I liked The Next Mutation, though I admit it could have been better if someone other than Saban had made it. It really could have worked in my opinion.
My favorite part was the guys' costumes.

I saw several of the episodes when it was on FOX, and it was okay. I didn't like the idea of a female turtle (not that I'm sexist or anything), but it was just kind of like she popped up out of nowhere.
I didn't like their looks, either. Their bandanas were placed funny on their heads.
I also didn't like that new bad guy, the Dragon Lord, or whatever his name was. He reminded me too much of Dregg from the cartoon.
You do have to give the show credit, however. It really tried to establish itself, but it couldn't quite make it. Too many weird characters, for one thing. And Shredder from the very first episode looked absolutely atrocious. He didn't resemble anything close to any Shredder we've seen before, cartoon or movie or comic book.
However, I would have liked to have seen that Ninja Turtles-Power Rangers crossover. But I didn't watch the series enough to get that far.

Oh yeah.. the TNM... I liked tyhe concept of it when it was in production, but as soon as I saw what Saban's quality is like. Ilk... :P Like what Kali said, if someone with more creativity and passion directed that show, it would have been 75% more desireable.
Also liked the new designs for the shells, and the Hum-Vee... but they definately could have done without those funky full-face masks. :P

Despite how they portrayed Venus, and the corniness...
When I first saw it, I saw a lot of 'advantages' Fan fic wise: if there was one, why not more?
That's how I made up my concept of Maranda Ann Tezlof and the Mutant Militia...
*shrug* stupid, I do admit but... eh, it worked.
I think the mutant Militia concept could still work in a fan fic... if I can just get the plot right.
Was actually working on one (like, a few minutes a month >_<), about how Maranda's life story... from when she lived with her aunt and uncle for one year... (she was in first grade) to her agreeing to a 'military school' just to get away from them... I'll say no more, I might actually write this fic some day.
(if you'll notice, I'm one to write several fics about the tmnt, and almost none of them connected.)
I saw tons of fan fics possibilities in TNM as well. Mostly because I thought I could do a helluva lot better with the idea than they could. It also inspired me to write Midori.
If you read the TMNT Letters from the period that they used Venus as a character, it was a lot better than the show. The characters actually grew and changed etc., etc. Venus wasn't near as annoying in those. Although she tended to use exclaimation points WAY too often.

Mike was able to like... appear human, right? Or am I thinking of the wrong thing?
heretic888
10-16-2002, 09:27 AM
well, i was talking about the animated series in which they would all turn into hulk-like turtles.... but then the mutagen was balanced, so they got fixed up. but it was implied that this 'balancing' created some kinda 'super mutagen' and i woulda liked to see what happened with the turtles.
there was a fourth movie idea in which the turtles continued to mutate as well, and that is what you were talking about i believe. i got the impression that Mike just couldnt 'appear human' but that he had a range of psionic powers dealing with stealth and invisibility and illusion and stuff like that...
I wasn't to fond of the cartoon's "new mutations" in later eps either. Maybe it was just the way they dealt with it though. I don't remember much from those seasons.
Laird's planned "next mutations" for a fourth live action movie (way back a few years ago, see BFTP #36-40 (http://www.planetracers.com/blast/blastarchive.html)) were neat. Or at least most of them were. I liked Mike, Leo, and Don's. Raph's was okay, but they'd have to change Splinter's since they were so similar. I think Splinter should have been able to become invisible or blend into his surroundings.
Though I would hate to think of what Saban would have done with that idea. *shudders*

i thought the cartoon mutations were neat.... but i would have liked to see what would happen to the tmnt with the 'super mutagen' in thier bloodstream. i woulda been kool if the transformed into somethin like thos Supermutants seen in the action figures and Japanese anime.
as you may have noticed, the Raphael 'mutation' for the proposed fourth movie actually became the standard mutation for all four of them in the animated series (hulk-like, basically). i prefer the movie proposal's unique mutations however: Leo can create a metallic armor like Colossus, Raph can turn into a crazy hulk-turtle, Don has great telepathic powers and has augmented himself with cybernetic enhancements (due to his eyes failing(, and Mike has psionic powers dealing with illusionism and the sort. Splinter they should have worked on some more, however. All the turtles' mutations seemed to match their characters quite well.

i would lOVE to see the color scheme for Mike's new costume in the movie proposal. it could be either gay or totally cool. like if the shirt was white and the vest black that would look cool. and i wonder about the color of that bandana. is it like camouflauge or hippy or what?

