An Alternative that doesn't involve closing threads

Hi, I see you mods always closing threads because of one or a few nasty comments. I have a suggestion that I see on official sites. For example; The ESO site does not close threads immediately. Instead they give a warning and edit the offensive posts and [Snip] the nasty parts. However, if the thread continues to be toxic they will close it. They also close off-topic and Troll Bait threads. I think it would be best to only [Snip] the nasty comments and provide a reason why you deleted it. Instead of closing the entire thread just because of one comment. Just a suggestion.

The mods will often remove offensive comments, however sometimes it's easier to lock the thread until they have time to go through and clean it out. All of the mods have jobs and families; sometimes a thread lock is the easiest way of calming things down for a while as well.

Yeah, they already do all that stuff. They're just over-worked and sometimes locking things for a while is just easier.

Trust me... nobody's missing much by some of those threads getting locked.

Yeah, let the mods do what they will. If a thread of yours got locked because it strayed from the original topic, just ask a mod if you can remake it.

[I assume that's why you're saying this. People usually don't care too much about mod behaviour unless it affects them.]

Yep, mods will move some threads and offensive comments to the DU if they feel it's getting out of control, but sometimes locking threads is a good idea if people just can't learn to play nice.

Doing a simple edit doesn't take long especially when you have to view the comments anyway. The time excuse is laughable. Peeps who study to become doctors are still able to have fun and play games. You can get a lot done by proper time management. But I think Leo is right, we aren't missing much by closing the thread.

I just think it is very silly to close an entire thread due to one comment or a misunderstanding.

If it's one comment, than yeah we're just lazy sods...BUT....it's often PAGES of posts. I go to bed after my shift at work and wake up to a reported post, and I read the e-mail and it points to a post that's been further buried by pages of additional crap....so yeah it's not as EASY as you might think.

You know what's easy? Grown adults not acting like freakin' children.

I didn't say you are lazy. If it is pages then I understand why you close the thread. Oh and don't expect grown adults to not act like children especially when they love a child friendly show. You got to get used to dealing with undesirable behavior. I know I am trying.

I think Jester gets enough of kids at home and doesn't wanna deal with them here, too. He suffers enough whining and BS, all on account of the Stork forgetting to put her diaphragm in.

.........................I'm not sure I understand where kids come from.

Are you crazy? Don't argue with a moderator. I'm sure he's BEEN used to dealing with this kind of behaviour, but the fact of the matter is, the people acting that way are responsible for it. Just because moderators are there to clean up the mess doesn't mean anybody should be acting out.

I would imagine being a moderator here could become a full time job.

I'd moderate this forum if it was a full-time job. Hell, I'd moderate ANY forum if it was a full-time job as long as it paid even a little bit.

But alas, the moderators here work for free.

I think cabbages are involved somewhere along the line. I don't quite remember - when my parents gave me The Talk, my principle memories consist of my mother handing me me an anatomical pop-up book (which nearly put my eye out at one particular page) and my dad putting a condom over his head and blowing it up through his nose.

Good times.

Who said I was arguing with the moderator. I am allowed to say my own thoughts AKA opinions. None of it is aggressive. I am just sharing what I think.

13-year-olds are allowed to log into this forum, so... yeah. Also, Jester's been here for 10 years (as have I); he's used to it, trust me. Then you have to take into account that not all the assigned moderators are active here. When last I logged in, there were only three who kept things afloat.

This thread actually made me smile...

Condom balloons and ecto-cooler chugging storks aside, Jester is absolutely correct about the thread closing. I don't get on til late at night, and I end up with over 200 threads to check every single night. So closing a thread to get control of it works until we can go back and clean out all the bickering...

Jester definitely holds the fort well on his own, for the time that he's been a moderator. I'm very glad to have him on the team.

So be patient, things Are being taken care of... it's not instantaneous, but it'll be done right.
