Which TMNT continuity do you feel is the best?
Which continuity of the tmnt do you fel is the best embodiement of all the turtles?
A few things i picked apart because of how they differed at times. to me, all 3 movies had a different take. the 87 toon changed after season one, then changed again with red sky. Vol 1 & 2 were pretty much the same (when in continuity) so they're together, but vol 4 has a different feel to me, so that's seperate. the new toon, though it has gotten boring with too many bishop episodes (a very generic villian in my eyes) it has been a consisitent feel. sorry if i missed any, but i only put in the major ones. I picked the first tmnt movie. to me, it had the right amount of action, humor, and i loved that donatello. i like my donny with a sharp sense of humor, and as a buddy to mike and his sillier sense of humor. leo was the spiritual chatracter, and the natural leader. Splinter, casey, and raphael were perfect, and even though i don't prefer april as a reporter, her occupation isn't going to overpower the rest of it.

Personally, i chose the Archie version of the TMNT. Maybe because I grew up with it, but I've always based my versions of the TMNT (on fan art and fics) off of a combination of 75% Archie, 20% Mirage and 5% movies. The archies atarted out silly and snarky and rather preachy until about issue 28 or there abouts, when they went to Japan for the first time. Then you got history lessons, mythology, action and utterly unique characters with backstories that launched a thousand fanauthors. The fact that the TMNT actually seemed to age as the series progressed, with the stories getting darker and darker, helped create the illusion that time actually -was- passing. I've read all the comics a million times and you can really see the character preogressiona nd evolution over the years.
pardon any typos or strange sentance structure, i'm a bit drunk :p

I picked the 2003 Cartoon Continuity because I love the sci-fi/action/ aspects of it. But I also love the Mirage volumes 1, 2, and 4 ones too.

I'm an Archie man myself, because I feel it has some of the best storys and some of the strongest continuity, that is after it leaves the OT vein and actually began telling it's own stories. Heck, they even explained the "Eye" of Sarnath. I like how they made Splinter more than someone to be captured and a definate force to be reconkoned with. It also introdused new characters and villians that stand the test of time. I for one can't wait for Mirage to publish the last story of the Archie series. I'm sure it'll be shella good!

TMNT I for me. It was a fantastic movie and I really enjoy how it blends elements from the old comics with some aspects of the '87 cartoon to create a totally distinct and enjoyable film. Splendid!

*Nods* That's kinda why I like Archie. It takes the the origins and tone of the 1st season of the TMNT and maintains it throughout it's entire run. The only things I might have as a gripe is that they stray from the OT in 2 ways: 1. They forget Baxter Stockman when they start ploting stories away from the OT. The Shrinking Turtles comic was the last OT adaptation and it's the last apperence of Stockman. 2. The TMNT's OT origin makes them teens essentially from day one, Archie make them kids. (To be honest I like the "How they got..." stories. I always liked how in all the other canons the Turtles were raised by Splinter, and not just his 4 teenage roommates.)

I chose the 2003 cartoon because of it's darkness and the faact that anything such as a character death could happen.

Aren't TMNT I, II, III and Next Mutation all in the same cotninuity?
Anyway, that's a tough one. I like different continuities for different reasons. I like Mirage for being the genesis of the TMNT, and for being the most hardcore version out there. I enjoy the 87 cartoon for it's gratuitous humor aspects; the thing never took itself seriously (until the last few seasons, anyway). But I think, if I had to choose just one, it would be the 2003 cartoon continuity. It's a perfect blend of the versions which came before it, maintaining some of the best qualities of each. It has its ups and downs, but so do all the other continuities. The Archie continuity is one I've wanted to get into, but my local shops only have back issues of the really early stuff that just adapts episodes of the TV series.

One thing I don't understand in TMNT NM, there's a line I seen alot here that has Shredder insult his Foot Ninja saying 'you said the turtle attacked you with a sword? and what did the rat hit you with? a flower?' What in the hell??? It makes it sound like Shredder never seen or heard of the TMNT and Splinter before, even though the series tries to make it sound like they been against each other for some time.
The Archie comics were cool. But I'm not 100% sure which continuity I like best. As for Baxter in the Archie comics, it was kinda/sorta explained in the Shark Trilogy. Apparently when Shredder and Baxter were getting away with the crystal, Armaggon appeared and took Shredder to the future with him. Baxter was left behind and taken to jail. Way to cover their asses, eh? |

Hrmmmmm...
My experience is pretty much limited to the 1987 toon, the 2003 toon, and movies one and two. Frankly, the second movie is OK if I remind myself it's a comedy, but it's not my favorite. The first movie is better, but I wish they hadn't made Donatello into Mikey II. I thought he was really out of character. On to the 1987 toon. I grew up with this thing and I love it. I just don't like the modified origin story (took me a while to finally make sense of why Yoshi didn't turn into a turtle-man, and it still barely holds). Also how the TMNT don't really read as a family. But it's got some great humor and a kickawesome theme song. But I think I'd have to pick the 2003 toon. We get the Turtles in a more serious format - some humor, but not a goofy colorful jokefest. They get character development, which is nice... and occasionally some really fantastic animation that is beautiful to watch. Splinter is the father figure and they view themselves as a family... which is probably one of my favorite dynamics of TMNT. I could do without a lot of the scifi, but it's consistently good (with the few embarrassments that plague all continuities). I guess the two things that would make me thoroughly happy is to 1) make some good, solid non-magical, non-mystical, non-scifi street fighting stories, and 2) if they had made Shredder human. But really, they even fit that into the storyline well enough for me to accept how it is in this show. I think I might enjoy Mirage a lot, but sadly I still have very little exposure. Which must be remedied. |

I voted for mirage vol.1 and 2, although I have not had much exposure to vol.2. Hows it compare to volume 1? Mirage would be followed by TMNT movie 1. TMNT
2k3 has so much potential, but there is not enough mature episodes for it to be my favorite. I would enjoy it so much more if most episodes were closer to Shredder Strikes Back or SAINW( which would sooo much cooler for the fast forward story line) ...and of course the original tmnt toon will always be a classic. |

the movies are all in the same continuity, but i broke them up becuz each portrayed the turtles in different ways, tmnt 2 was more childish, and tmnt 3 was pretty poorly written,
the 87 toon is all one continuity, but the "feel" changed a couple of times. same with vol. 4. same continutiy, and i do love vol 4, but it's different enuf from vol 1 to seperate it so, i boke them up.

Although I do like the first two movies and the old school toon, I have to say the New toon is the best portrayal of the turtles in my opinion. Mirage is pretty close, but I've only read a handful of comics, the same with Archie and Image. The '03 toon has humor continuity, and pretty good stories many of which are inspired by the Mirage series. The old school toon seemed as if they were more like roomates wheras in the newer toon the Turtles and Splinter are handled more as a family. The only thing that really bugged me about the newer show is that Shredder wasn't human. Well that and fast forward...but I've babbled enough. LATER