why did they drop 'teenage mutant' from the name????
heretic888
10-16-2002, 04:28 PM
they did that for the next mutation to show that the turtles are more 'grown up' now....... but the ironic part is that tnm was the most childish and immature media of the tmnt ever created.
the full teenage mutant title is currently used on all the other tmnt media (comics, animated series, toys).... i personally think they should drop it from the comics considering the turtles are like 28 in them.

you see, teenage mutant ninja turtles is basically a coming of age story. of course, they shouldnt have them grow up all at once or anything, but keeping them the same age completey ruins the depth of the story.

well woopty doo it was just a suggestion pal
Well, I like the stories of when the Turtles are young, although I'm also enjoying the older Turtles in the new Mirage books (and in fan fics.)
Watching the Turtles grow up makes for a wonderful story, but I'm glad they can also "rewind" and make the Turtles young again in a new universe. And keep them that age as long as they want, maybe the mutagen slows their aging.
TNM action figures were actually of pretty high quality, especially compared to the earlier figures. I wish I could have gotten some.

I agree... :D I LOVE hearing about the guys when they were young...I would figure that the mutagen WOULD slow the aging process, thus allowin the turtles to be teenagers for a longer period of time, and Splinter to stay more active in battle, and not with one foot in the grave...

could someone explain to me exactly WHY the mutagen would slow the aging process. i mean, i know turtles have extraordinarily long lifespans but still......
i also think it is interesting to show the turtles at differnt points in their lives. the whole basis of the tmnt story is the coming of age of four brothers that are completely isolated from the rest of the world and coming to find their place in such a world..... showing them at different stages in life demonstrates this growth.

Well, do YOU know exactly what mutagen does to the body? Aside from the obvious changes, there's really no way to tell what else is effected by the mutagen. Are you looking for facts in a fictional universe? Good luck.
Again, with TNM, I still think the ideas were sound, but Saban butchered it. People have seen the scripts before they were filmed, and they said they were really good, until the directors got ahold of them. *kicks Saban*

well.... regarding the mutagen.. and im talkin mirage 'universe' here.. i was always under the impression that it acted as an 'evolutionary stimulant' and dramatically increased the evolutionary process within a creature by literally millions (maybe even billions) of years. thus, animals become human-like in both anatomy and intelligence.
i am not really sure how this affects the aging process of the mutant, but take in mind that normal turtles already have a bit longer lifespans than human beings (they can live well over 100 years without problems). i suppose it is logical to assume that a more 'evolved' lifeform would have an even longer lifespan... but then again, im no biology expert so i cant really be sure.

Yes, its true that turtles have longer lifespans than humans, but i think it has to do with thier reptilian build some how; mutating, (or evolving for that matter), however, into a Anthropomorphic being with the mental compacity of a human as well as the basic bipedal humanoid form may change this completely. It is my assumption that the average life of a Anthropomorphic Turtle would be a bit higher than that of a human's. Like, perhaps in the 90's or a tiny bit past 100; but, I doubt we'll ever really find out if the turtles will grow of old age...
heretic888
10-17-2002, 10:08 AM
i dunno....
in the archie books, for example, the turtles are alive exactly 100 years in the future and they have the physical age of approximately late 30's-early 40's (i think). i know we are talking about mirage characters here, but still......
who knows? the mutagenic evolution may increase or decrease their natural lifespan. but, i too am under the impression that either way they will slighly longer lifespans than humans. its just a matter of HOW MUCH longer......

*pulls out a pin and pops everyone's bubble*
Actually, he does want them to live a loooong life. Notice that Splinter is still around in his new comic (where the TMNT are 30 something's). Logically, I thought the grand master would be dead from old age by then. Or if you consider the fact the natural life span of a domestic rat is only 6-7 years. That's just a flash in the pan compared to a the life span of a box turtle.
So after reading the first comic book, I emailed Laird and asked him what he has in mind for the turtles ages. (And I wish I had saved that email!), Laird said he really didn't have anything worked out. So all our theories on the mutagen, on elongated lifespans, etc, are only theories. They hadn't really worked those details out... other than just making sure the whole family is still alive and kicking for their adoring fans. :P
Of ocurse, if someone wants to prod him again and she if he has considered any of these ideas as a possiblity, be my guest. (though, I also think the mutagen elongating their lifespans works for now).

Actually, I have wondered this for a long time. The Turtles were teenagers in 1984, when they were first introduced. They were teenagers in 1994. It's 2002, and *gasp* they're still teenagers?
This has always struck me as somewhat humorous. If the Turtles were, say, 15 years old in 1984, they would be 33 years old today. And yet we still refer to them as teenagers.
I guess some things never grow old. Literally.
Someone should invent a show called "Middle-Aged Mutant Ninja Turtles." That would seem more appropriate, given their "real" age . . .

