Warner Bros. Confirms Standalone DC Movies Outside of DCEU Continuity
A month ago, you could practically hear the collective necks of the internet snap in one direction as it was revealed Warner Bros. was developing a Joker movie from The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips, a solo movie that would not be in continuity with the other DCEU films like Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman, and Justice League. Confusion continued to linger as the tight-lipped studio wouldn’t reveal too much about the project, but now speaking with Vulture we know that the plans for the “DCEU” are changing at Warners.
“Our intention, certainly, moving forward is using the continuity to help make sure nothing is diverging in a way that doesn’t make sense, but there’s no insistence upon an overall story line or interconnectivity in that universe,” DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson tells the outlet about their plans moving forward. This summer’s Wonder Woman was the first example of such, a solo film that briefly hinted at the larger DCEU but wasn’t so entrenched that it became a hindrance on the film. It went on to become the highest-grossing movie in the DCEU and one of the highest-grossing Warner Bros. movies of all time. The studio plans on taking a similar approach with the upcoming Aquaman as well. “Some of the movies do connect the characters together, like Justice League. But, like with Aquaman our goal is not to connect Aquaman to every movie,” chief creative officer Geoff Johns said. The pair confirmed that the standalone films like The Joker one are very much part of their plan moving forward, and they would be under their very own film label, which will be officially announced to the world “soon-ish.” Read more at http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/new...ceu-continuity

Feels like more damage control. Whatever, WB.

"Blah blah blah we literally have no idea what we're doing, but this is kind of what we were thinking to do right now: blah blah blah."

The only way for WB/DC to earn back any faith is to do one thing, repeat, ONE THING: Make good movies. Not talk about what movies they're going to make, or tell us how they're connected, or tell us why they're not connected, or tell us how they've learned from their mistakes. JUST MAKE GOOD MOVIES. But no, we've only got Justice League (with a lot of baggage), Aquaman, and Wonder Woman 2 that we can rest assured are happening. The rest is a lot of hypothetical and hot air.

I still have faith in Aquaman. James Wan's pretty amazing. Probably the best big time horror director working today.

WB/DC: "Just what til we show what we've got coming in 2 to 3 years, it's going to be great, we promise!"

And they're acting like when they "unveil" their new Elseworlds movie line (that includes the Joker origins movie nobody wants) people are going to erupt into cheers and give a crap.
They won't. They don't.

Justice League... well, that one could be anywhere from "underwhelming/terrible" to "better than I expected/not bad" to "fantastic/the haters were wrong!" Who knows. It's just a big oozing ball of cinematic controversy.

I don't know about you, but having Elseworlds movies are a good thing to me.
I mean, aside from Wonder Woman, I have so, so many irreparable issues with the DCEU that having something take place outside of that universe is the only way I can go in without having baggage. Basically, there's no way of redeeming/fixing Superman in that universe to me, so if these movies are a way to get the Superman I actually want to see, then I'm on board. |

Plus, these are ways we can get stories that you can't really tell within an ongoing universe.
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, All-Star Superman, Red Son... |

Or, if you want to go hardcore, recast. But that's all you gotta do; no need to go all "Red Son" or Elseworlds... that's going nuclear over a local insurgency, mate!

Best case scenario is the director ignores everything that came before it and plays it straight. Even then, I don't see it making sense. Superman is far from being a beacon of hope in that universe so I already can't buy into everyone treating him as such. |

holy ****ing sh-t is WB beyond retarded in handling DC, the reason the DC cinematic universe isn't what it should be is because anytime anything they do doesn't get automatic praise DC stands still and is unsure what to do and starts scrapping every f-cking decision they've had.
They clearly wanted a cinematic universe since Green Lantern but they keep rebooting and changing their plans and now we have the mess that we have. f-ck it. I've actually enjoyed most of their offerings but by resetting their plans over and over I frankly stopped caring. |

When WB/WC begins putting out pound-for-pound consistently decent movies in their DCEU, year in, year out for 4, 5 years:
That's when they can start thinking about their "Elseworlds" movie line. Not before.

But it's totally their M.O. to jump the gun and try and take shortcuts, just like the way they introduced Batman and Wonder Woman in a Superman movie sequel, and then are doubling down and introducing Aquaman, Cyborg, The Flash, possibly Green Lantern, and a whole slew of secondary characters in what they are touting as an ensemble film but is still really just a Superman sequel.

I'm all for this. Just make good movies about good heroes, forget cinematic universes. The animated features work well in that regard, why wouldn't live action movies?

Because those are vastly, entirely different things with immensely different markets and payouts.

No, it's more of a anytime something of theirs isn't a huge success or gets praised by the media they immediately pull back on everything planned even if it wasn't necessarily bad and instead of improving the foundations they already had they begin again and mess up again and back to point one never allowing them to really see the fruition of what they do.
