Live-action Akira in works!

http://screenrant.com/christopher-no...y-warner-bros/

Chris Nolan to produce 3 part live-action adaptation of the classic manga which was turned into a cinematic animated masterpiece in 1988, i think Justin Lin should direct this one.

But yeah Nolan isn't the guy for the job. I really don't care if an american is directing it.

Eh I just don't like the idea of a non-Japanese take on it. Although a Japanese live-action version of it wouldn't really interest me much either. I'll just stick to the anime movie and the manga.

This thing has been in limbo like forever. At one point, I believe Leo di Caprio was going to direct. Not sure if he's still attached to it, but my other half is a big Akira fan, and was excited when he heard about it a couple of years ago.

Edit: Di Caprio might have been writing it.

Why when the animation is already great. And I ask the same for Ghost in the Shell. What is a live action movie gonna add to the franchise?

It'll make money and CB actually works live action in my opinion.

Most animu wouldn't work as a live action movie, but Cowboy Bebop seems like the best choice

If the live-action adaptations are by American studios and not Japanese ones, then I don't think it will help, since people who watch the movies are unlikely to check out the anime. Who will profit the most from this will be the American studios that adapt it, I'd say.

Cowboy Bebop already had a great animated movie, Knocking On Heaven's Door. It doesn't need a live-action movie as far as I'm concerned.

Personally, I'd like to see an American live-action Vampire Hunter D.

I'd be more interested to know if it's a Americanized adaptation (will it be renamed Johnny?) or if it's doing The Grudge route, still set in Japan but every major character is white

Therefore it won't be Akira, but just something using its license, pretty much. What's the interest of watching an Akira movie where the characters are played by non-Japanese characters and speak English instead of Japanese?

Because the story of Akira isn't a story of race or nation? It has pretty clear messages about certain aspects of Japanese culture in general, but that has little to do with its core themes, which revolve more around societal pressures and government corruption, which could apply to all society in general. It could literally take place in ANY major city in the world and it would make zero difference.

I'm not saying this is an excellent idea, it isn't for a number of reasons, but it not being Japanese enough certainly isn't one of them.

Yeah, probably. Now the anime One Piece movies could be fantastic. Never seen any, though,

Peanut, it is set in Neo-Tokyo, an alternate future version of the Japanese capital. Clearly the characters are also Japanese due to having Japanese names. And the title is also a Japanese name. So it kinda is the fictitious history of japan's capital in an alternate future. I get your point that it could be about any nation or society due to the core themes of the franchise. But if this ends up being set in, I dunno, Neo-New York City with non-Japanese characters, it will just feel different. Not like Akira. If there's gonna be a live-action Akira movie someday, then I think it's better to let the Japanese handle it. Might as well just create your own story while being influenced by Akira, but whatever. Maybe the studio decided this would be more profitable.

Anyway, let's see if this American production(if it takes off, that is) ends up casting a bunch of Asian actors or not. Either way, 'Ill stick to the animated movie and the manga, either way. I also want to make clear I was speaking for myself only. I suppose people who don't like, know much or care about anime(most people, since it's a niche market) would be interested in a movie like this and that's fine since people can decide to watch or not whatever they want.
