View Full Version : Would you have liked Image if TMNT hadn't been disfigured?

I asked a similar question about the Next Mutation...

Many people claim to dislike the Image series because of the TMNT's injuries. They personally didn't bother me. I loved the Image TMNT because I thought it had great characterisation and realistic dialogue. What about everyone else? Had the TMNT not been injured, what would you have thought?

1. The writing was horrible, barring the Rapahael as Shredder story-arc

2. Dontatello as a Cyborg was pitiful, and was just there so fans would talk, when all they did was YAWN

the writting was fine...minus the stupid mobster crap I hate that sh1t..I quite enjoyed the inclusion of image characters....
I also don't find it pitifull that don was a cyborg and it seems to me that it didn't make them yawn at the time it pissed everyone off and it still seems to be having the same affect after all these years..
but I will say one thing even if this person says there now you know who..they sure as hell act like you know who.

While I like how Mr. Laird isn't including the Image universe in to the new stuff, I actually liked the Image comics. They had all of the classic TMNT characters like the Triceratons (invading Earth, by the way...like the next Season...hmm...isn't that interesting), Leatherhead, Ultroms, Casey, Splinter, April, and a whole lot of them. I just hated all of those stupid characters cross overs with Savage Dragon. I think that is such a lame character.

I think I would have liked it a little better if Leo, Don, and Raph were still in tact. The Cyborg thing got to be a little overkill after a while.

Some of the villian ideas were kinda cool. I kinda like the idea of a rabid half-bat Splinter, but I'm not quite sure why. (Maybe I like demons? I dunno.) The astral plane stuff was all right too, but it was getting a little too close to NM for comfort.

I never had much problems with the Image series, except for Cyborg Don, so yeah, it would have been better for me but....

MC = Jarrah White no?

Look at the topics he starts, even one about Jarrah's banning, when he only had posted 3 or 4 times....suspicious

edit: hadn't read the topics in general through, sorry for this comment to MC (still suspicious though  )

Hi Bufo. No, I am not Jarrah White! Go to the "General TMNT Discussion" forms and check the "Would you have liked Next Mutation if Venus hadn't been?" thread. It is discussed over there.

The reason I ask why Jarrah was banned is because I have been reading these threads for months, but never registered. I would usually only go on-line once a week or so. Now that I have broadband I am on-line 24/7, and so decided to register. I was always amused by the fights between Jarrah and Zaurius Two, and Jarrah's obsession with Venus and the Next Mutation, (not to mention any other turtle characters). I sort of miss the guy...he gave me a laugh.

what did he do to get banned anyway? hopefully not for his love for Venus. Hated or not, Venus is still a character. I'd hate to see anyone banned cause they liked Cyborg Don.

I've said it before, but I won't get into depth about it again. Basically put, I really enjoyed the Image run, disfigurations and all. I would've liked for Image to have at least gotten a chance to end up its loose ends.

I didn't like every angle of the image series, But I didn't despise it eighter. It was an enjoyable enough read and filled the gap left while there were no Ninja Turtles projects going on....I don't count Next Mutation, That was a good concept ruined quite thouroghly. And the Image books did tell good stories, even if I would have liked the out come of events more if done differently. It was cool seeing their interpertaion of how the TMNT would handle certain events. It was just there take on things, after all. I would have like to see somethings tied up a little nicer, But hey! hat's the way it goes in the comics bizz.

Splinter turned into a vampire bat and the TMNT were forced to kill him, right?

Personally, I prefer his death from the heart attack in volume 4. Seemed more..."realistic", and a much easier way to go for the character. No melodrama.

I don't know if he exactly died. He did show up later, stating that Raphael's little Astral-Planage Sai-in-the-back somehow 'healed' him. It was weird.

He didn't die. Raph's healer friend in the foot cured him, I think. After that he went back to being the splinter we know and love.

Yeah, but Raph regressed into a prehistoric-like version of a turtle. How can you get a bat from a rat besides changing the first letter?

batraph
07-22-2004, 06:24 PM
Maybe it was a progression? I've always associated rats and bats together ever since i saw one of the batman movies and a comment was made about a flying rat, or something like that.

KROW

Mmmkay...
So you're guessing that a rat can evolve into a bat?

Interesting.

Actually, the Vampire Raph thing kinda makes me nuts. It almost reminds me of something like a really bad Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode. I mean, I guess it's one thing to be mutated, but turned into a vampire? Just kinda weird for me . . .

Well, Raph turning into a vampire is reversible. We all know he'll turn back to normal when the story arc ends. I doubt Lair would keep him that way forever. His return to normalcy is a given.

Now, Raph gettng half his face melted off isn't quite the same. Nor is Leo getting his hand bit off or Don turning himself into Robocop. Those are cosmetic changes that can't neccesarily be "cured".

