I remember 2 years ago, All 3 TMNT movies were shown on the UK national TV over a period of a few weeks.
The "Daily Mail" Newspaper had someone to give movies over the next week with ratings out of 5 and a brief and mostly opinionated paragraph about it.
Well, get this, when all 3 TMNT movies were on, the same person gave ALL THREE a 2/5 rating!!! That's saying that all 3 are of similar quality and are quite bad movies. Yeah, and they could'nt help but give a little go at them by saying it's hard to believe they became that popular in the early 90s!
I think it's outrageous to say that the 1st movie is no better or no worser than the 3rd movie which is absolute driffle!!! There's a big gap in quality in those 2!
This just shows the discrimination the turtle's get from the mainstream! It's probably someone who hated them when they were first popular. That's why the first TMNT Movie to me, is one of the most under-rated movies of all time!!!
And what would you give out of 5 stars to the 3 movies instead?

"Worser"??
I think there may be some discrimination from "the mainstream", as you put it, due mainly to the nature of the TMNT (we are talking about comic/cartoon characters here). Of course, I would say you are greatly over-exaggerating it.
I would give the first TMNT movie 3 stars out of 5. Maybe 4.

I'm sorry, but the 2 stars doesn't do any justice for the the first 2 films. :(
You're completely right about what the 1st film should get, a 3 or 4. Well, when i did do a review on the first one, i gave it 4 stars out of 5. However, i'll analyse my new DVD version to check i got it correct. No way should it be given 2 stars, that's like below-average.
In my books the first film just scraped a 4, and it's still a very good representative of how the TMNT should be portayed. :)
The 2nd Movie is a definite 3 out of stars. An average film, but a good one.
I would only agree that the third one deserves the 2 stars, it's a bad movie but NOT THAT bad!!
I really love the first movie. There are definitely weak spots, but all in all it's a good story and a fine movie. The second and third movies, less so. The reviewer's spot-on at giving the latter two movies 50% grades, but it does seem unfair to lump the first one in with them - watch TMNT and TMNT3 back to back and try telling me they're of the same quality. Not a chance.
Thing is, a lot of people dismiss the TMNT as pure kids' stuff. They see wacky video games and goofy cartoons and ridiculous toys (Caveman Leonardo, anyone?), and as a result won't take any of it seriously, even if the story warrants it.
Of course, we are biased, being fans. But I think if the mainstream public were to associate the movie with, say, the Mirage comics instead of the old cartoon, they'd have a very different perspective.

critics are idiots...never listen to them...many of them still think the TMNT evolved from a video game....

Being confused with Battletoads No Doubt.
But I agree with Buslady, never trust a critic.
I'd easily give TMNT 1 a 5 out of 5. I know several non TMNT fans that LOVE that movie.

Well... considering that the critics were all old farts (and they look like nerds to me) they dismissed TMNT much like parents as a "kiddy fad." Now, we TMNT-heads have read the comics, and we are seasoned turtle-oids... we know what qualities to look for.
I found the first film to be the best film of the series and the best comic book adaption into a film... Spiderman and the first 2 Batman films tied in second. Other than April being a newscaster, everything was to the LETTER of the comics. the second and third are give and take... but the first was brilliant, a stunning visual thrill, with a great script that kept the integrety of the characters.,...
did I mention critics are4 overpaid whiney losers?

Uhhhh.... no. Not at all.

I Agree that. that is untrue that the first movie is no better than the third. I LOVED THE 1st 100 times more than the 3rd. The first covered the basics, had great action and BATTLES and I loved the tatsu attacking the foot members in the locker room scene. The 3rd was PAINFUL to watch because of not much of new york, no shredder and less humor and bad costums.

Uhhhh.... no. Not at all.Yeah, the comic TMNT all have red-bandanas, there's more violence, more sci-fi and fantasy, Leo not Raph gets beaten crapless, and no surfer talk.
Still movie1 is a VERY good representation of the comic-book and has the same spirit. (Even Mike training extra hard at the farmhouse, though shown for just a split second)

Well, also, a lot of the events were different as well.
Casey and Raph's altercation ended differently, Splinter was never kidnapped by the Foot, Shredder was involved on the raid on April's apartment, the rooftop battle was chronologically the first thing in the comics (and it ended with the TMNT beating him rather succesfully), and so on.
I mean, I love the first movie and all, but it did not follow the comics to the letter in any sense.

Well... not to the letter literally.... but compared with the other 2 movies, and the original cartoon show... it was pretty much the same atmosphere and ideals... at least, of the first few issues, and then 10... and bits of what was left....

The fact is TMNT 1 is one of the better comic-inspired movies, and none of the inaccurate, pompous, too-big-for-their-boots critics can take that away.

What's strange about this is that movie reviewing websites like Epinions where the public can make their own reviews is that the average score for TMNT 1 is 4 out of 5 or something, same as the BBC movies section.
There is an element of intentional biasness amongst some critics.
