The Original Artwork Cardboard after 1992 and the custom cardboard hope for figures
The Original Artwork Cardboard after 1992 and the custom cardboard hope for some figures.
Hello Dear Tmnt Lovers, Thank you so much for your comments in all my previous threads Some may agree that the cardboard artwork of the original Tmnt toyline from 1988 till 1992 inclusive will never be matched. (Sorry 2003 Series, Nick or Next Mutation) and might have been one of the strongest reasons why we were enticed to buy Tmnt back them. Unfortunately, nothing good last forever. The awesome artwork cardboard with the exploding brick wall and the two or three illustrations of the figure (plus the illustration cameos which I have covered in this thread http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=45484 that came inside meet its end in 1992 and we went from this: To this The final figures from 1992 and 1993 saw the dawn of a new artwork cardboard era, featuring our four green heroes as you can see above. During this year most of the figures (new or reissue) would be packaged using the same cardboard artwork (sometimes it will included a pamphlet packaged with the figure) and the exploding brick wall would never be seen again. Moreover, this new artwork would last only a year, cause in the same year 1993 would be changed again and it will feature the four turtles in the sewer. This new “slighty” improved artwork in the cardboard would reign in most of the designs (with some exceptions) till the end of the toyline. During those years extrabonus would be added to the figures (like collectors cards and coins), but I will not enter in that cause the evolotion of the packge was covered in a marvelous way by our fellow dromer Vaughn Michael here http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=24936 The problem was the consequences of the cardboard artwork change and the main one in my humble opinion was that we were left without the possibility of seeing that awesome artwork cardboard with the exploding brick wall and the two or three illustrations of the figure plus the cameos for many figures but I specially regret the following ones: 1992 Halfcourt 1992 Monalisa 1992 Sandstorm 1993 Hot Spot 1993 Super Don 1993 Super Mike 1993 Mighty Bebop 1993 Rhinoman In a Time where the tmnt mania was decreasing, I think the original artwork was needed even more, can you imagine what would happen if Sandstorm and the rest I´ve mentioned retained the original cardboard? Perhaps it might have been easier to sell them. I don´t know, that´s my guess... I have seen many people in this website that have made outstanding customs and illustration jobs, that´s why I asked you (if you want and dare) to try to make a custom cardboard for the figures using the artwork cardboard with the exploding brick wall and the two or three illustrations of the figure. I think it shouldn´t too difficult to scan a cardboard package, the one thing that it´s a challenge it to make two or three illustrations of the figure. I wish I could do it but I am not a good drawer. What do you think? Can be do it? Any volunteers? Last edited by Bill; 04-17-2014 at 10:24 PM. |

I MIGHT be a little interested in helping. I had a blast doing the custom Nick artwork a few months back. What is your ultimate goal here? Just to see them or actually print and utilize?

I am glad you ask. I would be happy just to see them. If I could ever print them, that might be a dream come true. Thanks a lot.

the earlier cards art was definitely the best. i didn't care much for the second style with all four turtles close-ups. i've never even seen the third style, then again i was in high school and had no interest in toys at that particular time. i do like it quite a bit though. better than the second one that's for sure.

hey, I gotta say I LOVE your threads so far, buddy!there is nothing more exciting for me than the original feel and look of the toys cardboards...I live in germany and there as well as everywhere in europe that we went in those years for vacation(and mind you there was turtles maina EVERYWHERE!!!) there was lots to look and marvel at regarding these beautiful toy cardboards...the teenage mutant ninja turtles have always meant a whole LOT to me but I have to admit that I have never come across the second or third developement of the packages...at least I cannot remember ever seeing those someplace...probably for the better, huh?...so to me there have always only been these great images and the exploding brick wall and the cameos..
as for your question:I am fred flintstone on the computer, but a cartoonist, so the 2 to 3 illustrtaions of the characters would be no problem for me but scanning the cardboards in and rework them...meh... (alright scanning is really no biggie) |

The card backing art changing is pretty much what killed my interest in collecting them back in '92. I thought the new artwork was so generic and ugly compared to the uniqueness of the old artwork. I'd definitely be interested in seeing this happen.

I love how the slogan of the good guys says something about "few good mutants", but they outnumber villains like nobody's business.
Also, cool custom cards. I forgot that Scratch and Hotspot do exist. |
