All Female Lord Of The Flies reboot is coming

Scott McGehee & David Siegel have made a deal at Warner Bros to write and direct a new version of Lord Of The Flies, based on the iconic William Golding novel. They plan to be faithful to the novel with one major twist: the young students stranded on a remote island who descend into a savage social order will be girls.

It is an intriguing take on a novel that was most famously turned into a 1963 film by Peter Brook. It was later turned into a 1990 Castle Rock film by director Harry Hook, which is how Warner Bros wound up with some of the rights. McGehee & Siegel last directed the 2012 drama What Maisie Knew, and before that Bee Season and The Deep End. They are very good at depicting traumatic events and stories seen through youthful eyes. They told Deadline they are big fans of Brook’s original film, but thought a new contemporized version felt timely. It took awhile for Warner Bros and their ICM Partners reps to work out the rights issues with the author’s estate. That just happened, and they have just closed their deals and will begin writing immediately.

“We want to do a very faithful but contemporized adaptation of the book, but our idea was to do it with all girls rather than boys,” Siegel told Deadline. “It is a timeless story that is especially relevant today, with the interpersonal conflicts and bullying, and the idea of children forming a society and replicating the behavior they saw in grownups before they were marooned.”

McGehee said the subject matter “is aggressively suspenseful, and taking the opportunity to tell it in a way it hasn’t been told before, with girls rather than boys, is that it shifts things in a way that might help people see the story anew. It breaks away from some of the conventions, the ways we think of boys and aggression. People still talk about the movie and the book from the standpoint of pure storytelling,” he said. “It is a great adventure story, real entertainment, but it has a lot of meaning embedded in it as well. We’ve gotten to think about this awhile as the rights were worked out, and we’re super eager to put pen to paper.”

They are repped by ICM Partners and Nelson Davis.

What is with the current trend being remaking movies with girls in it instead of guys?

Whats up with WB making reboots with all female cast?
Hopefully this won't turn out like the Female GhostBuster movie
Really glad to hear that they will stay faithful to the book. It will be interesting to see how different the characters will be as female compared to the male versions.

I feel bad for hardcore fans, bc I know how upset I get when the franchises I love make drastic changes like this.

On one hand, I get a little tired of girls just getting remakes instead of good original stuff... (Why can't we have stuff that is so awesome that the guys what a remake of female cast stuff rebooted with guys? Come on.) On the other hand, with this one, I wonder how quickly we'll hear the crying about it, over something most of them (the cryers) won't have seen, read, or given a single crap about since middle school. lol

If it's a made for tv thing I might check it out.

How many hardcore fans could there really be? Most people who've read the book had it forced on them in Jr. High.

Yeah, and the movie is kind of a bummer. It's good and all, one of those movies that stick with one, but it's not exactly a pleasant watch. I certainly wouldn't wanna sit through it again, different or no.

^ This. Book is decent, but I'm definitely in no hurry to read it again.

As for the movie, odd direction to go in but whatever. Doubt I'll see it.

I'm probably one of the few who enjoyed reading it in middle school. But then I was in a gifted program for English lit and we did some really cool projects relating to it. This could be interesting if done right. I agree that it would need a bit of retooling for current audiences and updates to the story and characters to work but I think as students of an all girls school it could very well prove enlightening regarding how girls behave when left alone.

I went to a student production of Lord of the Flies starring guys who couldn't act out of a wet sack. I'm certain a female based show could be interesting should it follow Lord of the Flies and place its own twist on the story, hopefully. Wishful thinking of the latter, but I can hope.

Also, do you seriously have a problem with everything relating to SJW or this kind of stuff? All I see from you at times in this section is whining about them or fangirls from Tumblr ruining Arrow and other shows or films, Ghostbusters being one. I highly doubt it's going to end up like the Ghostbusters 2016 fiasco either way.

Come on Warner Bros., pull through.

I wish them luck.
This isn't a movie I've any interest in seeing.
Especially if it's going to be faithful to the book.

What's wrong with the book? Everything should deserve the chance at a perfect adaptation of their source material

No I don't have a problem with everything SJW related like Vegita-San does. I have been pretty Vocal about my dislike for the new Batman Harley movie because of how it portrays women. I know a few SJW's don't like that movie either I was making an observation that the latest trend is redoing movies with women instead of men in the roles.

You can't have something faithful to the book and change the gender of all the characters, that's an oxymoron. I don't think this is any SJW pandering they likely just want to try something new with the story which is fine and frankly more interesting but don't cal it faithful.

Good book but not a feel good book, never seen any of the films.
