Harsh vocals

How good is your tolerance for them? What's your limit?

There's different types of harsh vocals out there. They're not all the same.

Death metal growling is fine by me and doesn't sound particularly harsh. Nor do the vocals in viking and folk metal. I'm also fine with thrash metal with harsher vocals such as Kreator.

Black metal depends on the vocalist. Some have better sounding vocals than others. And the instruments also factor into my enjoyment of the music. Symphonic Black metal like Bal-Sagoth is perfectly fine by me. The singer doesn't just use harsh vocals.

Now, stuff like metalcore/hardcore such as Converge is not enjoyable to me at all.

First time I listened to death metal growling I didn't like them much and was kind of taken aback. But I quickly began to like them.

Some say harsh vocals are an acquired taste but I think some people will never like it, no matter how many times they hear them. They're a very divisive thing among music fans, I feel.
