Spin off ideas for the 2012 series

The 2012 series is over and done with and new imagining of the series is around the corner.

But the 2012 series did have some concepts that would have been better if they were explored more. Maybe not as part of the series proper, but more as spin off stories that followed the series.

We can all more or less agree the series as we knew is ends at the conclusion of season 4. The Kavaxas arc serves as a mildly entertaining epilogue and also as an opertunity for the Turtles to say a proper good-bye to Splinter. While Lone Rat and Cubs is a sweet bit of back story within the Turtles lives.

A spin off story using Lone Rat and Cubs could be called ďNinja Turtles-Hamato Family JournalĒ the story would take place sometime after season 4 (There will be some hints the Kavaxas arc has taken place, but season 5 in entirety could just be seen as non-canon as well). The Turtles had up until that point just had Splinterís room closed off because none of them really had the heart to clean it out.

But now they have had the chance to really say their good byes to Splinter and know in their hearts that he is at peace and reunited with Tang Shen, the Turtles, April, Casey, and Karai are all clearing out Splinterís belongings as a means of letting him go. One of them...lets say Casey comes across a box that has several leather bound books. He flips through one of them but doesnít find it interesting that and itís written in hiragana so he couldnít read it even if he wanted to. So he sets the boxes aside. April however picks up the one of these books and recognizes them to be written in Splinterís hand writing. She points this out, the Turtles donít recall ever seeing these books in Splinterís possession.

Donnie reads through the first of one of the books before he suddenly gasps and points out the passage to Leo.

Leo informs everything that these books are actually a journal that Splinter had written about their lives. Mikey immediately suggests that Karai could read them and learn about the Splinter they knew.

Raph awkwardly comments that heís sure Karai has better things to do then read about their childhoods. Karai picks up on this and asks if heís afraid sheíll end reading something embarrassing. Casey laughs and jokingly suggests potty training as an example.

April however suggests they do more then that. She then proposes that the journals be translated English and the Turtles could also add in their own past memories as well as more current adventures and create a journal about their existence.

Leo is somewhat unsure and even points out a gallows humor statement. (Something along the lines of Ďthey were born in a void and when they eventually pass on it would leave little impactí ) April however says that their existence doesnít matter to the rest of the world, they still are important in the scheme of things such as defeating the Kraang, saving the world from forces that could destroy it, defeating the Shredder. So even if Casey, Karai, and herself are the only humans who would ever know them. There still should be something to prove they existed.

There's certainly room for extra tales but Nick has moved on, maybe when they are done making money on the new show who knows. Course, I have expressed my interest to them (why not? ) but I don't feel it's something they will care to do. (least not soon if at all) Depends how successful the new show is.

Edit: Not trying to dampen the thread btw, as I said there's room for it and this is a discussion site

Well, yeah it's kind of pointless to talk about theoretical spin-offs to a show that's over, especially when it has very low chances of being continued in the future. But eh, what the hell? Why not do it anyway?

I had this idea rattling in my about a special that would constitute a new ending. The apocalypse is just revealed to be yet another mind trick and a more sensical conclusion takes place, one that actually resolves the main storyline without skipping ahead a century.

Would Half Shell Heroes count as a spin off?

I don't know, it's more like a non-canon special, maybe? The continuity doesn't align with the show, there was no real conclusion and they never made a second one. It's kinda like the tie-in comics, think of it as a side-story rather than a spin-off.

If there were a spin-off of the Nick TMNT series, the two things I would've liked to see are, a Mighty Mutanimals series, and a Usagi Yojimbo series.

I'd prefer specials or a TV movie with the turtles but if there were to be a Spin off I would like it to include Karai.

I just want a few follow-up movies. Perfect plot involving Fugitoid/Renet and time travel, and we can have stuff like seeing Tiger Claw work alongside the Turtles with Karai.

More like an alternate reality, set in the same universe. A Spin-off is more of a by product continuity stemming from a greater story and considered cannonical to the story offered. For example Law and Order has various versions of itself such as Special Victims Unit or Criminal Intent. And while each series functions indepenantly of each other, the other stories are spin-offs because they are splintered of the original Law and Order searies. Because of this some characters from one version are transferred to another version. And occasionally one version would cross over with another version.

