Duuuuuuuuude I'm all about that red TF Shredder. Hothead is pretty cool too... though it wounds me that you used an Armadon for custom fodder. Considering that he was my favorite character in Primal Rage, that's one figure I wish I had.

ARMADOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!! !!!!!!

Well, it was already kind of broken and given to me for scrap purposes. As it is, this Hothead's tail is still incomplete

That Shredder is pure awesome. I might have to steal that idea to give my Shredder some proper legs.

It's the single "Everybody", from the Japanese dub of 2K3.

great job Ninj. it's amazing how painting the Mutations Shredder helmet really brings out the detail in it. what is the actual name of the colour you used for Shredders body, and what company made it ?

Thanks! Shredder's body is just a standard dark red from... well, I forget the company I'll have to look it up when I get home.

Your Tournament Fighters trio look okay, but their paint jobs are pretty "flat" (maybe you were going for a simple 8-bit look, in which case I can see you taking that approach). I think they'd pop a lot more with some dry brushing and/or a wash. The Shredder would make a pretty close Mirage/NECA version too.

Drybrushing? Wash? I don't even know what that means.

Its worded humorously. I mean I also don't know what any of that is.

Yeah, so since I don't know what a washing or drybrushing is, it's safe to say I've never done it before... on any of my customs. Nevertheless, here's one that's been sitting around for a while, and I just kept forgetting to photograph it:

Feudal Japan Utrom

This is the first exosuit that the Utroms made on Earth, as seen in the "Secret Origins" episodes. However, this exosuit was eventually stolen by a renegade Utrom named Ch'rell, and eventually served the basis for the first earthbound Shredder suit.

The Utrom was actually sculpted by a co-worker of mine, chigaakai. I painted it after he finished it for me. I'm still waiting on him to finish a Ch'rell sculpt as well.

Parts used:
Utrom (2004, Playmates) Exosuit, hoverdisc
Splinter (2003, Playmates) Robe
Hamato Yoshi (2005, Playmates) Hat
Utrom - custom sculpted by chigaakai and painted by Ninjinister

Drybrushing and washes are two of the most basic painting techniques that every customizer should know.

A wash refers to painting your figure with diluted, watery paint (something like the consistancy of milk)--the paint settles into the crevices/cracks of the sculpt, but not the protrusions (picture a muscular torso, the paint would highlight the crevices between the muscles). Generally you want to use a darker color than whatever it is you're painting when applying a wash.

Dry brushing accomplishes the opposite, highlighting the raised/bumpy areas of the figure while not getting any paint into the crevasses. You put a teensy amount of paint on the tip of your brush and lightly go over areas with it (using the muscular torso example again, you'd be highlighting the surface of the muscle areas, but not the crevices between them). For dry-brushing, you usually want to use a lighter color than what you're painting.

The feudal Utrom looks pretty cool!

Well that's some sound advice to me. I'd been reading the terms thrown around here before and had no idea what they meant. Not sure if I'll utilize them in the future, as the primary reason I make these figures are something for my own personal enjoyment, and as long as I'm happy with them, that's all that matters. I just thought it was weird that you suggested using those techniques just now when I've never done so in the past.

Thanks for the advice and Utrom complement!

Whoa! The TF trio Mutating Shredders legs on Shredders body was a good call there! He looks way more natural than the other 2 Shredders ever did! Like the red paint there too. I've been wanting to make a Casey custom for a while but I'd been holing off in hopes that NECA would finally do series 2 and possibly 3 that would include him, but it seems like wishful thinking now. Dig the Hothead repaint as well, I wish Playmates would have made them the correct colors to begin with!
