So they had traveled quite a fair way. Though its interesting that a massive area of surviving vegetation was only 3 states away from the explosion epicentre. Aside from the moon exploding, that seems a pretty big indication that humanity likely survived outside the East Coast - and that Raph's conclusion that humanity was dead was based entirely on bad memory and immediate surroundings.
