RIP Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy, dead at 91

While I never looked at Playboy as the internet made it obsolete, I must thank him as a man for what he did for my forefathers and the American people. All men everywhere are in his debt.

God bless him.

Weird, I was just thinking about the possibility of this last night.

Godspeed, Hef. We owe you big time.

That was uncalled for. Whatever you may think of his company and legacy, he seems to have been a decent human being, and was much loved by many. Playboy was also far more than just a smut mag. It had interviews, social and cultural articles, short stories and much more as well. Have some respect for the man please.

I was talking about Hefner's passing with a co-worker today who's old enough to remember the Playboy brand when it was in its prime, and he said, "There's no way he went to a better place."

I guess the Playboy mansion would be like heaven for some people.

Your co-workers is one of thousands who presented that meme as their original thought today. It's an amusing quip, but not after seeing it 100 times from 100 different people who are otherwise without a clever hair on their head.

Hef was a complicated man. On the one hand he was a philanthropist and counter-culture icon who helped to fund the Civil Rights movement.

On the other he was a shut-in who made a name for himself by objectifying those he professed to liberate.

Whether or not he left the world a better place than how he found it really depends on who you talk to.

But one thing's for sure, he certainly made things interesting.

One thing for sure, his magazine helped many kids get through puberty.

And naked ladies aside, the mags were tame and classy. I mean, it was just women in sexy and provocative poses. There was no sex involved, no toys, no actual porn other than nudity. I know some people that have never read a Playboy assume it's literally hardcore sex when no, it's really not.

Yeah, I've... read a few Playboy issues and it's just naked women. But it's not done in poor taste. Also, only like 10 pages at best have naked women. the rest has articles about everything from poverty in Africa to sports headlines, interviews with celebrities, letters sent by people, a sex/relationship column advice, etc.

Anyway, do people even still buy magazines such as Playboy, Maxim and FHM? A quick google search of a famous woman with nudes will take you to her nudes without much trouble.

Fair enough, I guess... I suppose it's hardly the worst out there. Though I've been biting my tongue over this one, esp how it was started...

Not really the liberator he claimed to be though, so don't really care that he passed. Besides, hard to feel too bad for someone if they made it to the 90s.

I honestly neevr knew much about Hefner. Clearly he was one of those old men who prefer way younger women. Dunno what the point of a man in his 80s marrying a woman in her 20s tbh. Can an 80 year old man even achieve an erection by that point? So what benefits does it give him marrying a woman in her 20s? He'll settle for eye candy? If he just wants company then might as well marry a woman around his age, but meh wtv

Playboy is now online only AFAIK. As for finding nude photos online- where do you think most of those nude photos of celebs COME FROM?!

Everyone from Latoya Jackson to Jeri Ryan to Marilyn Monroe has been in Playboy. (And I have personally seen the snake Latoya posed with in her shoot- he was a ball python named Excalibur from a pet shop in my home town of Lewisville!) Plenty of big-name stars did shoots for Playboy, and still do. And yes most of those photos end up online.

Edit: as a side note, the reason I know where the snake came from is that the owners had a signed and framed copy of the original photo above his enclosure for years. The shop is no longer there but Excalibur was over 30 years old the last time I saw him. He was quite big even when we first moved there when I was three, and by the time I moved from there to live with my grandmother at 22, he was over 20 ft long. He also apparently has been movies as well- such as the original Conan. And apparently sired quite a few progeny too!

Wow, what a shock. For some reason I thought he'd live forever

Sad, there goes another legend. How many legends have passed away over these few years?

You must not go around the Internet much if you think Playboy was trash...

Playboy is trash. So is the part of the internet you are referring to. Porn in all forms is trash. I hope Hef repented but I'm not holding my breath.

Suppose its good he had his virgins while he could, I hear there aren't any where he's at now.

You can think whatever you want; I'm not going to condemn his accomplishments or say there was anything harmful or malicious about them, it was all for entertainment purposes, as is every other entertaining type of media from stories/theater/film/whatever, as for anyone who takes it too personally, that's their problem, & it's all in their head.