It's kind of funny to me to think of the cartoon Turtles as teenagers because they certainly didn't act like teenagers. They seemed more in their mid-twenties to me.
I don't care who you are, no one can do the things Donatello has done in just their teens. That dude can create portals to other Dimensions and stuff. Many kids can't even get their homework done for their next day's underwater basket-weaving course.

The mutagenic process i referred to is from the mirage tmnt. the idea that the mutagen makes you 'turn' into the animal you last touched is really, really silly. as far out as an 'evolutionary stimulant' may be, the idea of an 'animal turner' is flat-out ridiculous.....

Another thing that really bothered me about the TNM was HOW they portrayed Venus. The fact they had a girl in the show wasn't my problem. They had other female roles in the other versions that come off rather well.
They way they stereotyped her drove me nuts. Thank goodness she wasn't wearing PINK too! Since I know many Asian students who speak english as a second langugae at college and in my in-law family, I know they did a horrible job for Venus. C'mon... just cause they can't speak english doesn't mean they are stoooopid. And also, they have mroe problems with the grammar and pronunciations (p's, b's, f's, r/l's, s/z/x's) than they do in trying to say American slang. Since they don't understand our idioms as much, they are less inclined to use them until they know for sure.

and i apologize to reznorite if what i said was seen as an insult. i obviously misintepreted you. :(
as for Venus, she was just a horrible mistake to begin with (as Mr. Laird has expressed on many occasions). set aside the female and asian sterotyping, and the ridiculous idea that the turtles arent really 'brothers' so that means she isnt really thier 'sister' (apparently some genius thought there would be actual romance in a Saban show)...... the whole idea of the 'shinobi' is ridiculous (and insulting to ninjutsu practitioners).
lemme explain. Shinobi is a Japanese word (NOT a Chinese one). It is, very simply, another pronounciation of the kanji character usually called 'nin'. nin is the character used in ninja, ninjutsu, and ninpo. IN OTHER WORDS, 'shinobi-jutsu' and 'nin-jutsu' ARE THE EXACT SAME WORD!!!! shinobi and a ninja are just two different words for the same thing. the idea that a 'ninja' is a Japanese warrior focusing on the physical aspects of the martial arts and a 'shinobi' is a Chinese shaman focusing on the so-called spiritual aspects of the martial arts is ludicrous...... :|
all in all, venus was just a really bad, really stupid character.

Yes.. that sooo confused me too! Why did she call herself shinobi if she grew up in a Chinese enviroment! I made the mistake once, when we were watching a Chinese flick like Crouching Tiger, and I asked my husbnad if they were like Shinobi. He got so mad, since he has this dislike for the Japanese martial law anyway. He said shinobi were nothing like these chinese warriors, etc. etc.
I also wasn't clear if Venus even came from China. How the heck did she get to NYC from there so easily!? Would make more sense if she grew up in CHina Town. Stupid plot indeed...

Actually, the ninja/shinobi have far more in common with Chinese martial arts than your husband probably wants to admit.
Ninjutsu is much more similar to Chinese internal martial arts (such as Tai Chi, Hsing-I, Pa Kua, and so on) than the conventional martial arts of the samurai (most bujutsu and jujutsu schools) and Okinawans (most karate).

I have read that both Kevin and Peter resisted the idea of Venus(Peter more than kevin)but it was Fox who called the shots... So either they would come up with female character or there wouldnt be any show...
Let's see... "broken English", gah, how do I explain that one. Like "We go to store now." as a statement. She had trouble with slang, not the language in general.
Plot holes, those silly little things I tried to patch up in my fics. Shinobi - to explain that term I said that Chinese mystic warriors (the Shinobi) mirgrated from China to Japan when they began being prosecuted, where they intergrated and eventually inspired the early creation of ninjutsu. Not sure how historically accurate that is, though.
As for how Venus got from China to New York in such short time. A boat would have taken days, if not weeks, depending on whether she took a boat all the way to New York, or got off on the West Coast and traveled by land. I doubt the Turtles would have waited that long before considering getting help for Splinter.
Yes, I figured that one out too, (at least in my mind,) taking a page for Xena.

