How Donatello disappeared in SAINW

I'm not clear on how Donatello disappeared in the world of "Same as it never was". At first it seems like it's the result of Don being sent into the future, but the other characters imply they don't know how he disappeared or think he just left at some point, so that can't really be the case since they knew about Drako/UN. So is the implaction that Don was instead sent to an AU in which he did leave for unspecified reasons?

Good question. My guess is that it was suggesting that Donís disappearing from the present/reality was what made the others assume he left, though I could be way off.

I posted a theory about that some time ago. In the first "Back to the Sewers" episode, the Turtles wind up in a time period that's a couple of years past their present year. In this future the Turtles witness Utrom Shredder, Tengu Shredder, and an Unknown version of the Shredder later dubbed the cyber Shredder brawling with each other.

Then this unknown man (Khan) who is fighting alongside one of the Shredders see the turtles and says "The Turtles? Here? Impossible, I destroyed you myself."

This is what I believed happened to Donnie: Although defeated at the end of the series, Cyber Shredder isnít destroyed. Instead he lays low and regains his strength and power leaving the Turtles and their companions to assume he is gone for good.

While on his downtime he develops a means to free Utrom Shredder and resurrect Tengu Shredder so they can use their combined might to take down the Turtles. Together they devise a plan to create a trap for the Turtle Brothers. When the trap is laid, Khan lures the Turtles into it and assumes that the Turtles have been destroyed once it is set off. Unbeknownst to him, Leo, Raph, and Mikey manage to break free from the trap thanks to Donnieís ingenuity. But, Donnie himself is unable to get out in time.

The Turtles, their friends and allies all look for him around the trap but donít find him. After at least a couple weeks of searching, everyone comes to the sad truth that Donnie didnít make it out of the trap alive. Everyone except Mikey who refuses to accept their brother is dead and doggedly feels like they should keep searching. Leo and Raph have conflicting views about dealing with their youngest brother. Raph wants to lay things down straight and just flat out get Mikey to realize Donnie is gone and he is not coming back, while Leo wants Mikey to accept their brothers loss in his own way. Splinter, however, states they should keep quiet because believing their brother is alive is giving Mikey comfort and they have no right to take that away from him. He also cryptically starts saying that Donatello will return to them one day.

In the midst of this, Leo and Raphís attitude towards one another is beginning to sour but they still try to deal with life as usual even though it's not the same without the four of them. April begins the groundwork for starting OíNeil tech. She tells the Turtles and Splinter that Donatello should also be given a role as one of the founders since a lot of the pursuits followed by the company were because of him. Mikey gets upset and demands everyone quit talking about Donnie like heís dead before he storms off. Splinter tells April to forgive Michelangelo for his behavior he still has not accepted that his brother is gone. But if Donatello could be there with them right then, he would certainly say he was honored to be a founder of Aprilís company.

While the Turtles are supposedly dead the three Shredders fight one another for control of the world. As the battles wage the Turtles remain in hiding. Mikey is still sulky due to Donnie being gone, through everyday he seemingly becomes less hopeful of Donnieís survival. April gives birth to her first child, a son. OíNeil tech is also a success.

Eventually Utrom Shredder comes out as the victor of the wars between the three Shredders. Even though he has assumed power, Utrom Shredder is heavily damaged by the battles against the other two Shredders and needs to recover. Knowing this is their only chance the three Turtles, Casey, and Karai (who has become an ally of the Turtles) attempt a tactical strike against the Shredder to defeat him and the Foot Clan for good. Utrom Shredder is surprised to see the Turtles alive but still acts confident in his victory. At one point he gloats that he assumes their missing brother must be with their rat father.

Mikey angrily barks that Donatello abandoned them a long time ago. Shredder just laughs and says that even if that was the case, he would inevitably be hunted down and share their fate. The Turtles try to take on the Shredder, but he proves too difficult Casey is killed in the battle. The Turtles all report what happened to a distraught April. Leo then points out that it seems the Shredder doesnít know Donnie is dead and that is something they can use to their advantage. Mikey snaps and says that they donít know if Donnie was dead either, they just gave up on looking for him. Leo tries to reason with his younger brother and said as long as the Shredder assumes Donnie could be alive, he would see him as a threat and he will expend his forces to find him. Mikey refuses to see reason and yells that he would only believe their brother was gone when he can see his body for himself.

Donnie's vanishing is kept deliberately vague in the Same as it Never Was story. While Donnieís character isnít well developed in this incarnation, we do know him well enough to know he would never just up and leave his family for no reason. Even if he was taken or forced to leave, he would still try to find someway to reach his brothers and let them know why he needed to.