Half-shelled Heroes on the other hand while it did have the same cast and characters from the 2012 show. The way it was presented and how it wasn’t depicted as being canonical to the story it stemmed from that made it an alternate reality.

As for some of the other responses. Yes, Nick has moved on from Ciro’s version of the TMNT. There was good, lots of bad, lots of mediocre, more that felt that it could have been expanded upon. With this version while a Spin-off is not completely out of the rhelm of possiblity, realisticly there is no actual likelyhood for one. Maybe a made for TV movie if we are lucky, but that is still a very big if.

But if a spin-off could be created these are just ideas for some concepts that would work.

Such as for example, we had that moment where Joan Grody finds the Turtles and manages to get some footage of them. Then the whole issue is wrapped up with Muckman telling her that the Turtles are just a group of kids playing dress up. The whole thing felt like it was being set up for something, and in the end they did nothing with it.

The only reason Grody was accepting Muckman as a hero was because there was already a group of humans who saw him as a hero. And until there was something she could use to say otherwise, that was the direction she was forced to go. The Turtles on the other hand were blank slates so it was easier to talk trash about them because ‘ratings’.

So lets say there was a spin off called ‘Ninja Turtles-Public Enemy #1”

This could be set some time after Splinter has died. The Turtles are living their life’s the way Splinter had taught them when a new threat to the city suddenly arises. The Turtles face this threat head on, however, through no fault of their own the event catches the attention of Joan Grody. Grody at first is just getting footage of the being they are fighting. Later while going over it she sees footage of Mikey tucking into his shell briefly, she also notes how the Turtles move far too easily for people in costumes. And even if they were costumes they looked far too detailed for just a bunch of kids playing vigilante, which meant that these were not normal humans.

Later the Turtles are watching TV when Grody to the Max comes on and she announces that it turns out the Turtles are not just a bunch of kids running around in costume. And shows the footage of the Turtles fighting the threat to the city before airing the sound bite of Muckman saying they were just a bunch of kids in costumes. Grody then states if Muckman can openly lie on live tv, how can this city trust that he’s truely the hero everyone claims?

Days afterwards the Turtles are on patrol. Raph tells Leo they should have just stayed home and waited for all this to die down, but Leo says they protect this city and threats are not going to just wait until things die down. Suddenly a man yells “Look there, it’s the Turtles” this causes a commotion forcing the Turtles to return to the safety of the sewers.

Not long afterwards General Gryphon is being interviewed by Grody and says he has started an Anti-mutant Task Force called HARM (Humanity Against Revolting Mutants) and goes on to say that all Mutants are a threat to the city. The Turtles in particular are hostel and its because of them that much of mutations and alien invasions have occurred because of this they should be seen as Public Enemy #1. Much of the city believes this and sides with HARM or has Pro-Human sentiments such as Kirby.

There are also another group HOPE (Humans Open to Peaceful Endevors) while they appear to look as though they are sticking up for Mutant kind and pointing out their is no solid proof the Turtles are anything like Grody says. There are still elements of the group that aren’t as Mutant Friendly as they appear.

And of course the Pro-Mutant groups HAVOC which doesn’t need any explanation.

Not really a spin off but I kinda want to see an episode of Yoshi, Tang Shen, and Sakai on a random mission. Something like this episode of Red Vs Blue but more PG or Y7 rated

Half Shell Heroes

I've said before. Half Shell Heroes wasn't the best, but it ended way too interesting to just leave it that way.

I'd love a spin-off comic about Kurtzman. What he was doing before he met the turtles and in between their interactions, and during the Kraang invasion. This guy's got a really interesting story and we only ever get glimpses of it during the show proper. I doubt anyone would make this, however.

He seems like the guy who would tell us what the hell happened with the Kraang hivemind, when we only got the vaguest of a backstory.

Because the universe is the series as it is presented. The OT is itís own universe, the 2k3 is its own universe, and 2012 is itís own universe. Half-Shelled Heroes while using a different animation style uses the 2012 universe model (Same voice cast, same character designs, same villain roster), but isnít connected in any shape or form to the series itís modeled after thus making it an alternate reality.