"Shinobi - to explain that term I said that Chinese mystic warriors (the Shinobi) mirgrated from China to Japan when they began being prosecuted, where they intergrated and eventually inspired the early creation of ninjutsu. Not sure how historically accurate that is, though."
-----------
interesting idea, but the word shinobi itself IS a japanese word, NOT a chinese one. however, it is true that much of the ninja's martial arts came from warriors and mystics that fled China during the collapse of T'ang Dynasty (starting around 900 CE). and there are no Chinese traditions that kept those now-Japanese martial arts in tact.
Yes, I am well aware that Shinobi is a Japanese word. *shrugs* Perhaps it's merely a translation. Maybe their original name was lost somewhere in history.
Of course, there's always the chance that the Saban writers were merely horrible ignorant, but what are the odds of that? :P

I think Perhaps they were aiming it at little kids.....simple productions for simple minds....they didn't figure any older, smarted people were going to watch the show and figure the "Shinobi thingy" out.......but thats only my opinion.

Maybe they figured that all of the TMNT fans were all grown up and don't atch cartoons anymore (don't take offense please) so they made the turtles however they wished thinking no one would notice or remember the originals............Hey this is just a thought.

As i said before ir came from the fox head office. That was really stupid thing but removing her wouldnt have made the show any more watchable.
I see your point but I still would like to know where the 5th turtle came from.
She was created by Fox/Saban execs because they have this PC thing where there needs to be at least one female character on a hero team.
In the show's storyline, she was mutated by the same ooze the other Turtles and Splinter, except she was washed away and taken to China and raised by someone else.

Well, duh, she wouldn't have survived being washed all the way to China. She was washed away to China Town, then Chung I took her back to China. The caption at the beginning of East Meets West Part 1 says "Somewhere in China".

Well I think it's good that they wanted to put a female on the team.....personally I think we need more female heros, but they could have at least made her a bit more acceptable.
I know, they were trying to be PC with a female hero, but they ended up being very un PC with her characterization. Yep, that's Saban for you.
I always thought it would have been neater to have a female turtle, but have her be a bad guy. There woulda been some nice angst in that plot idea.

I like the comment where Venus should have been a villain, and she would not so retarted at tokka or beebop and rocksteady.
Yes, Venus should have been a villain. The Turtles would have been like, "There's a female Turtle! And she's trying to kill us! It's official, life hates us!" She's much more interesting as a villain.
Female characters like Ninjara and Mona Lisa were never as openly disliked as Venus. Most fans loved them. What, was it just because Venus was a turtle? Was it because Saban's portrayal of her was stupid? Was it because she was "forced" into the show?
And if she was so disliked by Peter and Mirage, why was she so completely brought into the TMNT continuum? And what was with just dropping her like that? Geez, you think the genius who thought up teenage mutant ninja turtles could come up with a good way to get rid of a character.
No, I'm not bitter. :|

Not necessarily. There's also the people who read the TMNT Letters, and those who read fan fics with Venus as a character.
Peter has said that if there ever is a "History of TMNT" book of sorts TNM and Venus would have to be included in that, if only in a small section.

There is only one thing that i love about next mutation. Very funny and stupid enemies. I have already told that dragonlord is the best to my mind. And mean Wick is very cool too. And that crazy hunter. Somebody told that he watched turtles in hebrew. Well,it is not so bad. Just imagine the turtles in russian :goofygri: .
I was shocked when i saw Shredder in the "The enemy of my enemy" episode. He was like a clown, like a weak old poor man. How come they described him in a such way. Dragonlord was going to defeat such a great ninja. That was a stupid idea. That's what i think.
I was disappointed with the episodes with vampires and the stolen heart. And kids-villians,that is a silly comedy, not a ninja show. What do you think?

I could not believe it when I saw what Shredder was portrayed like in that show. First of all, he didn't look ANYTHING like the various Shredders we know from the cartoon, movies, comics, etc. Second of all, he gets defeated in about 30 or so minutes, after years of never being defeated. It was almost like a slap in the face to the character. Why go to all that trouble in bringing him back, only to rub his face in the dirt?
The Dragon Lord thing was stupid. It reminded me too much of Dregg, and I wasn't too big a fan of him either.

eh... Shredder's name was demeaned the greatest in that show. and where were the vintage villains like Slash or Sarvanti Romero? wait, that was from the comics.
*shakes head* anyway, i loved the dragon lord idea and him being practically impenitrable, so that the turtles could really have a challenge. but the fact that the plot of the series wasn't even completed, yet it was cut off early (even though it was one of the most popular show on fox kids saturdays mornings) made me really upset.
i guess you never know how sorry a show is until you start missing it.