Which, of course, is the *big* reason most people hate the Image book.. they haven't read it.

Splinter became a bat because after he was injected with a synthetic mutagen created by Warlord Komodo, he fled to a cave filled with *vampire Bats!* The synthetic mutagen Komodo cooked up worked like the cartoon mutagen. Whatever animal you are around when you are infected, you become.

As for the mutilations, there was a planned story arc for the future where the instability of the ooze that made the turtles would come into play. Like Leatherhead, who's savage impulses were taking over when he disappeared with the Triceratons, the changes would have carried over to the turtles as well. It's largely speculated that at this time, some cure would have been found that also healed their wounds, and brought back the regular foursome.

The story of Image's comic was, simply, the story of growing up. Each turtle got a unique look, and took a unique journey that *made* them seperate characters, and not just four turtles with different weapons. It's a feat even Laird has not achieved in his new book without resorting to the same tactics. Leo's gone off to help the foot clan, like Raph did in Image. Raph's gotten mutated and savage, which is just as bad as anything done in the Image series, Mike's still going for a romance, like he did in Image, and Don's playign scientist, which is his only character trait outside of Image.

If not for the mutilations, I think even Laird would have agreed the Image book was a viable and necessary moment in turtles continuity.

I didn't care much for the stories or the portrayals of the characters.. But the real nail in the coffin for me was the art.

These are comics for crying out loud...one mutation is just as likely as the other, and still within the realm of realism presented in the TMNT universe. Him turning into a bat may have been wierd, but not "out-there" for TMNT stories.

One thing I'd like to point out: Raph is NOT a vampire. Laird has confirmed this. They are currently unsure what Raph has been infected with. It appears to be some kind of "biological weapon". Perhaps created by the Xihad extremists.

I like the Image series as it is. Its awesome. Strange, yes, twisted, yes, and it has its flaws, but anyone who hates it is just lying to themselves.

It wasn't the injuries themselves that bothered me, but the lack of reaction to such severe changes. I know the Turtles are ninja, and are prepared for severe injury and death, but I would have liked to see a little more emotion. I know the TMNT have shrugged off injury before, but nothing like this. They seemed almost like cardboard cutouts of the characters. A little depth would have been nice.

But I did like several of the ideas. Raph taking over the Foot Clan was great, and so appropriate. Don's cyborg AI trying to take over his body was great, but it was way overdone by the end. Mikey as a writer was perfect. I liked Pimiko and wish they'd revealed who Lady Shredder was (although it's pretty obvious.)

But I always enjoy seeing different versions of the Turtles.

Mikey as a writer was perfect.

Yup.

Apparently, this was one aspect that Laird plans on carrying over, although he wasn't articulated it in the series yet. In a recent fan letter response, he did say that "Mike still writes".

*shrugs* We'll see, I guess.

I agree with a lot of what Kali said.

Raphael as the Shredder, that was stroke of genius. I wish that storyline had carried over into volume 4.

It did bother me that all the female characters looked like they just stepped off the set of Baywatch... I didn't like the character of Pimiko at first because she seemed like a pointless excuse for some eye candy, and that's not what I've come to expect from a turtles comic. However in the end I really liked the character and the costume did seem right for her... although the kuniochi with the identikit implants I could've done without.... :)

In the first few issues, the art was a bit sloppy and it was sometimes hard to see what was going on. I think it improved as the series went on though.

I was just going through some image comics and I noticed 2 things

This was the first comic I waited for monthly (and it was delayed like every issue) and it was the first tmnt comic I really got into. Of course this led me to pick up more archie issues and start mirage, but image TMNT might be what got me into comics. Mainly because it was being made at a time when TMNT was pretty much dead.

Second thing is that Erik Larson might possibly be one of the best cover artists ever. He manages to capture things from the story while capturing people's attentions. Not sure if you noticed but Marvel seems to not do covers anymore, it's either wolverine doing something or spider-man or whatever. Why do you think Savage Dragon has been around all this time?

Image TMNT was a great series, and from what I heard it was only going to get better with time, but sadly he couldn't balance both savage dragon and tmnt as well as being the president of Image. Erik Larsen definitely did a great job with what little time he probaby had, and he did it all himself.

My big problem with the Image series was just the completely pedestrian, boring nature of the book. It lost all of its quirkiness and became a run of the mill superhero book (witness the random, pointless Imageverse guest-stars, forgettable plots and erosion of any differences between the characters).

And I don't think it's the injuries so much that annoyed people as the fact that they seemed to occur one issue then written off as dealt with the next. None of the Turtles seem to give a crap about what's happened to them, it's done merely for the sake of being "edgy" ('cause God knows, random disfigurement is a completely novel idea within superhero comics).

I think that with the later issues things were rushed cause they knew that the series was going to be canceled pretty soon
