1 Million New STD Infections Worldwide... Daily

Quote:
More than 1 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases pop up across the world every day, a figure that shows health officials have made little progress in curbing infections over the course of about five years.

“We’re seeing a concerning lack of progress in stopping the spread of sexually transmitted infections worldwide,” Dr. Peter Salama, the World Health Organization executive director for universal health coverage and life course, said in a statement. “This is a wake-up call for a concerted effort to ensure everyone, everywhere can access the services they need to prevent and treat these debilitating diseases.”

A study published online Thursday by the Bulletin of the World Health Organization found that 376 million new cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and syphilis developed among people between the ages of 15-49 in 2016. Some of the cases may be multiple infections at the same time or re-infections among the same people. The infections are curable with medicines, but people don't become immune after being treated.

The rates, which are unchanged from the last data reported roughly five years earlier, are drawing the attention of global health officials because if the illnesses aren't treated, they can have serious consequences, leading to infertility, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy, heart disease, and neurological conditions. Babies infected in the womb can develop birth defects, pneumonia, and blindness.

Because the infections can cause people to develop lesions in their genitals, they increase the risk of developing HIV, the sexually transmitted infection that causes AIDS, and that was not assessed as part of the study.

In many cases, however, people don't have any symptoms and don't know they are infected, and so they still risk infecting others.

Syphilis, which can be transmitted during pregnancy and childbirth, caused 200,000 stillbirths and newborn deaths in 2016. A shortage in the global supply of the medicine that treats it, called benzathine penicillin, has made it more difficult for healthcare workers to respond to outbreaks. Officials are also concerned about strains of gonorrhea that have become resistant to antibiotics, which would make the disease impossible to treat.

So 7,000 days until everyone on Earth is infected. About 20 years.

The above article did mention some of the cases are multiple infections at the same time, and re-infections among the same people, but didn't provide the percentages of those situations within the 1 million new cases. Probably the most concerning is the growing antibiotic/antiviral resistance, which would make the medicines eventually ineffective against those STDs.

On one hand the article is surprising, and on the other it isn't too surprising, when take for example in New York City, where 1 in 4 had herpes back in 2008.

Cold sores are a type of herpes. Which would check out with the 1-in-4 rates in New York. Cold sores are an extremely common strain and also really easy to transmit.

Oh, that shouldn't count. I don't know anybody here in WA that hasn't had cold sores at some point.

Yeah, but that's FAKE herpes. Someone says "herpes," you're going to think Freddy Krueger crotch, not a damn cold sore.

Well, that’s your own bias and misconception. Herpes is herpes

Like, someone with cold sore herpes can give someone gentian herpes through oral sex, and herpes don’t need to be infected through intercourse, just skin-to-skin will do

I remember reading on the news a couple of year ago that doctors and health professionals were concerned that more and more young people nowadays are disregarding condoms because people are less and less afraid of HIV/AIDS, since it's no longer a death sentence in a matter of months after the diagnosis. Apparently a lot of people forget that HIV isn't the only STD that exists. Granted Hep B has like a 99% effective prevention vacine against it(it's compulsory here in Portugal. I got it), but then there's the rest. Afaik there's no vacine against syphilis yet, and that's not an STD I'd want to risk getting. I guess a lot of younger folk forget that it still exists...

No, HSV 1 cannot become HSV 2. That's not a thing.

HSV-1 can cause genital herpes.

It is a thing.

If you want to argue about it, maybe you should read a little first.

Maaaybe you can spread a cold sore to a crotch or something (though I've never heard of anyone doing that, ever), but that doesn't suddenly morph it into HSV-2.

When someone puts on their dating profile, "I have herpes," or it is the third date and they look down and say, "There's something I should probably tell you," 100% they are NOT talking about HSV-1. That's not a real thing. Nobody does that, not here in the states.

Never said it'd turn into HSV-2, but HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes.

This isn't rocket science, Andrew. HSV-2 is a STD that can cause sores and blisters down there, but not all genital herpes is caused by HSV-2.

Well, more and more young people nowadays are not having sex or dating. That or they're getting late in the game. So perhaps STD infections will go down 20-30 years from now on.

Also, a thread about STDs. Nice. What subject is there left to talk about here?

I'm just surprised nobody has accused somebody's mother of being the root cause.

Apparently we're all gentlemen here. Well, except for CK. You're a lady.