i told them to cancel it. j/k.
Shredder was pathetic in that show. Oddly, if you take his lines, they're good, they're just poorly acted, as is the whole dang thing. But I love over-the-top stupid shows so I can appriciate the comedy in this show.
As for his defeat. Think about it, he's a ninja warrior (*snickers*) who's been battling other warriors. (*snickers again*) And then he comes up against a mystic. That's comparable to being a math genius, then being asked all these literature questions. He just wasn't prepared.
I liked every idea in that show. Read: idea, not the way it was exucuted. I had a project where I was gonna rewrite the episodes but that fell through. I'm trying to keep it alive through fan fiction, though.

ninja are warrior-mystics, kali.
besides, a full-blown mystic would get murdered by a skilled martial artist. Why? because almost all of that 'magic' is esp or parlor tricks and without great physical training you would still get slaughtered. Knowing the enemy is about to throw a right hook is useless information if you havent been trained on how to dodge a right hook. Venus was clearly not even half the martial artist of any one of the four turtles, and the fact she defeated the 'great' Shredder with a 'shinobi spell' was just retarded. The Mirage Shredder would have been unaffected (due to the ninja's meditative training) and knock her out with one hit.
*ahem* Yourself. What Venus did was a true mind trick. A trick, but one that worked. It is possible to connect with your enemy's energy and subtly manipulate them psychologically the way she did. I've done it on a smaller scale before. I know, not very nice of me, but I never claimed to be an angel.
Shredder was being stupid and arrogant in that scene. She used his over-confidence against him. I'm not a warrior, but I am a mystic. The idea is to keep them from throwing the right hook, so to speak. Even if it ain't "real" it still works.
heretic888
10-23-2002, 10:58 AM
trust me, that wouldnt work against a guy with 30 years of ninjutsu experience. his mind is probably so disciplined its like a frikkin steel wall. the 'subtle influence' you speak of actually is included in ninja training. its not like she would be throwing at him anything he hasnt seen before.
besides, i can assure you that any one of these 'great psychics' would be in a world of trouble if they ever were confronted by a skilled fighter. only the most POWERFUL of minds can calm an angered human being just through subtle influence, and it just so happens that alost all of those most powerful of minds happen to be high-level martial artists. coincidence, huh?
*grits her teeth* Like trying to effect a steel wall, huh? Yeah, I know what THAT'S like.

The only good thing about the Next Mutation were the character designs, which I rather liked. Otherwise, it was a piece of crap that never deserves to be mentioned. As soon as I found out that the same men who brought us the Power Rangers, Saban, were behind it, I knew we were in trouble. I mean, look at their enemies, like a giant, talking gorilla! I can only belive so many things, and a talkig gorilla is way "out there". Don't even get me started on Venus. Who on god's green earth came up with her? I wish I knew, so I could punish him for this unforgiveable sin, soiling the TMNT's otherwise good name. Okay, I'd better stop now, before I break something.
:ohwell: I think some of you need a sense of humor. That, and an appriciation for corny- and campy-ness. People without a sense of humor have nothing but my pity.

I do appricate corniness and campiness. But not on the scale that the Next Mutation had it. I like it once in a while, where it's appropiate. All of the Next Mutation was corniness and campiness. I would have liked something different once in while. I love humor, but I also like some drama. When the two are mixed together well, it can be truly great. For the Next Mutation to have truly succeeded, they'd need more than just a half hour of comedy. Sure, I like action, but a characters thoughts and personal problems, I find, are just as intersesting.
Now, I'm not making much sense, am I? Well, all the same, I hope you'll understand I mean.

Don't take TNM seriously then. Don't be a fanatic about it. It's not a personal attack on you after all.
I never said TNM was perfect, or even good. I thought it was a god-awful parody but I laugh my butt off every time I watch it. Could've used more drama and better action, yes, I agree. Believe me, there's fiction out there by fans that make TNM look like Shakespeare. And there're stories that've turned the TNM universe into a pit of drama and decent plots.

And it was TMNT when we needed it most, so its wasn;'t high art, it was live action people TMNT isn't really a live action product, its best suited to being drawn. But given what they had it was a really good show. And it gave us some really cool toys, if nothing else, Raph and his bike kick the crap out of any other TMNT turtle/bike toy made.

ITMNT isn't really a live action product, its best suited to being drawn.
That is a good point. I think that the original comic format is the best for TMNT. No movie or cartoon show can ahcieve same level of storytelling. Also it isn't affected by censors. But First movie and the new cartoo prove that the concept can be transfered to screen with good results, but some deepness is lost in the procces.
