Madballs Head Popping Action Figures were not moving fast from shelves like Thundercats, Transformers, G.I. Joes, or even Storytelling ALF dolls. Koosh balls, JENGA, Pogo Bal, and the first Nintendo were all outselling action figures in 1987. Times were changing at the beginning of the late 80s.