If Donnie had just up left without any explanation or contact, then he would have to explain himself to the buisness end of Leo and Raphís weapons on sight. Instead the reaction Raph and Leo have when they see him again after so many years they are surprised and glad to have him back. So that gives only one plausiblity...Donatello is dead in that future. I don't think Leo or Raph found his remains or anything. It's more like they just came to that conclusion on their own, and then just didnít tell Mikey that Donnie is deceased because they knew he wouldnít react well to it.

Then again in Good Genes, there is a moment where Mikey is treating Donnie's second mutation like he's sick in bed with a cold. So it could be plausible that Mikey may have just been in denial for years over his kind-hearted, genius older brother being gone prefering to believe Donnie abandoned them rather then the actual truth.

An Alt timeline where, when Draco-Ue sent them to different realities, Donatello never made it back to the present.

Are you stating that as your opinion or as fact?

It is probably the future on an alternte Earth, where Chrell won the turtles. Unlike in the ordinary timeline, where turtles defeat Chrell in Exodus, just a few episodes later.

I'm fine with this theory.
But Michelangelo (in the future) says that he "left them", and seems a voluntary action. But maybe Mike was just angry about it and said that instead of "disappeared".

About the Exodus thingie, Donatello and Leatherhead were divided from the other members of the team, so we can consider the fact that they may have failed the mission or got killed.
Shredder, in the Same as it Never Was, seems suprised about his "return" and so it probably means that none of the Foot Clan killed him.
Another thing is that Leatherhead doesn't seem to show during that episode, proving the fact that he too disappeared/died.
Also, Stockman and Hun are seen as "traitors" by Shredder, and the moment of the serie when he starts to doubt about their usage is just before the Exodus.

The easiest reason to Donatello's disappear could be that he and Leatherhead took too long to reach the silos and died from the explosion of the transfering chamber (order of Bishop).

Well maybe the journal they read in season 6 might of come true in some way or another and would also explain why the justice force is not there

Splinter and Cody admitted they made the whole journal up.

The Turtles are interested in reading the real journal written by April and Casey. Splinter warned them that they shouldn't read it because doing so would affect the future in which they found themselves. The way he put it is in creating that future they made certain choices, and if they read the journal then when they go back in time they will make different choices when the time comes for them to make said choices. And those different choices could possibly prevent that current future from being what it is.

Knowing the Turtles would be obsessed about reading it Splinter and Cody used the astro lathe to make a fabricated version of the journal.

Still, you do have some point. After all a lot of 2105 New York was influenced by O'Neil Tech. Donatello was one of the founders of O'Neil Tech and but much of the stuff they use in Cody's future is based on plans he had. That doesn't necessarily mean he was alive when April also made him a founder. Especially, since that appeared to be only inside knowledge, kept to a trusted few in the company such as Starlee.

Then again, April and Casey are Cody's great grandparents, which meant maybe their son was named after Donatello and Dunn just assumed the Donny who was the founder was Donny Jones, not Donatello Hamato. Otherwise, Dunn would have been monopolizing his resources to make sure that that third founder didn't have any living heirs.

Just a theory based on different world lines...

Theory #1
If you consider the 2003 series to be based on the Mirage Comic Continuity (Vol 1, 2, and 4)

Then I feel like Same as it Never Was probably draws a bit of inspiration from Vol 3 (The Image Years)... as the Turtles go through some rough times and spoiler alert - Donnie technically died (although was a cyborg).

Theory #2
I like the alternate timeline theory. For those that have seen/played Stein's Gate, based on the world line theory. There appears to be some timelines where "The Shredder Wins" (BETA Timeline) and where "Shredder Loses" - (ALPHA Timeline). The one major difference being the disappearance of Donatello. So basically if all 4 Turtles are not together and Shredder isn't defeated, the divergence from the Alpha Timelines increases until its a completely different outcome aka the Beta Timelines.

Basically as long as the Four Turtles are together - most timelines generally follow the Alpha Direction. However, because of "Time Shenigans", Donatello appearing in the SAINW alternatre future changed the overall course of the Timeline just enough to push back into to the ALPHA direction leading to the defeat of the Shredder. Basically, they wouldn't have won without Donatello.

Also if you consider all the times that the turtles have traveled in time, I am sure they have influenced the divergence factor
1) Against Savanti Romero
2) The entire Fast forward season
3) SAINW - considering how old April is - pretty sure Donatello is in an alternate future, not just an alternate dimension
4) Back to the sewers (prior to Shredder Wars)

And an interesting thought
Turtles Forever was also dimension hopping. So Shredder realized that the TMNT are a constant, and that Shredder always loses in the "ALPHA Timeline".
So if he destroys the original turtles "aka" Mirage before the first shredder is defeated, he would effectively be creating the BETA Timeline, which was prevented. Or basically saying shredder winning in the one shot would have f*cked the story of TMNT and nothing else would have never been made.
