Super Mario World Beta

Soooo....this is worth its own thread. Here's some screenshots of the beta version of Super Mario World from........1989! If you remember, Miyamoto claimed many times that Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World were in development at the same time, and thus share many elements. It was also said that Super Mario World was in development for two years. The SNES hardware was not finalized until under a year before launch in Japan.

Well, apprently Nintendo intended to keep the NES alive much longer than we even thought. Good thing Sega kicked their lazy asses into gear. As you'll see, Twilight Princess isn't the first launch title to begin its life on a dying console, then get ported up to usher in a new machine. Take a look....

You'll notice how the Super Mario Advance 2 title screen resembles this...

What in the flying fu*k? Look at Mario's ass, then look at the item reserve box.....yeah.

This isn't that pirate Famicom SMW rom that came out around 1994. This is the original Super Mario World beta that was built on the NES using the graphics accelerator chip in SMB3, then ported up, tweaked, heavily altered, then layered with some basic Mode 7 effects to show off the console. Even with these shots though, most of the basic elements were there.

Isn't stuff like this creepy?

Thanks for sharing, and yes this could be considered creepy. What else is Nintendo hiding from us?

Seeing that Raccoon tail and the leaf power up kinda makes me sad. Yeah, Mario looked cool with the cape, but Leaf+Tail = Instant Win! I wish they had kept it. It's kinda sad we haven't seen some variation of that power-up in any game since SMB3. Let's hope NSMB2 goes that route!

More than you know. Did you know that Super Mario 64 began life as a Super NES game running on the FX2 chip, before it was moved up? Here's hoping those surface some day like these. I got another goodie coming up in a little bit.

Question though, is it actually out there for download? No I'm not asking for a link, I just want to know if it exists or were these pics just found somewhere or something.

Wow. That Koji Kondo managed to pull that music off on the NES is stunning. Amazing talent.

Thanks for posting those, TMB! It's always interesting to note the differences between development versions of a game and its final version.

Yeah, I always find stuff like this to be awesome. It's also amazing how close to the final game the NES was able to go. I know a few NES titles used special graphic accelerator chips in the cartridge to have access to a larger palette, and Super Mario Bros 3 used a chip to pull off those large sprites. Nintendo was supposedly developing a 2.0 version of that chip for this, but the Mega Drive scared their asses into gear and got the SNES out in 1991 (1990 in Japan). As such, Super Mario World made the leap with it.

Those screenshots are very impressive for the NES. And the Raccoon leaf is my #1 favorite Mario powerup. I love it much more than the imitators to the throne (feather/cape, rabbit ears, winged hat, etc.). You can't beat the sense of control and style that the Coon style gives you!
